Scots Poetry Assembly

Yesterday we had our annual Scottish Poetry Assembly.  It was lovely to be able to have all our class winners together in one room for the remote event which was streamed to the rest of the school.

As always, the standard was very high.  Across the school teachers and SMT had a really hard job to judge the entries and select a winner from each class. What talented children we have!

I did not envy Mrs McNaught the task of deciding on a winner from each stage. Every single performer was excellent and it took Mrs McNaught a long time to decide.

The winner for P1-3 was Finlay from P3AM

P4&5 was Lewis from P4M

P6&7 was Tiernan from P6M

Well done everyone!

Health and Wellbeing Census 2021/22

Over the next few months, our local authority is planning to ask all pupils in P5 to S6 to take part in a survey about their health and wellbeing. The findings will help our local authority to understand the needs, strengths and possible concerns of children and young people, which will help plan future improvements to local services.

Please look out for a letter which you should shortly be receiving that will provide you with more detailed information about the Census, and provides you with the opportunity to let us know if you don’t wish your child to take part.

Scots Poetry Assembly

As you know we have been working very hard on our Scots and Burns poems. This year, due to Covid restrictions,  class winners will recite their poems to the school in an online assembly. Mrs McNaught will choose an overall winner. The lucky winner from P1- 3, P4&5 and P6&7 will be awarded a trophy to hold for a year and the class winners a certificate.

We would invite the children to wear something tartan this Thursday 3 February, if they have it, to help us celebrate Burns Day.

We are all looking forward to the performances and pictures will be posted on the school blog after the assembly.

Thank you once again for your support.

Free Bus Travel – 5-21 Year Olds

To access the scheme, young people need to apply for a new entitlement card.

5 to 10-year-olds will use a junior card which does not require a photograph and those aged 11 and over will use an updated Young Scot card – which is also a photo identity and proof of age card.

New cards can be applied for using the website below:

  • ParentsPortal.Scot – This is an additional online national portal that allows parents of children aged between 5 and 10-years-old to apply for the ‘Junior’ version of the National Entitlement Card.  This is the quickest way for parents to access the junior card for their children.

The usual process of delivering Young Scot cards to Primary 7s will take place in March and April 2022 and this year will include a consent process to allow access to the free travel scheme too.

French Christmas Card Competition Winners

Before Christmas, some classes took part in a modern language competition organised by the council’s MFL co-ordinator.

The children were asked to design a Christmas card. The card had to include at least 20 words in French, and some of these words had to be incorporated as part of the design in a less obvious way.
Two children from Primary 7 were chosen as the winners and you can see their fantastic designs below. As a prize, they were each gifted a £10 Amazon voucher. Well done to all the children that took part and a massive well done to the girls.

Missing Something?

The lost property from all of our classrooms will be made available to view in our middle playground on Thursday & Friday from 2.45 pm this week (weather permitting).

Our class teachers make every effort to return any missing items to pupils but we kindly ask that parents and carers ensure that all items of school clothing, footwear and lunchboxes are labelled.

Taylor Wimpey Design-a-Sign Competition

Before Christmas, Taylor Wimpey West Scotland challenged the Primary 5, 6 and 7 pupils of Bishopton Primary and Dargavel Primary to design a sign that could be installed near its new show homes off Craigton Drive in Dargavel Village to encourage drivers to slow down.

Two winning designs  – created by Lucas (P6)  from Bishopton Primary and Olivia  (P5) from Dargavel  Primary –have been recreated as signs that are now installed near the entrance to its latest phase of new homes.  Each winner also won a £50 book token.

The overall standard of designs was so high that a further six posters were chosen to create a banner for Taylor Wimpey’s show area car park to remind drivers to keep their speed down whilst moving around the area.  Each child also received a £20 book token. Bishopton’s winners were Anna (P6), Hollie (P6) and Jamie (P5).

Taylor Wimpey also kindly provided both schools with an additional sign for each of the overall winners to be place outside our schools.  We are currently making arrangements to have Lucas’s sign mounted.

As always, we were overwhelmed by the standard and enthusiasm of our pupils and are very proud of them.

Attached are some of the photographs of the prize giving event at Taylor Wimpey.

New School Menu – January 2022

New school meal menus are now live, providing children with some of the food they love while still keeping within the new food and drink in schools legislation.

Thanks to parents and pupil feedback, some favourites returning will be:

  • Chicken poppers
  • Sandwich options
  • Hot dogs
  • Vegetarian sausage rolls

Vegan and vegetarian options will be available, and we will continue to provide medical diets as required.

School meals still need to be balanced to ensure they meet the new food regulations, but children will get their favourites as part of the new menu, just not all the time.

Check www.renfrewshire.gov.uk/schoolmeals for more details.

Visit https://www.renfrewshire.gov.uk/article/2880/Primary-school-lunch-menus to see the AMEY school meal menu.

Return to School Information

Dear Parent/Carer,

I hope you and your family had a good break over the festive period. We are looking forward to welcoming everyone back to school on Thursday 6th January. Current mitigations will still be in place.  Doors will be open from 8.45a.m. to help prevent large crowds in and around the school playground. We kindly ask that you do not arrive before this time to avoid queues or crowds forming.

A reminder that all adults who enter the playground should, if possible, wear a face covering and maintain a 2m distance from all other adults. We ask that only 1 adult per family attends at drop off and collection to keep adult numbers to a minimum.

One change that will be taking place is the reintroduction of class bubbles when pupils are inside the building. This will mean that pupils will, as much as possible, remain with their own classmates during teaching time. There is no need for pupils to maintain these bubbles outdoors, therefore pupils will still be able to mix with others in the playground at break times.

In order to ensure pupils remain with their bubble in the dining area, staggered lunch breaks will continue. P1-4 will have their lunch from 12.00-12.45 and P5-7 will eat from 12.45-1.30. As always please inform the school office if your child is a home lunch.

Adult visitors, including parents, are only allowed into the building if essential to their child’s wellbeing. Adults are asked to take an LFD test before coming into the school building.

Contact tracing will remain the responsibility of public health but we ask that you continue to let us know of any positive test results. Warn and inform letters will be text out if we are notified of a positive case within your child’s class. If you receive such a text we would ask that your child takes a LFD test before returning to school the next day.

As always if you have any questions  or concerns please contact the school directly. The school office will reopen at 8.30 a.m. on the 6th January.

Christmas Wishes

Dear Parent/ Carer,

On behalf of all staff in Bishopton Primary I would like to thank you for all your support since we returned to school in August 2022. I think it is fair to say that it has not been the school year that any of us had predicted just a few months earlier.

For the last 5 months we have been accommodating both Bishopton Primary and Dargavel Primary in our building and apart from being a little ‘cosy’ this has worked really well. Pupils and staff in every department have worked closely together to make this a positive experience for all. Today is the last day that we will have our Dargavel friends in our building. Many of the pupils and staff have been with us for a number of years and we will be very sad to say goodbye to them at the end of the day. New staff and pupils joined the Dargavel team and it has been a pleasure to get to know them, we will miss them too.  Everyone in Bishopton would like to wish Mr Carlton and his team all the best when their new building opens for business on the 6th January. We look forward to continuing our close relationship as Park Mains cluster colleagues.

As we started this school session we were optimistic that it would only be a few weeks before all restriction were lifted and we could quickly resume the full range of activities that we normally offer. Unfortunately COVID-19 had other plans and only last week we find ourselves with yet again another set of tighter guidance. We are grateful for the support and understanding of parents/ carers as we strive to deliver as many experiences in as safe a way possible for our pupils.  We can only hope that as we enter the Spring term the situation starts to improve.

As it currently stands we will be returning in January still under restrictions. We will post more information in the coming days so please continue to read the blog throughout the holidays for any changes.

Finally we would like to wish you and your family a safe and restful festive period.  We look forward to welcoming all of our pupils back to their classes on Thursday 6th January at 9.00a.m.

Arrangements for January 2022

Dear Parent/Carer,

As you will be aware, the staff and pupils of Dargavel Primary will move into their school at the start of the new term on the 6th January 2022.

At this time Bishopton Primary classes will move into their own classrooms. Please see the attachment for your child’s class for January. Class teachers will ensure pupils know where their class is before they stop next week. If you are in any way unsure of the door your child should use in January please speak to a member of staff in the playground and they will show you where to go.

At this time, all current mitigations remain in place and there will be no change to the start and end of the day procedures.

Pupils will finish on Monday 20th December and return on Thursday 6th January 2022.

We wish you all a very happy and safe festive period.

Scottish Government Free Bus Travel for Under 22s – Survey

online1.snapsurveys.com/under22travelsurvey

The closing date for all responses is 24th January 2022.

About the Survey

Do you have a child aged 5-16, or are you a young person aged 12-21? If so, please complete our short travel survey for a chance to win up to £250 in Love2Shop vouchers.

The Scottish Government will soon be launching the Free Bus Travel Scheme for young people between the ages of 5 and 21. This aims to encourage greener travel patterns, and increase opportunities for young people to engage in employment, education and social activities and not be excluded due to travel costs. Transport Scotland will monitor the scheme as it progresses to check on use and impact. The first step is to try and understand current travel patterns so that any changes after the scheme is introduced can be identified.

We would be grateful if parents/carers of younger children (i.e. those aged 5-16), or young people aged 12-21 themselves, could complete this short travel survey. The questionnaire asks about current travel behaviour, and your thoughts about bus travel generally and the free bus travel. This should take no more than 10 minutes to do.

Contact Us: If you have any questions about the work or problems completing the questionnaire, please contact our Project Manager, Elaine Wilson-Smith, at elaine@wellsideresearch.co.uk or on 0131 677 5522.

School Meals – January 2022

From Thursday 6 January 2022, all primary 5 pupils will be able to receive a universal school meal and it won’t cost parents a penny.

P5s will join P1, P2, P3 and P4 in receiving a universal school meal as part of the Scottish Government’s expansion of healthy meals to all primary pupils.

New school meal menus will also go live in January, providing children with some of the food they love while still keeping within the new food and drink in schools legislation.

The new school meal menus will go live on the council’s website by Thursday 23 December (once schools close). Check www.renfrewshire.gov.uk/schoolmeals for more details.
