Primary 1 Learning (B)log – Week 7

This week we have  been finding jewels and gems in the sandpit.  We have learned the sounds m and d and Snappy Six.  We made line drawings of our houses with Mrs Johnston in Art.  We had a visit from Joan, Signe’s Gaggie, to tell us about what school was like when she was little  and also a visit from Yufeng Lei who is going to be coming to our school to help us learn Mandarin.  We have really enjoyed playing with the Lego and thinking about numbers at our challenge table.  We also got 3 new books from Miss Spall which we read in class then voted on which one was our favourite.

Next week we will be thinking about all the sounds that we have learned so far and we will be learning a new number.

Shoebox appeal 2017

On a recent trip to Shetland, Finlay Mackenzie who works for Blythswood care gave a talk to Primary pupils about the shoebox appeal. Shoeboxes are filled with gifts like shampoo, socks, a notepad, small toy and then delivered to someone in need. They are distributed to Albania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Kosovo, Moldova, Pakistan, Romania, Serbia and Ukraine.  If you would like to fill a shoebox for someone this Christmas you can take it to the school office which is our local collecting point – last collection day Monday 30th October.

task force

On Monday we get into new Task Force groups for this year. The whole school got into mixed age groups. First we got a piece of paper and wrote our names in the middle then in the top left was corner was we had to write what our favourite toy was. In the top right corner we had to write what our favourite place to go was. In the bottom left corner we had to write what our  favourite food was. In the bottom right corner was what clubs we go to. We wrote about this so we could get to know each other. Then we made a group tree. We each drew our hand and wrote our names on the hands and then we decorated them with glitter and gems or whatever design you wanted. After making our hand prints we glued the hand on a picture of a tree that we made and stuck the hand on the tree. Then we had to think of a name for our group. Everyone worked together really well. We learned how to write our names in Japanese. Cara’s name in Japanese translates to (Kara). Amber’s name translates to ( anbaa) and Jonathan’s name translates to (Jonasan).

We really enjoyed our lesson today. By Cara, Jonathan and Amber.

This week we have learned our new sounds – ‘e’, ‘c’ and ‘k.’  We learned about Feathery 4  and then we made some peacock fans.  We have thought about day and night and also looked at how children’s lives have changed from over 100 years ago.

We really enjoyed Roald Dahl day.  We had pink eggs for dinner, painted Roly-Poly Birds and had a fun time up in the library.  We liked playing in the sand tray and making lots of models.  We have enjoyed balancing on the wobble boards, dressing up in the Spanish dress using the castanets “ck, ck, ck” and we have loved sharing some of our favourite books from home with the class.

Roald Dahl Day and our school trip

This week we had a Roald Dahl day. We dressed up as characters from the books and had lots of fun in the library. Some of the activities were a Roald Dahl inspired treasure hunt, there was a snozzcumber stew where we had to fish for 6 counters while blindfolded and we had 30 seconds and there was also a Roald Dahl book quiz. We also made Roald Dahl inspired drinks. It was lots of fun!

We also went on a school trip to the observatory in Lerwick  and the Sound gospel hall. We learned they had to set of a weather balloon at 12am  and again at 12pm. It cost £80 per balloon, so that’s £160 a day which means they spend £58400 a year. At the sound gospel hall we learned a bit about a different stories in the Bible at each station and then do a quiz about what we had learned. It was also lots of fun!

This week we did science with Mr.Rose, this term we are doing water with him. We were saying that all living things need water, we also learned about the water cycle.
