P7’s go to Voxter!

For the John Muir award P7 went to Voxter for two days, with our teacher Mr Balfour and Miss Spall. When we got to Voxter we met a man called Rob who led the outdoor activities. We got ready to go up to Eshaness. We got our old clothes on and old shoes or boots.

When we got to Eshaness we went to the ‘Land of Rock’. Rob lead the way and we had to follow him. We could go through small tunnels and go over big rocks. There was a steep passageway we had to climb up. We followed him until we came to a cliff that was a different colour Ā than the rest. He told us that it was a different colour because the sea had recently knocked it down. We had a break to have our packed lunches and then we carried on until we got to the end. We looked over the edge at the end of the cliffs. The view was really cool! It was a really good trip.

By Bobby Moffat

We were on top of a high cliff with a 200ft drop, and we learned a safe way to be able to look over the edge. We had to lie down on our stomachs and carefully put Ā our heads over so we could see it. It was amazing! Rob showed us an amazing geo. It had a waterfall and a bridge made of rock. It was a once in lifetime activity!

by Flora Quinnell

Being up on the cliffs made me feel very lucky to be a part of Shetland. It was truly breathtaking to see the wonderful views that Shetland has to offer. As we left the cliffs, Rob asked us to think about how the wild made us feel inside, and what we’d thought of the first day. Personally, I thought the trip was amazing, to me each step felt like a new challenge to enjoy and conquer. I would say it just makes me feel ready for anything. I had a wonderful time.

By Aimee Irvine

Back at Voxter we made our own tea, mince and tatties. We cooked the mince, peeled the tatties, chopped the onions and peeled the carrots. The meal was spectacularly scrumptious!

by Nicol Smith

While we were having tea we played ‘Chinese Whispers’. It was really funny! Overall I really enjoyed this trip.

by Matthew Marshall Lewis

After tea we played lots of games including a Scavenger hunt and a relay game. Me, Flora and Aimee won them all. Then we made hot chocolate and toast for supper.

by Sinead Wood

On Tuesday we went canoeing but before that we had to face a much bigger challenge, putting on the wet suits! The wet suits were very tight and hot, then we went to Crogaholm near Muckle Roe and Rob showed us how to make a secure raft with 2 canoes.

by Scott McKearney

After the rowing some of us jumped into the water and everyone was soaking wet and water was all over the floor of the bus. I enjoyed the entire trip besides getting on the wet suits!

Film Premiere

In term three we practiced and performed a play for the drama festival. Izzy was our wonderful director. She was very proud of our performance, and so she decided to create a movie premiere for all the classes that participated in the Aith school. In the primary three and four class they preformed a play called Rumpelstiltskin, and in the primary five, six and seven class we preformed a play calledĀ The Stubborn Little Girl and the Spider’s Web. When Izzy came into our class and told us about the premiere we got very excited. We got interviewed by Izzy, Bailey, Barnum, and Amber came to interview us about the play. Ā The premiere was on the 28-05-15 and it was a big success. We all invited someone to come with us to the premiere and watch the films. Everybody was beautifully dressed, and everyone really enjoyed themselves. There was a celebrity visit and VIPs. We got our photos taken by the paparazzi. Over a hundred people came to our school. We had mocktails and a finger buffet for everyone.Ā It wasĀ a lot of fun! by Flora Quinnell and Aimee Irvine P7

Christian Aid visit

Mary Mulligan came into talk about what Christian Aid does . First she talked about the different problems that Christian Aid was trying to help with.Ā We watched two videos one was about a young girl who had to clean and cook in the house but the good thing was she got to go to school . The second video was about how a cow can make a difference . We had a meeting that was about a village in Africa . How the meeting went was all the boys got a sticker then we had a vote on various situations but only the boys had their say . We really enjoyed the visit and our class are trying to find ways to help and raise money for Christian Aid . Drama Festival Rehearsals

IMG_0887 IMG_0919 IMG_0916 IMG_0915 IMG_0906 IMG_0895

On Thursday 5th of March primaries 3,4,5,6 and 7 went to the Garrison Theatre to have a dress rehearsal for Rumpelstiltskin the P3,4 play and our play The Stubborn Little Girl and the Spider’s Web. When we were backstage we were all a bit nervous. The stage was really big, there was a lot more space than we were used to. Backstage in the wings were a little bit cramped as we waited for our cues. Rob the technician was in charge and if we were noisy he said, “Quiet in the wings please!” Thomas was in charge of the lights and sounds and Izzy and Marsali were helping us get into position on the stage. In the dressing rooms it got very hot because the little bulbs on the wall got hot and heated the room up. We watched the primary 3 and 4 class doing their play Rumpelstiltskin and it was very good, they Ā thought our performance was very good too. Watching each other gave us tips for our shows next week. Ā The P3,4s will be the first play of the Drama Festival on Monday night and P5,6,7 will be on the final night on Thursday. Ā We all enjoyed our trip out and can’t wait to doĀ our performance next week in the Shetland County Drama Festival.

Aith walk

For the social studies project we are doing with Mrs Mouat, we went for Ā walk around Aith to find out information. We had to find out places to work, relax and interesting places to visit. We visited Michael’s Wood and the lifeboat station and some people asked Ray and Betty Ferrie and Hylton Henry questions. In our pairs we had to make a presentations with the photos and information when we got back. We really enjoyed the trip out. Ā By Sophie Bain

Visit to Total Green Awards

On the 21st of January primary 6 were invited to Mareel to see the Total Green Awards. When we got there we were given stickers saying our school name and biscuits and juice. We watched some science tricks while we had those. One was an optical illusion. Val spun a magic wheel and we had to stare at it for 20 seconds then straight at a small rabbit. The rabbit instantly grew! When we spun the wheel the other way the rabbit got smaller. We saw a balloon trick too. In the auditorium we watched an animation made by Ollaberry who won last year. It was called ‘A Turtle’s Tale of a Plastic Bag’. It was about litter in the sea and it was very good! We can’t wait to take part in this competition. By Holly, Joann and Sophie.

Commonwealth Games Legacy

As part of the Commonwealth Games Legacy programme our school was paired with Brunei Darussalam and Jersey. Our pupils Peter, Holly, Yelena and Ishbel designed Fair Isle ganseys for four Shetland ponies, which we sent out to our partner countries. The boxes sent contained photos of our favourite sports, places, information about our school and also local events such as Up Helly Aa. Our cuddly mascots have now returned from their travels and brought with them a huge box of marvellous items from these countries. Have a look!
