Today P2 and Erland had the chance to visit the Aith shop to put what they’ve been learning about money into practice. Miss Murray gave them all post-it notes with a price on it, and they had to match this to a price they found in the shop. Miss Murray took our toy money with them to practice finding the right amount too. They even had the chance to use real money when they bought sugar and bananas for the school! Well done guys!

Primary 1 – Months of the year
Primary 1&2 made a calendar
We are thinking about time this term and decided to make a calendar.
Primary 2 made the grid part of the calendar and had to think about the year, month names, days of the week and the number of days in each month. They worked really hard together to complete all 12 months for our calendar.
Primary 1 thought about months, seasons, weather and special events then designed a picture for each month.
We now have a calendar in the P1/2 and P2/3 classroom to look at and use.
Technology
We are learning about 2D shapes in Primary 1
Primary 1 learn about halves and quarters
We made and decorated paper cakes.
We each decided whether we were going to cut our cake into half or quarter.
We know that each half or quarter needs to be exactly the same size.
We folded the paper to find the middle.
When we cut 1 whole into half, we end up with 2 bits.
When we cut 1 whole into quarters, we end up with 4 bits.
Maths problem solving
Primary 2/3 have been working very hard to solve maths problems.
” We have been finding out different ways to make the number 14 and 16 using ladybirds” by Edyn
“We worked with a partner to see how many different ways we could make 24. Some examples are: 12+12=24, 20+4=24, 12×2=24. We found out lots and lots of different ways to make 24” by Carlene
“We had to use 2 numbers to find the largest even number, the largest odd number, the smallest odd number and the number closest to 50″ by Oliver
” Problem solving was fantastic, hard and good” 😄 By Edyn, Oliver and Carlene.
Early Years transition into Primary 1
Lerwick fishmarket and electronic auction by Finn and Shona
Primary 3,4,5 have been on trip to LHD fishmarket and electronic auction. We were interested in finding out why the sea/fishing industry is so important to Shetland as well as experiencing different types of jobs involved in running a business. We also used a lot of the information gathered in our ‘real life’ maths back in school.
Here is Shona and Finn’s account of the day..
We walked towards this massive building. We went up steep stairs and were in a corridor, we could see the live electronic fish auction happening inside.
There was a big clock that had a light that went round. There were two big rectangles. One was the fish that was about to be sold and the other was what was sold.
The live fish auction – each person in the room might be bidding for about 100-200 companies. The seafood industry is really important and it is the biggest industry in Shetland.
Martin was our guide. He told us that this is the second biggest fishmarket in the country.
Different species – how many can you name?
They are loads of fish. They are all graded into different sizes
Monkfish have very sharp looking teeth!
The temperature of this room is kept at 2 degrees. This room had all the fish sorted, boxed and labelled.
Ready for delivery
The Shetland Fisherman’s Association where Ruth told us all about So Much To Sea – and we got goodie bags!
Now it is time for us to try fish buying!
Who is going to get the best price?
As a buyer you have to watch the clock. It shows the price going down. Someone could go for the fish any time before you so you have to be ready to bid.
..Ready to press the blue button..
Andrew the auctioneer answering all our questions about the electronic auction, we had lots!
Best trip ever!
Primary Toy Sale
Primary 1 held their toy sale today to raise money to help pay for their trip to Up Helly Aa next Tuesday. We received donations of lovely toys, books and games and at 2.00pm there was a mad rush of buying and selling. Nearly everything was sold.
Primary 1 helped count the money and we were delighted to discover that we had raised about £115! This will help pay for the bus and possibly a snack for everybody.
Thank you to everyone who donated toys and to everyone who bought from the sale.
