Wk Beg 11.09.17

Good evening, I hope you are all enjoying your weekend.  Please find below homework news and class updates.

Homework

This week is Maths week and as such there will be no reading or spelling homework.  We will still enjoy ERIC time (Tuesday) and read and munch (Friday). Children have enjoyed sharing a variety of stories with myself and Primary 6G.  Please note pupils can bring along comics, magazines, or children’s newspapers to read in class as well as books.

Children will be issued with their word walls this week and focus words will be highlighted. We would like your child to practise reading and recognising these words.  They may do more than the words highlighted if they wish.

In class we will be revising our first 3 sounds – sh, th and ch – as well as the spellings of our common words.  This can also be done at home.  Here is a link to the game the children have been playing in class to learn their sounds.  http://www.ictgames.com/forestPhonics/fullV_public/index.html

Pupils will be issued with a maths bingo sheet on Monday for homework and can complete as many tasks as they wish.  Sumdog is proving very popular in Primary 2C and all children should now have their usernames and passwords in their homework diaries. Please let me know if your child does not have their details and I will provide a copy for you.

News

This week is Maths week and the children will be involved in lots of fun maths activities.   On Thursday 14th September we plan to walk to the coop.  The pupils are allowed to bring £1 to spend if they wish.  We will also be recording some prices and working with a partner to note down different items and prices in the shop.  We are looking for 2 adult helpers to join us if possible.  We will be going between 9:30 and 10:30.  If you think you can help please pop a note in the bag or diary on Monday night and I will get back to you as soon as possible with arrangements. Thank you in advance.

Pupils were given a brown envelope on Thursday containing letters. Please ensure these are returned as one of them is the local walking permission that we need for Thursday.  Please don’t hesitate to contact me if there are any problems.

We have had a fantastic week in class and I was very impressed with the rainshakers that pupils made on Friday. We had a great time shaking along to the beat of the Amazon rainforest song and the bright colours certainly helped make up for the gruesome outdoor weather!

Thank you for your continued support and enjoy the week ahead.

Engineer Visits

During technologies time this week, P2C and P2R were lucky enough to have two very special visitors. Craig and Jennifer came to tell us all about their jobs as engineers. They explained what they do in their job and the different skills they need to use to do it well.

We are learning all about the world of engineering so we can become members of the Institution of Primary Engineers!

Thank you very much to Craig and Jennifer for coming along to visit us!

Sumdog Contest – Maths Week Scotland

As part of our celebrations and participation in Maths Week Scotland (11th-17th September), our P2-7 pupils have been entered into the Sumdog National Contest.

How it works

To take part, pupils simply play Sumdog’s maths games. Scores are based on accuracy and the questions are tailored to each student’s level – so everyone has a fair chance. The contest runs from 8am on Friday 8th to 8pm on Thursday 14th September. Pupils will be given time in class to play but can play at any time during this period.

Rewards for pupils

As well as improving pupils’ confidence, speed and accuracy with their number bonds and tables, as a reward for taking part, each pupil who answers 100 questions will receive an item for their Sumdog House.

Park Mains Cluster Schools

We will be competing against schools throughout the whole of Scotland but we will be focussing on beating our closest primary schools: Bargarran, Barsail, Inchinnan, Langbank and Rashielea. Our Daily Score will be posted on the Blog, so keep your eyes peeled to check our position on the Leaderboard!

Please save this link to allow your child to login to Sumdog without having to enter the school code:

Good luck and try your best!

Maths Week Scotland, 11-17 September

Dear Parent,

We have organised many fun activities to help promote numeracy and maths as part of Maths Week Scotland. A few of the main messages that Maths Week Scotland wants to promote:

  • Maths skills, understanding and confidence are important for everyone.
  • Everyone can ‘do’ maths; it’s a way of learning and thinking that we all use and can develop.
  • Maths ‘is everywhere’ and relevant to day-to-day life and work – decision making, problem solving, budgeting, planning, assessing probability and risk, and many more.
  • Being confident about and enjoying maths is about commitment and learning. It’s not ‘a gift’; it’s something we can all acquire if we want to.

Please read below to find out some of the fun activities your child will take part in:

  • Each stage will be involved in one full day of fun maths activities where they will visit different teachers to practise and learn new maths skills. This will take place on Tuesday12th September.
  • P2-7 classes have been entered into the Sumdog National competition which runs from 8am, Friday 8th to 8pm, Thursday 14th September. Your child has been issued with their Username and password. They will be playing the games during class time and they can also play the games at home. We are competing against the whole country but focussing on beating our local schools in the cluster. Check our Blog and Twitter for daily updates!
  • Your child will only have Maths and Numeracy homework during Maths Week and we would encourage you to help to promote the importance of maths and numeracy in their everyday lives. The homework will be a checklist of suggested activities where they can record what they have done. Photos and any extra evidence are encouraged!
  • We will be visiting the local Co-op and would like the pupils to buy a small item so it would be great if you could give your child some money to spend (£1 max). Adult/parent helpers will be required to accompany the classes on their visit.
  • We have fun Maths Trails available at the Main Office/Class Teacher for you to complete with your child or on their own by walking around the school grounds and on their walk home. Please ask for copy and complete with your child before or after school. Send the completed form in with your child to their class teacher.
  • Every day at 10am we will take part in RIC (Renfrewshire is Counting). The pupils will do counting activities, e.g. games, forwards and backwards counting sequences, multiples or times tables, , number patterns and sequences, relevant to their level. This should last about 10 minutes.
  • We will create Maths in Art designs. Winners form P1-3, P4-5 and P6-7 will be entered into the cluster school competition. Winners will be announced on Friday 15th September.
  • Renfrewshire Libraries have joined us in partnership to help celebrate Maths Week Scotland by planning activities that families can get involved in when visiting their local libraries. One such activity is a competition to create a new Skoob who loves Numeracy and Mathematics!
  • Please visit the websites below for more information and ideas of how to take part at home, as well as checking your child’s Blog.     http://www.gov.scot/mathsweek   http://www.readwritecount.scot/count/
  • If Tweeting about your celebration via Twitter, please use #MathsWeekScotlandRenfrewshire to get our efforts trending.

We are looking forward to sharing our passion of Maths and Numeracy with the pupils of Bishopton Primary and hope the enthusiasm spreads! If you have any questions about Maths Week Scotland, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Kind Regards,

Miss McDowall

P7S Build-a-Business – Order Form

P7S Superhero Smoothie Recipe Book

In P6, we were given a task to design a superhero themed smoothie. The colours in the smoothie had to match up with the superhero we had picked. As a class we voted for our top 3 favourite recipes and made them up for taste-testing. They were delicious!

We have now turned our amazing recipes into a Superhero Smoothie Recipe Book. This is an electronic book (not printed) and are for sale for £1.50 for a limited time. They contain loads of different fruit, juice and yogurt recipes and are available by completing the contact form on this post.

If you would like to order our amazing smoothie e-book, please fill out the contact form to advise our management team. Please send the money to P7S in a labelled envelope (exact money only please!). It will all be added up by our finances team during our Build a Business time on a Friday and the recipe book will be emailed out to you as soon as we can.

Thank you for supporting the P7S Build-a-Business topic!

Week beginning 04/09

Good evening!

I hope you all had a lovely, relaxed weekend.

Homework was issued today. Our spelling rule this week is ‘th’. Please remind your child to make sure they are using their best handwriting for homework.

Each child also has a reading book; please don’t worry if they appear too easy/difficult, I am still in the process of completing reading records. Hopefully these will be completed by the end of the week so that the children can have texts of the appropriate level next week. Thank you for your patience! Children should be reading a little bit every night and practicing their word walls words.

Last week P2B made rain shakers as part of our rainforest topic. The children enjoyed discussing the sounds we would hear in the rainforest, creating their rain shakers and having a dance to rain forest music. It was great fun! Thanks to everyone who brought water bottles in, we even had spares at the end of the lesson! The children will also be learning about rainforest plants and endangered animals over the next couple of weeks!

Tomorrow, the children will enjoy a theatre performance in the morning at school, followed by an active music session from NYCoS. It’s going to be a great day!

We have also teamed up with P5D for our read and munch sessions and we hope to keep this up every Friday.

I hope you all have as enjoyable a week as P2B is going to have!

NEW! Stage Blogs and Site Changes!

You may have noticed some changes on our school blogs. To allow us to keep you updated with all the wonderful work happening at Bishopton Primary we have had to set up each stage with their own blog. These look just the same as before and you should be able to navigate between the main school site, and the class blogs, easily.

For example, if your child is in P5S you can click on the link down the left hand side of the main page to access the posts specific to them, or go via the Class Blogs menu at the top of the page. Both links will take you to the same place. This is where posts meant only for P5S will be located.

To view posts meant for everyone (eg. upcoming events, menu changes, school-wide news) you can select Whole School News from the list on the left hand side or from the News menu at the top of the page. These posts are also located in a section on the right hand side of all of the class blogs.

We highly recommend subscribing to your class updates (using the Subscribe to Primary… link). This will send an email every evening with all updates specific to the class and all Whole School News posts.

We hope you enjoy using the blogs and seeing what is happening in the school.

Week Beg 04.09.17

Good evening,

I hope you have all had a nice weekend and enjoyed a little of the sunshine. Please see below for homework details and class updates.

This week our spelling sound is th.  Our 4 common words and 4 th words will be inside the homework jotters.  The spelling instructions are stuck into the front cover of the jotters.

Your child will be issued with a reading book this week. Please read a little each night with them if possible.

Last week P2C paired up with P6G for our Friday ‘Read and Munch’ session. Children thoroughly enjoyed spending time with Primary 6 and it was a pleasure to see them chatting about stories with their elder peers.

Several pupils have now brought in books to share with the class and it has been lovely to hear about their favourite tales. We will continue to have ERIC time on a Tuesday.

Your child will receive their Sumdog login this week. This pass code will be stuck to the inside cover of your child’s diary.

Other news

Show and tell has been a roaring success in P2C! A huge well done to all the boys and girls for standing up with confidence and enthusiasm to share their news and achievements. Show and tell will be an ongoing feature this term – I look forward to hearing more about their hobbies and adventures.

Our rainforest topic is now well under way. Last week we learned about deforestation and endangered animals, with children contributing passionately to discussions about the subject. We worked in our topic groups to create images of some of the creatures that are endangered and learned to work co-operatively.

The children will be making rainshakers in one of the lessons. If possible, could children please bring in an empty, clean plastic bottle. Thank you to those pupils who have already brought one in.

Thank you for your continued support. We are looking forward to a fun-filled week ahead. Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions.
