Great News!

We have some fantastic news! We are really proud to announce that we have been reaccredited as a level 2 Rights Respecting School. A huge well done to the pupils, parents and staff that work so hard within our school community.

Outright campaign Video

Primary 5 were so inspired by our Outright campaign that they decided to create a video to help raise awareness of the child refugee crisis.

Primary 5 worked hard to create a campaign video linked to our Outright campaign; highlighting the problems faced by child refugees.  They want to encourage the UK Government to take action and ensuring refugee children get their rights.

Active : Article 10 – If you live in a different country than your parents do, you have the right to be together in the same place.

                  Article 22 – You have the right to special protection and help if you are a refugee (if you have been forced to leave your home and live in another country), as well as all the rights in this Convention.

 

Pupil Action Group Takeover!!!

Today at assembly our fabulous Pupil Action Group took over assembly duties from Mr Green and Mrs Thomson.  They organised a house assembly involving lots of singing, challenges and even celebrated the success of our wonderful star pupils.

Included : Article 1 – Everyone under 18 has these rights.

                       Article 31 – You have the right to play and rest.

 

Children in Need

Today Woodlands Primary School participated in a whole school and nursery activity day.   Children learned about specific rights and developed their skills while helping raise money for vulnerable children.

Children:

Explored helping others in a Hospital/kitchen. Through Pudsey is sick and food design challenge.

Identified a healthy meal through our Bear Picnic task.

Designed a teddy bear that can help children with different disabilities.

Considered what habitats bears needed to survive and linked this to children’s lives.

Took part in bear hunts answering riddles, counting and discussing the benefits li ked to regular exercise.

Used stop motion technology to create a moving bear and movie lined to promoting Children in Need.

Active:

Article 13 – You have the right to find out things and share what you think with others, by talking, drawing, writing or in any other

Article 23 – You have the right to special education and care if you have a disability, as well as all the rights in this Convention, so that you can live a full life.

Article 24 – You have the right to the best health care possible, safe water to drink, nutritious food, a clean and safe environment, and information to help you stay well.

Article 29 – Your education should help you use and develop your talents and abilities. It should also help you learn to live peacefully, protect the environment and respect other people.

Article 31 – You have the right to play and rest.

 

Taking Action – Letter Writing

Primary 7 decided to write letters to the Home secetary Amber Rudd. In these letters the boys and girls explained what they had been learning about during the Outright campaign.  They outlined what articles are important to the child refugees and have asked that the family reunification law in the UK be changed to help support these vulnerable children.

Thumbs up/Thumbs Down

Today at assembly we discussed the role of media and how it can influence our thoughts on certain groups in society.  We examined headlines linked to refugees and decided if we thought they were true or false.

Responsible : Article  17 –  We have the right to get information that is important to our well-being, from radio, newspaper,
books, computers and other sources. Adults should make sure that the information we are getting is not harmful, and will help us
find and understand the information we need.

What’s in a name?

During assemblies children have been learning about child refugees.  They can identify the difference between a refugee and a migrant and are able to share their feelings about this topic with others.

Know Your Rights Quiz

As pat of our Outright campaign the children participated in a Know Your Rights Quiz.  Children worked in groups discussing possible answers to questions linked to children’s rights.

Active : Article 42 – We know about our right to know our rights.  We like to share our knowledge of rights and help other to learn about them too.
