P1 – Learning (B)log – Week 6

This week we have learned the sounds r and h and Frisky 5.  We learned about making shoeboxes for the children who don’t have any toys.  We went to Art with Mrs Johnston, Fun Fit with Mrs Murray and worked with all the big boys and girls in Task Force.

This week we have enjoyed making 100 piece jigsaws, playing in the sandpit, Lego,  jelly in the water tray and Show and Tell.

Next week we will be learning 2 new sounds, a new number, continuing with our reading and lots of new play activities.

task force

On Monday we get into new Task Force groups for this year. The whole school got into mixed age groups. First we got a piece of paper and wrote our names in the middle then in the top left was corner was we had to write what our favourite toy was. In the top right corner we had to write what our favourite place to go was. In the bottom left corner we had to write what our  favourite food was. In the bottom right corner was what clubs we go to. We wrote about this so we could get to know each other. Then we made a group tree. We each drew our hand and wrote our names on the hands and then we decorated them with glitter and gems or whatever design you wanted. After making our hand prints we glued the hand on a picture of a tree that we made and stuck the hand on the tree. Then we had to think of a name for our group. Everyone worked together really well. Primary 3 being teachers!

Today, primary 2 were learning about division for the first time. After spending some time discussing it as a class, every P2 paired up with two P3s who showed them how to do division using cubes. The P3s were fantastic at explaining and helping their classmates figure out the workbook page too. I’m very proud of how well everyone managed to listen to each other. It’s great to have experts in the class when you’re learning a new skill, P2 are very lucky!

3 times table fortune tellers!

Today P3 started learning their 3 times table. They worked in groups of 4, and followed instructions to make a 3 times table fortune teller! We managed to come up with lots of different ways to play with the fortune teller, and everyone did a fantastic job of explaining their rules. I was really impressed with everyone, especially for how well they worked together to follow the tricky instructions!

P2/3 Topic work with P7

Today P7 came through to our classroom to help the P2/3s do some topic work. Our class split into 9 groups, and with the help of a P7, each group researched a different Viking God. We spent 20 minutes looking for interesting facts, and for the second 20 minutes, P7 showed P2/3 how to make a PowerPoint. By the end of topic time we managed to get all 9 PowerPoints saved for the P2/3s to present in class next week. It was great to see everyone working so well together. Thanks a lot to the very helpful Primary 7s!

Are you a supertaster?

Have you ever heard of supertasters? This week, pupils in primary 4,5,6 & 7 were investigating.

Supertasters experience bitter tastes more strongly than other people because they have a higher number of taste receptors within their fungiform papillae – the big pink bumps on your tongue which contain your taste buds.

By counting the number of fungiform papillae on a tongue, you can determine whether someone is a supertaster, a taster or a non-taster.

We did an experiment to find out.

Our results:

We discover that 20% of pupils were ‘non-tasters’, 54% were ‘tasters’ and 26% were ‘supertasters’.

We can’t wait to try the next experiment with…

Primary 1&2 made a calendar

We are thinking about time this term and decided to make a calendar.

Primary 2 made the grid part of the calendar and had to think about the year, month names, days of the week and the number of days in each month.  They worked really hard together to complete all 12 months for our calendar.

Primary 1 thought about months, seasons, weather and special events then designed a picture for each month.

We now have a calendar in the P1/2 and P2/3 classroom to look at and use.
