What has been happening in P2/1??

Primary 2/1 have had an exciting term 1. We have welcomed our 6 new shiny primary 1s who have all settled in well to school and are following the rules and routines of the class.

Literacy

Primary 1 have been introduced to Inky the mouse who brings them a new sound every week to learn. He brings a song with him to help us remember the sound and words that can be associated with it. So far, we have learnt, S, A, T, P, I and N and have used lots of different strategies to help us learn these.

Primary 2 have been learning new graphemes together and playing a range of new games and strategies to help us learn. We have been challenging ourselves to learn tricky words and showing great progress so far! We have also been using the Julia Donaldson Songbird books to consolidate the new graphemes and tricky words we have been learning.

Talk for Writing

Primary 2 had an interesting visitor in the classroom who left big footprints and a note. It was a dragon! He introduced us to the story ‘Kassim and the Greedy Dragon’. We have been working together to learn the story and complete different writing challenges to help us develop our writing skills. We can’t wait to see what else the dragon has done.

Numeracy

Primary 1 have been learning the numbers to 10 by visiting Ten Town. Each number is represented by a character who has a story and a song to help us remember. We have developed this by introducing addition to 5 and using the concrete materials to help us. We have also been learning about patterns and using lots of different materials to demonstrate this. We will be moving onto look at shape before the October week.

Primary 2 have been challenging themselves to learn the numbers to 100 and looking at their value. We have been developing our knowledge of place value and breaking numbers down into hundred, tens and ones. Everyone is enjoying using the base ten material to help us. We have also been learning about estimating and rounding as well as adding and subtracting 2 and 3-digit numbers. Pattern has also been our beyond number topic, with a focus on number patterns. We will also be moving onto shape before the October holidays.

Topic

Our topic this term has been animals. We have enjoyed learning all about different animals, where they come from and lots of interesting facts all about them. We had a focus on animals that live on land or water, mothers and their young, zoo animals and being able to place different exotic animals on a map to explain where they come from. It has been an enjoyable topic and all of the class have shown lost of interest in learning more.

PE

Our PE days are a Monday and Wednesday and we are required to change into a change of shoes, t-shirt and shorts to be able to participate. We have had a focus this term on ball skills, with lots of practice of throwing and catching. We are beginning to show great progress with this and will be moving onto tennis after October.

Outdoor learning.

Outdoor learning takes part every Friday with P1 and P2 going out alternate weeks. P1 have been joining the EYC with Mrs McLean and P2 with P3&4 with Mrs Parker.

Term 2 will see Mrs McLean going out with P2 and Mrs Parker joining P1 and the EYC.

We are so excited to see what Term 2 will bring us and what crazy Christmas activities we can get up to!
