‘Singing to Learn, Learning to Sing’ Event

On Thursday 8th March, 15 of our Primary 5/6 pupils attended The Royal Concert Hall in Glasgow to represent Renfrewshire Schools at a ‘Big Sing’ event. The singing event was organised by the Music Education Partnership Group to launch a new resource that will be available to all Primary and Early Years Establishments through GLOW. The partnership group have been involved in developing A National Framework for Singing – Singing to Learn, Learning to Sing.

The launch took the form of a ‘Big Sing’ and was led by Christopher Bell. The children had to prepare 4 songs to sing on the day. They sang beautifully together and we were so proud to represent our Local Authority of Renfrewshire to promote this new resource.

Fairtrade Workshop

Four members of our committee spent the day with Rainbow Turtle in Paisley. They met two coffee producers from  the Mzuzu Coffee Planters Co-operative.

They learned about the 10 principles of Fairtrade, completed tasks with other children from other school, learned about Malawi and deepened their knowledge of Fairtrade and how it can promote human values.

An interesting fact of the day – The coffee plant that grows in Malawi originated from The Royal Edinburgh Botanic Garden.

Making Maths Count

This week our Cluster Mathematics and Numeracy Teacher Mrs. Smith led a parental engagement workshop on the Government Initiative ‘Making Maths Count’.  She demonstrated ‘Thinking Boards’ and problem solving strategies to parents and guardians,  talking through examples of how to complete written calculations.

She spoke about the importance of Mathematical and Numeracy vocabulary as well as involving parents in games to promote this.

The event ended with the launch of our new Parent Prompt Books.

Active Schools – Basketball (Athlete Visit)

The children who attend the Afterschool Basketball Club received a special guest visit in the form of Team Scotland, Glasgow Rocks and BasketballPaisley athlete Chris Cleary on Wednesday 7th February. Chris delivered top quality coaching and challenged the children to work on their dribbling, passing and shooting skills at an action-packed session. The children had a fantastic time, working hard and displaying some great skills.

Chris also hosted a ‘Question and Answer’ session of which he talked of his journey as a local athlete through to Commonwealth 2018 athlete. Questions included “How tall are you?”, “Can you slam dunk it?” to “Who was your idol growing up?”.  Chris  obliged in answering, as well as inspiring the children to ‘be the best that you can be’ through effort, always learning and accepting that mistakes happen.

February 2018 Update

At today’s meeting the group looked at a Powerpoint which explained about the upcoming Malawi Farmers 90kg Rice Challenge which will begin in the school on the 5th March during Fairtrade Fortnight. We discussed promotion, recipes, ideas and allocated jobs to ensure it will be a success. A letter / leaflet will be designed by the younger members and given out to pupils detailing information about the Rice Challenge and our upcoming Coffee Afternoon which will take place on Thursday 8th March at 1.45p.m.

In addition, Renfrewshire has been most fortunate this year in that two coffee producers from Malawi are in Scotland for a short visit. Three members of our team have been invited to the Rainbow Turtle Fairtrade Event in Paisley on 5th March to meet the producers and learn more about the part we play in Fairtrade.

February 2018

We undertook a travel survey of our local area and counted the number of cars, bikes, buses and pedestrians. We found that cars are by far the most popular method of travel, followed by pedestrians.

Litter and waste have organised and are due to announce their new inter-class recycling challenge. Pupils will be asked as a class to start recycling paper and plastic. The winning class will receive a very special award!
