P7 Mental Maths and Problem Solving

When answering maths questions, especially worded problems, it is important to know how to work through it. Below are some hints and tips on how to tackle maths questions and worded problems.

Problem Solving Strategies

*Remember that not all of these are suitable for every maths question. Choose the best strategy for the problem you are working on.

  • Look for the important words in the question. Write them down or underline them. Decide on what the question is asking you to do .e.g. multiplication? fractions? subtraction?
  • Look for a pattern. Can you see somehting happening over and over again? Will this help you solve the problem?
  • Have a go! Try an answer. Does the answer make sense?
  • Use a table or a chart. Will something like this help?
  • Use a drawing. Can you draw something about the problem? Will this help you to find the answer?
  • Work backwards. Can you start at the ned of the question to help work it out? Will your answer work?
  • Try an easier problem. Can you change the numbers in the question to make it simpler? Will this make finding the answer easier?
  • Make a model. Can you use paper or blocks to help you find the answer? Can you use people to help you find the answer?
  • Think logically. Can you tell somehting about the answer straight away? Can you get rid of answers that are not correct?

Mental Maths Strategies

We have been be practising these strategies in class throughout the year. Use the strategies that feel best to you because not every one will ‘feel’ natural for you.

P7M – Goodnight Mister Tom Book Reviews

This morning we finished reading our class novel, Goodnight Mister Tom by Michelle Magorian. I managed to read through the tears…just! You worked with a partner to discuss your thoughts and opinion about the book. Who were the main characters? Did you like them? How did they grow and change throughout the story?  What happened in the story? What is exciting? Did it keep you guessing? Would you recommend it and if so, who to? We will be watching the film on Friday morning, so we can compare them.

P7M – Dunkirk Homework Feedback

Well done to those of you who completed the Dunkirk research task (17/27). I was impressed that most of you used the article and video to select the key information and then para-phrased (reworded) it in your own words. This is an important skill for studying, researching and writing your own texts. I was pleased to see that the majority of you used correct punctuation, capital letters and spelling. Only a few of you made mistakes that could have been easily corrected if you had read over your work before submitting the post. These ‘quick fix’ errors are easily avoidable and it is your responsibility to check your work. The criteria was for the summary to be ‘around 50’ words and most of you hit the mark, however if you were way over please try to summarise the key points.

Please take the time to  read your peers’ summaries.

Alex

During ww2, Dunkirk was a retreat back to England by the British army across the English channel. It took place between the 26th of may-4th of june 1940. 338,226 were saved from beaches. Meanwhile British soldiers were still getting bombed by the germans. This evacuation was code named Operation Dynamo.

Reuben

On the 4th of July, 1940,Nazi forces seized the French port of Dunkirk that had nine days earlier been full of 338,000 British soldiers and a few French that had come up to help protect France from invasion but with the English Channel behind them and Nazi forces advancing on them they needed to evacuate the port and fast on any boat that was free.

1940 German army took over French port of Dunkirk. Month later German forces went through the west stormed into France May 24 ready to take Dunkirk. Germans stopped the attacks so their plans didn’t go to plan. People evacuated May 26. Men stranded Germans going towards them.Boats arrived to save them.German captured Dunkirk. Soldiers went back to fight

P3F Big pedal

Big Pedal continues this week. What a great start it’s been, P3F have  won the daily challenge AGAIN! That’s 3 days in a row now, well done! Hopefully we can continue this winning streak and hold on to the trophy!

We as a school are trying hard to get to the number 1 spot, we have been doing fantastically well as we managed to get to number 1 for Scotland, let’s keep trying hard. This lovely weather is perfect for all the family to get involved. Those extra points might be what makes the difference!

Thanks to all the effort that everyone is making, we can do this!

27.03.17

Good afternoon,

There will be no set homework this week for P2H. The children can enjoy the sunshine and practise what they have been learning in Literacy and Maths on the following websites if they wish:

www.ictgames.com/resources.html
www.topmarks.co.uk

Can I ask that any library books which have not yet been returned are brought into class this week. I will return any books which the children have finished reading and request books to be reissued if they are not finished.

As book bags were not given out today, the children have brought old work home from their trays in their school bags. Therefore, each child was given a clear pouch to put their letters in today, in order to make these easy to find.

As a reward for winning the most house points, the Eagles will have a non-uniform day on Friday.

I look forward to meeting with many of you on Tuesday and Wednesday this week.

Have a lovely week.

Miss Hamilton

P7 – WW2: The Battle of Britain and The Blitz Research Task

Today you will be learning about The Battle of Britain and the Blitz. Each member of your group will research a specific part of the Battle of Britain and then share their knowledge with the group. It is everyone’s responsibility to take as many notes as they can so that your group has as much information about the Battle of Britain and the Blitz as possible because you will be taking part in a quiz next topic session.

Each squadron member will become an expert on a different aspect. You will have a set amount of time to research before bringing together your notes to share with your squadron. Notes should be as detailed and accurate as possible.

The higher order thinking skill you will be practising is understanding because after researching you will have to explain the information to your group, paraphrasing and giving examples of what you have learned. The skill for work you will be practising is self direction because you are responsibile for your own learning and what you learn and feedback affects what your group learns (and ultimately how well you will do on the quiz).

Good evening everyone! I hope you have been having a lovely weekend in this glorious weather. Well, we have reached our final week of term 3. What a quick year it has been! Here is your last lot of homework for this term. Keep reading for your reminders for this week.

Reading:  A new core reader to complete at home will be issued tomorrow (Monday). Please complete the book for Thursday. There will be no written homework for this as all tasks will be completed in class. As always, if there is any vocabulary you are unsure of, please take a note of it and we will discuss it in class on Thursday.

Please remember to read aloud to someone at home. Once again, your feedback form should be completed, if possible, by the person who heard you read and returned to school for Thursday. A huge thank you to everyone who took the time to complete this again last week. I am thoroughly enjoying reading your comments and I hope you are enjoying hearing the children read to you.

Personal Reading Challenge: This is your final week of our Reading Challenge. How are you doing? Have you managed to reach the target number of books you set at the beginning of this term. If you have, a HUGE well done! If you haven’t there is still time! Use this week wisely. Please remember to bring your book to school as this will allow you to read it during our ERIC sessions.

Please remember to record the books in your reading passport as you finish them. The passport is kept in class. Remember this is your record of the number of books you have read so far this term.

Maths:  Our Big Maths Beat That scores are increasing and accuracy is pretty much 100% for all of you on the questions you answer. However, we do need to work on the speed of your calculations. Each week you should be able to answer more questions than you did the week before. I would like you to spend 15 minutes this week working on building your speed of calculations. Please use the link below to do so.

Multiplication Trainer

H&WB: A number of photographs have been posted on our class blog over the last few weeks. Please look at them with someone at home and leave a comment on the blog letting me know your thoughts on what we have been doing. This should be completed by Friday.

  1. All Pupil/Parent Response sheets should now have been returned to school. Parents’ Night appointments are  on Tuesday and Wednesday. I am looking forward to seeing your parents and chatting about your progress.
  2. Our Big Pedal will continue this week. Please continue to bring your bike or scooter to school. Please remember a helmet must be worn during our daily sessions in the playground. A plastic bag should be brought to protect your bike seat from the rain.
  3. We will be having our annual House Quiz on Thursday afternoon. Please come to school in house colours.
  4. Eagles gained the most house points over the last month and as a reward will have a non-uniform day on Friday.
