🐋 Blue Planet 🌎

This term as our topic we have been looking at our blue planet. We started learning all about the structure of the Earth, different rocks and minerals and even got the chance to investigate some local fossils that Miss Houston found near Kirk Hill just outside of Dailly. These fossils showed us that an ancient seabed was once there, up on the top of the hill!

We have done some thorough research on the oceans around the

world and will continue to look at the life in the oceans, how we humans depend so much on it and ultimately how important it is that we start to look after our blue planet. There is so much to learn and we are all so excited about the things we still have to do, therefore, this topic will run into Term 2.

Community Litter Picking

This term our topic is Blue Planet and we have been learning all about the impact that plastic pollution can have on wildlife. We have committed to giving up some time each month to do a litter pick around the village in the hope that it will reduce the amount of plastic interfering with our ecosystems. So far we have collected around 10kg of litter from our local woodland areas. We are going to continue this throughout the year.

Dolphin House P7/6 Residential

At the very start of the term P7/6 were extremely lucky to take part in a residential trip to Dolphin House at Culzean. We were welcomed warmly as the first school to return to Dolphin House since the pandemic began and we certainly couldn’t have asked for a better week away. Our trip was filled with loads of outdoor activities such as mountain biking, caving, canoeing, orienteering and rockpooling. We also enjoyed learning some new life skills such as making our beds and organising ourselves without adults. A fun week full of laughter, learning and embracing new things was had by all. P7/6 will continue to work on their John Muir Award by sharing their experience of their trip over the next term.

P7 Trip

Primary 7 had a great day at Dean Park then The Garage for go-karting and bowling. This was a special treat for them as they have missed out on the usual end of year celebrations due to Covid restrictions. It was a very busy and very fun day!

Bikeability

Bikeability Scotland is the national cycle training programme for school children. The children receive comprehensive training to give them the skills and confidence to cycle safely and responsibly on roads.

There are three levels of training, and pupils are taught by qualified school staff and parent helpers  to make sure they have the confidence to make independent journeys on their bikes.  The scheme is run by Cycling Scotland.  We offer Level 1 in Primary 5 (playground only) and only once the pupils have mastered the basic skills and manoeuvres they will go on to Level 2 in Primary 6/7 to apply their skills on road.

This is a national initiative which promotes safe cycling and bicycle maintenance.  Participants are assessed as they progress through the training and are awarded a badge and certificate on completion of the course.

Our aim is that the children become more aware of the importance of road safety in relation to themselves and other road users.
