Hockey Festival 2017

25 pupils from P6 & 7 had a great day in Brae at the annual Hockey Festival yesterday.  Active Schools organise a superb event where pupils can develop their hockey skills and also get a chance to mix with pupils from many other settings.

Sunshine, laughter, determination, resilience, sportsmanship – well done to all involved, and thanks to Mrs Spence and Miss Murray for accompanying us.

Aith JHS Day of Action – a snapshot of progress

You can actually make anything out of anything as long as you try hard and are positive” Liam P4.

I think he perfectly sums up our busy day. Massive thanks to the RSPB, our hardworking volunteers, Early Years, Primary and Secondary pupils who all worked together to improve the outdoor environment around the school – what a difference a day makes!

Primary 3 being teachers!

Today, primary 2 were learning about division for the first time. After spending some time discussing it as a class, every P2 paired up with two P3s who showed them how to do division using cubes. The P3s were fantastic at explaining and helping their classmates figure out the workbook page too. I’m very proud of how well everyone managed to listen to each other. It’s great to have experts in the class when you’re learning a new skill, P2 are very lucky!

Pick’n’Mix

We have been experimenting with a new way of doing homework where the pupils have more choice in deciding which homework tasks would be most beneficial to them.  Some of the options are best done little but often whilst other tasks take a bit longer so you might just choose one of this type to do during the week to fit around the other clubs and activities you enjoy doing.  Here is a sample of some of our ‘weekly treat’ tasks the pupils have chosen so far, I am very impressed with the time and effort they have put  into these tasks. Well done P4/5/6!

We have seen some ‘Brilliant Baking’, Terrific ‘Travel Bug’ journey planning, Smashing Roman shields, Magnificent Maths posters, Fantastic play-scripts and a Roman letter translated into Latin – wowzers!

The smuck experiment

Have you ever wanted to wear slippers (smucks as we say in Shetland dialect) to school?
Have you ever wanted to wear slippers (smucks as we say in Shetland dialect) to school? Following a report on Newsround which claimed Primary schools that allow pupils to wear slippers -or smucks- in class get better grades, Primary 4/5 decided to put the theory to the test.  We will be interested in the results of their experiment – with already the number of pupils keen to participate increasing!

Primary 1&2 made a calendar

We are thinking about time this term and decided to make a calendar.

Primary 2 made the grid part of the calendar and had to think about the year, month names, days of the week and the number of days in each month.  They worked really hard together to complete all 12 months for our calendar.

Primary 1 thought about months, seasons, weather and special events then designed a picture for each month.

We now have a calendar in the P1/2 and P2/3 classroom to look at and use.

Primary 6/7 gymnastic routine

We had 3 weeks to try and make a gymnastics routine with a partner or small group. There had to be a minimum of four moves and a maximum of eight. We had to include a teddy bear roll in our sequence. We suggested music to put our sequence too. We had a vote to see what song we should do our routine to. Lisa Johnsons ‘tears’ won. We did our sequence to that but it didn’t feel right so we went with the second most popular song ‘faded’ by Alan Walker and it was perfect!
