P7 WW2: Dunkirk Homework Task

As part of your homework for this week you should access the link below on The Battle of Dunkirk. This was a very important battle during WW2. Your task is to research the battle, using the link. You should then summarise the main points relating to the battle, in around 50 wordsPlease post your completed summary of events on the blog by Tuesday 28th March. If you are unable to post on the blog, you should hand in a paper copy of your summary.

Remember when summarising you should only record the most important facts. These facts should be in your own words as much as possible.

The Battle of Dunkirk

The video below has some really interesting information on the about WW2. The information relating to Dunkirk starts at 2.16 and ends at 3.43. All of the video is worth a watch if you have time!

P3F Maths Bake Off Challenge!

Primary 3 are learning about weight. To help us with our learning we would love to be able to bake something at home which requires us to use measuring scales.

We would like to show our friends and our teachers what amazing bakers we are! Please take a photo of your child using the scales and the finished product. You can upload them to this post by replying or you could print them out and send them to school with your child.

We look forward to showing off our fantastic baking skills and our terrific tasty treats!

Fairyland Open Afternoon

Good evening,

I look forward to welcoming many of you into our classroom tomorrow to share our learning within our topic. The children may bring a costume with them tomorrow and can change into these after lunchtime. We will have various activities for the class tomorrow afternoon related to their Fairyland topic. I hope you enjoy sharing these activities with your child, and hearing the children read their own stories as well as some of their favourite fairytales.

Miss Hamilton

Michelangelo Ceiling Painting

As part of our European Art series, we looked at the work of the famous Italian artist Michelangelo! We learned about his work on the ceiling of the Sistine chapel and the detail that he used in his paintings, even though he painted them lying down! We had the chance to experience what it must have been like for Michelangelo today. We stuck paper underneath our desks and used pastels to recreate the dusty paint look of Michelangelo’s art. We found it hard but we tried our best and our drawings were good considering how we had created them! We enjoyed learning about Michelangelo’s life and getting to try out the techniques of a famous artist.

P6-7 Art Masterclass

In this afternoon’s Art Masterclass, we learnt about the colour wheel, use of line, perspective and tonal shading. After a quick demonstration, you got to work and I was blown away with the talented artists I had in the class! Although we don’t have a Masterclass session next week, I offered for you to come to my class at lunchtimes to finish them and I’m looking forward to seeing the finished designs.

Learning Outcome

I can create and present work that shows developing skill in using the visual elements and concepts. EXA 2-03a

Success Criteria

Your colour wheel must:

  • Include all 6 colours (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple)
  • Have the colours in the correct order
  • Show perspective of the buildings
  • Have a variety of line and pattern
  • Show tonal shading

P5S – Pointillism Painting

Image result for pointillism georges seurat

Last week for homework you looked at the work of Georges Seurat who uses Pointillism in his paintings (just like the one above). Pointillism is a technique which uses small, distinct dots of colour to form the image.

Today in class you used the same technique to create your own version of both a male and female brown trout. I am looking forward to showing your finished creations off in a couple of weeks at Parents’ Night.

Here are a few photographs of you hard at work.

P5S – Hot Seating!

Image result for dogs clipart

This morning we continued with our class novel: One Dog and his Boy by Eva Ibbotson. I am delighted at just how much you are enjoying this book. Please tell someone at home what has happened so far.

Today we had a few of you in the “hot seat” where you became one of the characters in the book: Hal, Kayley or Fleck. Everyone had to decide on a question they would like to ask each of these characters …… and what fabulous questions we had!

It is called a “hot seat” because you need to think quickly and respond to the questions posed by your classmates. I am so pleased you enjoyed this activity as it is a great way to not only explore the characters and plot of a story but it also builds on your communication skills. As we continue with our novel, we will have other opportunities to take part in this type of activity so if you didn’t get a chance today, your time in the “seat” will happen.

P5S – Making Music!

Image result for music notes

Today we had Mrs Lyle in teaching us some more about rhythm and another new note. We learned a new song about a house in New Orleans. Can you remember the words to tell someone at home?

Much fun was had by everyone when you got the opportunity to use the drumsticks. I was very impressed at just how well you all worked this morning – well done everyone!

P7M – WW2 Projects

This morning you presented your WW2 projects that you have had 5 weeks to prepare. I was impressed with the variety of topics and many different delivery styles. We had confident presenters who gave great eye contact, faced your audience and delivered your facts using a varied tone, to keep the audience’s interest. Some of you highlighted your drawings or images to point out interesting facts. We even had some home baking using ration recipes which worked a treat in winning us over!

I have your individual feedback ready to give you tomorrow but some general feedback for the majority of you:

  • Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse! This allows you to check you are within the time allocated and your family members can give you honest feedback about your delivery style (voice, body language, etc)
  • Put the facts into your OWN words. Taking another person’s words from the internet or a book is called plagiarism and it doesn’t show me you have understood your research. It also means you should be able to say the words!
  • If you have made a poster, chosen images for a powerpoint or made a model, talk about it! Please point out interesting facts and show us your hard work. Make use of the props and things yo have brought in.

Fairyland Open Afternoon

We are all looking forward to our Open Afternoon on Friday 17th March.

Here are the details –

  • one adult per child is invited

  • from  2pm to 3pm in your child’s class

  • please come in at the school office

  • visitors will be invited to leave by the classroom door at 3pm and children will get ready for home at the usual time

  • children are allowed to bring a costume to change into at lunchtime.

We look forward to sharing Fairyland activities with our visitors and showing what we have been learning about.

See you on Friday.

P7M – Goodnight Mister Tom

Last week, we read the climax of Goodnight Mister Tom (chapters 16 and 17). Today we responded to this by drawing what we thought they looked like during these chapters and then wrote what we thought they were thinking, saying and feeling.

I was really impressed with the detail of your illustrations and the thought put into their feelings and thoughts. Have a look below to see your work.

Big Pedal 2017

The Big Pedal competition is back.

From Monday 20th March to Friday 31st March children are invited to bring their bike or scooter to school. We would ask that an adult could check that the bike or scooter is safe.  Please bring a helmet or any other safety gear. Children are encouraged to bring a lock but they must be responsible for the key.

Every day we will count how many people cycled or scooted to school, including supporters ie parents, siblings.  We will enter our figures into the Big Pedal website run by cycling charity Sustrans.  You can follow our progress, Last year we were in the top 20 of over 1000 schools which took part throughout the UK.

You can find out more information on the Sustrans website.

We hope lots of people will join in, get healthy and have fun.

As well as cycling and scooting to school, every class will get out on their bikes and scooters during the day.

Let’s hope we have lovely spring weather for our active fortnight.

Happy cycling and scooting.
