Masterclass – Just Dance

Image result for just dance

Today we started our new Masterclass sessions. I had the pleasure of venturing down to infants for my Masterclass and what fun we had. The boys and girls of P2-4 were so enthusiastic and it was wonderful to be a part of. The dance moves being displayed were simply wonderful – you are quite the movers! I am sure next week will be just as much fun.

Here are a few action shots from today’s session. Some are a little dark (sorry) but we had to turn the lights off so we could see the screen.

P5S – Brazil – Dancing like the Brazilians do ……..

What a fun time we had this afternoon in our P.E. session! Unfortunately we were unable to use the gym hall however we managed just fine with the space we had in class.

There was much hilarity as we tried to master some Latin dance moves as part of our topic. There were some tricky moves and some easy moves and even some very funny moves but you took it in your stride and gave it your all. The enthusiasm was wonderful to see! A HUGE well done P5S! I am looking forward to next week’s session already.

Here are some photographs of you practicing your moves. There are a few blurry ones due to them being “action” shots however you should still manage to make out the big smiles.

P5S – Brazil – Meet our new groups

Today you created the banners for over your groups and your new wall space. I have to say they look wonderful. Your group name was to relate to Brazil in some way and I think you managed that very well. Please explain to someone at home why your group chose the name they did and the link it has to Brazil.

Meet our new groups for term 2.

P5S – All About Brazil Part 1

Image result for brazil flag

Yesterday we started our new topic on Brazil with a research task in the IT Suite. Each of our new groups had to research a number of aspects relating to Brazil. You were to take suitable notes, with headings which you then used to decide on a group name. Are you able to share some interesting facts with someone at home? Do you know what the motto is on the Brazilian flag or how many stars it has on it?

Our Learning Outcome for this task was: I can create an interesting group name which is linked to Brazil.

I can discuss issues of the diversity of cultures, values and customs in our society. SOC 2-16c

I can make notes, organise them under suitable headings and use them to understand information, develop my thinking, explore problems and create new texts, using my own words as appropriate. LIT 2-15a

The skills were:

Skill for LearningSynthesis: I can list my research under suitable headings. I can use this information to help my group choose a suitable group name

Social Skill: As a group we can reach an agreement in the correct manner.

I was very impressed at just how well some of our new groups worked today on their first task together. I heard some great ideas being shared, notes were being discussed and when self-assessing many of you were very honest with how you worked together. Well done!

Here are some photographs of our new groups working on their Home Team Challenge.

Now that we are well into the swing of things in Primary 5, it is time to introduce our Personal Reading Challenge. This challenge will run alongside your weekly reading homework, however you will be in charge of choosing and recording the books you read.

On Monday (24th) I will discuss the finer points of our challenge but meantime I would like you to be choosing, or thinking about, your first book for the challenge.

Happy reading!

P5S – Homework w/b 24.10.16

Good afternoon everyone! I hope you have all had a fabulous October break so far. The weather has been relatively kind to those of us who stayed at home so I hope you have been out and about enjoying the dry days. Here is a rundown of your homework for this week. Please read the reminders as there are quite a few this week.

Spelling: Unit 15 or 22 should be completed, neatly, in your spelling jotter. Each word should be written out times. A creative spelling activity should be completed using ALL of your words. This task should be returned to school by Friday.

Please remember to practice your words throughout the week, NOT just when you are completing the task.

Book Detectives: Your Book Detectives homework will be issued on Thursday. It should be completed for Thursday 3rd November. Please remember that if you do not complete the task you will be unable to participate in the class lesson on this day.

Details of the task will be issued on Thursday.

Personal Reading Challenge: This term we will be completing a challenge to help increase the amount of reading you do each week. The challenge will be ongoing for the whole term. I will go over the finer details of the challenge with you in class on Monday.

Maths: Our maths homework will take a different format this term. Most weeks you will have worded problems to complete. These problems will be posted on our class blog. I have included links below for you to use. Please click on the relevant group. If you are unable to access the blog, please ask for a paper copy of the questions.

Group 1

Group 2

Your answers should be completed, neatly, in your maths homework jotter. I will let you know on Monday (24th) which group you are in so that you know which questions to answer. Please cover your jotter for Friday.

I know many of you enjoy accessing the games on Mangahigh. Please continue to do so, if you wish, as additional practice is always worth doing.

Art: As part of our Brazil topic we will be looking at a Brazilian artist: Beatriz Milhazes. Next week in class we will be recreating some of her paintings. For homework this week I would like you to access the link below and familiarise yourself with her work. Some of the vocabulary used is a little tricky but please remember if you are unsure of what a word means, please use a dictionary (or ask) to check the definition.

You should then write a short paragraph (no more than 50 words) about Beatriz and her work. This should be in your own words as much as possible – DO NOT just copy directly from the text. Let me know your personal thoughts on her paintings. Think about the following questions when writing your paragraph.

 • When and where was she born?
 • What style of art does she create?
 • What do you think of it?
 • Why do you think that?
 • Is there a particular painting you like?
 • Why do you like it?

Beatriz Milhazes

You should leave your paragraph as a post on our blog and I will publish them all at the end of the week. If you are unable to post on the blog, please complete your paragraph on paper. This task should be completed for Friday.

Here are your reminders for this week.

 1. Please remember that our lunch menu has changed for this week only. The menu scheduled for Monday will now be served on Thursday which means Thursday’s menu will be served on Monday.
 2. You should all have taken your P.E. kit home at the end of last term to be washed. Please remember to bring it to school for our P.E. sessions on Tuesday and Friday.
 3. Some of you have still to return your “walking” consent forms. Please ensure it is returned to school as soon as we return from our October break as we have an upcoming visit to the library. If you have not returned your form, you will not be unable to join us.
 4. We require 2 parent helpers to come with us to the library next Tuesday (1st November). We will be leaving school about 10.00 am and returning for break at 11.00am. If someone at home is able to help, please leave a message on the blog or bring a note in your diary letting me know.

Enjoy the remainder of the October break. I look forward to hearing all of your stories. See you on Monday.

Good evening everyone! I hope you have had a great weekend. We have been very lucky with the weather and hopefully it will continue for our upcoming holiday.

The last week of term has arrived …… and what a quick term it has been. I hope you have enjoyed it as much as I have.

There is no written homework this week due to it being a short week for you all. However, I would like you to complete some personal reading at home. It will be very good practice for the personal reading challenge you will be taking part in next term. I would like you to choose a book of your choice, preferably fiction, and read at least 3 chapters for Thursday. I will be checking in with you to see which book you have chosen and how much you have read.

I would also like you to look over the photographs posted this term with someone at home and leave a message on the blog. The message can be from you, someone at home or both. Let me know what you think of the activities we have been involved in this term. What have you enjoyed? What are you most proud of?

Here are your reminders for this week.

 1. If you haven’t already done so, please return your confirmation slip for our Parents’ Evenings this week.
 2. P.E. will be on Tuesday. We will have our final session of Scottish country dancing with P5H. P.E. kit is not required however you should have your trainers to change into.
 3. Please take your P.E. kit home to be washed over the holiday. This means it will be fresh for term 2.
 4. If you have a copy of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on DVD, please bring it in. Remember to check with someone at home before doing so.
 5. You will finish on Thursday at 3.15pm for the October break.

Enjoy the remainder of the weekend. See you all in the morning.

P5S – Personal Project Presentations

Image result for lion rampant shield

Over the last two days you have been presenting your Scottish Wars of Independence personal projects. For this task you were given the opportunity of presenting your research in any way you wished ………… and what wonderful ideas were on display!

We had models of the Wallace Monument, Stirling Bridge and a variety of castles, 3D maps, weapons and a very creative journey from Norway to Scotland. William Wallace in a kilt even appeared for a drama presentation. PowerPoints were created, posters were designed and research folders were produced. We even had a quiz to test everyone’s knowledge! Well done to each and every one of you. You certainly set the standards high.

Feedback for your presentations will be issued next week, from myself and one of your peers. Please remember to read your feedback carefully and act on it when you next present to the class.

Here are some photographs of you presenting and any models that were made.

We also took the time to look more closely at some of the models and their creators were able to discuss how they made them.

P5S – The Declaraton of Arbroath

Image result for lion rampant flag

During our topic session today we learned all about the Declaration of Arbroath and the importance it had on Scottish society.

After individually completing the note-taking aspect of the task, each clan had to recreate their own version of the declaration. Can you tell someone at home some of the facts you learned today? Wow them with your knowledge!

Here are a few photographs of you hard at work. Keep scrolling to see the completed declarations.

The completed declarations have turned out incredibly well. Throughout our topic you have created some very high quality work and I am looking forward to showing it all off at our parents’ evenings next week. Please ask your parents to have a look at all your wonderful work. I am a very proud teacher!

Have a look and let me know what you think.

The challenges set are for the 8 and 9 times tables and “Using Multiplication”.

P5 – Stirling Castle Trip

Image result for lion rampant flag

Today we had our trip to Stirling Castle. I was delighted to see so many of you were able to point out important landmarks from The Battle of Stirling Bridge. Well done!

We had a fun-filled day where we were able to investigate pretty much every area in, and outside, the castle. Exhibitions were visited, games were played, actors told us about different areas within the Great Hall and we even counted unicorns. What a busy day!

Please remember to tell someone at home all about our trip today. What new information did you learn?

A huge thank you to our parent helpers who came along today. It was greatly appreciated. Between us many, many photographs were taken. We got a little snap happy with the cameras as there were nearly 200 taken! Have a wee nosey!

P5S – The Battle of Bannockburn Presentations

Image result for lion rampant shield

Learning Outcome I can use my knowledge of a historical event in a creative way to clearly show my understanding of what happened.

Yesterday we learned all about the Battle of Bannockburn. Information for you to research was provided to give you an understanding of how the battle progressed and the important key figures involved.

To show your understanding you were asked to present the knowledge learned in a creative way of your choice. All clans decided to present in the form of a drama reenactment. Costumes and weapons were designed to create a more “authentic” version of the battle.

I have to say that the majority of the clans actually included a huge amount of accurate and relevant information within their drama presentation. Well done!

Primary 5 – Scottish Country Dancing

Image result for lion rampant shield

Our topic this week took us to the world of dance. The children were introduced to the wonders of the “Gay Gordons” dance. After their initial horror at having to dance with a boy or girl, everyone got right into the swing of things. We have some natural dancers within Primary 5.

We still have a few aspects of the dance to perfect, however both Mrs Hughes and I were very pleased at just how well everyone picked it up. Here’s hoping you all remember the steps for next week!

Here are a few action shots.

P5S – Homework w/b 27.9.16

tango face smile big by warszawianka - Smiley icon from Tango Project: http://tango.freedesktop.org/Tango_Desktop_Project

Tango Project icons are Public Domain.

Good evening everyone! I hope you have all had a wonderful holiday weekend so far. I am having a great time in Brazil however I will be back to see you all on Tuesday morning. Be ready for lots of stories (and maybe even some photographs)! Here is your homework for the coming week.

Spelling: Please complete List 13 or 20 in your spelling homework jotter. Each word should be written three times. A creative spelling activity, using ALL of your words should also be completed. Please try to complete a different activity from what you have previously done. This task should be returned to school by Friday.

Presentation of your work has been very good from the majority of you, please keep this high standard up. Well done!

Book Detectives: Due to our trip on Thursday, your Book Detectives homework is due for Wednesday. Please remember you have had two weeks to complete this task therefore you have had plenty of time to complete it to a high standard.

The reading of chapters 22-25 (inclusive) should be completed. Your summariser for these chapters should include information from ALL of them as this will show your understanding of what you have read. An illustration, with a written explanation, should also be completed. Please choose your favourite part to read aloud to your group members in class. If you are likely to forget the page number, write it down in your Book Detective jotter.

Maths: 3 challenges have been set up on Mangahigh for you to complete by Mrs Hughes. Please ensure you access each game and play to achieve the highest medal you can. I will be looking closely to the results when I return and those of you who have not been accessing the games while I have been away will be issued with worksheets to complete for the remainder of the term.

Please complete the challenges by Friday.

Topic: Your personal project should now be well under way. Please remember to ensure you use time to practice presenting your project. Ask someone at home to be your audience. Please keep referring to the task sheet to check on the criteria required. You may access the task sheet here .

Your topic should be completed and brought to school on Thursday 6th October.

Here are your reminders for this week.

 1. P.E. will be on Tuesday and Friday this week. Tuesday’s P.E. session will be with Primary 5H. You do not need shorts or a t-shirt, however you will need trainers. Please ensure you have a full kit (shorts, change of top ) for Friday’s session.
 2. Please remember to bring a packed lunch in a carrier bag on Thursday for our trip to Stirling Castle. This means we can dispose of the bag once we have eaten. School uniform should be worn. Spending money for the shop may be brought. Please do not bring more than £5.00.

See you all on Tuesday.
