Play Pedagogy in Primary 1

Content – An opportunity to connect with others, share practice and collaborate with teachers across the Borders on various stages of their play journey. The sessions will be facilitated by the Early Years Pedagogy Team, the focus of each session will be chosen by the teachers attending.

Aims – The Early Years Teacher Team will:

  • Share key messages about Play Pedagogy principles in the Early Years.
  • Facilitate discussions about what these key messages look like in practice across the Borders and beyond.
  • Encourage collaboration across settings to work towards a shared understanding of quality play and learning in SBC

De-escalation: Understanding & Responding to Behaviours that Challenge

The course will consider the drivers of behaviour, consider our reflective practice and suggest strategies to support others (pupils and staff).

 

Aims:

1. Understand where behaviour comes from

2. Identify some signs of dysregulation

3. How to support the children we work with and each other

A series of 5 bitesize virtual training sessions developed in line with the SBC Early Level Portal STEM pages and the National STEM Nation Award, evidenced through practitioner inquiry tasks.

Aims:

To increase knowledge and confidence to support and extend STEM through spaces, experiences and interactions, evidenced through practitioner inquiry tasks.
To introduce and support consideration of STEM Nation Award- Education Scotland.

Neurodiversity: Deepening our understanding and sharing strategies for Additional Support Needs across Early Level

Course Contents:

Deepening our understanding of a range of neurodiverse presentations.

Exploring strategies to support children, with a needs based approach.

Ensuring educators’ knowledge of policy and procedures for effective documentation.

Aims:

Session 1. To uplevel our knowledge on a variety of Additional Support Needs and brain types.  To understand ways that children communicate their needs through their behaviours.  To help develop nurturing, consistent support through strong relationships.

Session 2. To support Neurodiverse / Additional Support Needs to positively impact all. Explore what we can do to support through our Core Provision. Developing a holistic multi-agency approach and strong links with families.

Session 3. Strengthening understanding of record keeping and individual support plans. To share impact of change for child and educator.

Target Audience – ELC practitioners, Primary 1 teachers, 0.1s, teachers and support staff

This course is run online over 3 twilight sessions from 4pm – 5:30pm:

Health Care Training

The School Nursing Team are going to provide an information session in each cluster. This will cover the information from the modules on SBLearn – Asthma, Anaphylaxis and Epilepsy.

Unfortunately there will not be an input from the diabetic team. It will still be a requirement that the staff attending to complete the modules online prior to this session as the team will provide additional support and answer any queries which they may have.

The training will run from 4-5pm.

Healthy Beginnings: MAP of Health Behaviour Change Training Programme

MAP – Health Behaviour Change Training Programme

This learning programme is for colleagues working in early years whose role involves helping people and families to make positive health and lifestyle related changes. It provides a guide to structure behaviour change conversations (using the MAP model) and evidence-based behaviour change techniques (BCTs) which help people make changes.

Workshops are an essential part of the program and are being offered by virtual attendance on MS teams. Please see the flyer and the learner pathway for further details including closing date for registration. Early registration is recommended as places are limited.

Pondering pedagogy in Early Learning and Childcare

This 6 part professional learning opportunity is for Early Learning and Childcare (ELC) practitioners who are interested in developing their knowledge and skills further in the areas set out below. It will be of particular interest to those who are in their first 4 years of practice, however is relevant to all practitioners who work in ELC.

The outline of the 6 sessions are as follows:

Session 1: 24th September 2024 – What I need to grow and develop

Session 2: 29th October 2024 – Pedagogy and play

Session 3: 26th November 2024 – Observation, interpretation and documentation

Session 4: 28th January 2025 – Interactions, Experiences and Spaces

Session 5: 18th February 2025 – Responsive and Intentional Planning

Session 6: 25th March 2025 – Transitions

**Please note all session times are 3.30pm – 5pm and by registering you are signing up to attend all six sessions**

Before each session, there will be a 30 minute video sent to you, which will encourage you to reflect on your current practice. It is important on signing up to this event that you commit to completing this independent learning before attending sessions. The sessions will then be used to explore these themes further, through professional dialogue, reflection and collaboration with other practitioners.

By engaging with these sessions it is hoped that you will be able to reflect on your current practice and add to this by building new knowledge from listening to those attending also share their practice, perspectives and points of view.

These sessions are a linked series and it is important that when signing up, you are committed to attending all six sessions.
