OUTSTANDING final solutions to our 2023 Advanced Higher Folios.
‘Are You Here?’ by Rachel Tierney
Rachel was inspired by Tom Mead’s painting ‘Working/Not Working’ (2019)

Recognition by Mead: he said, “Ahh thank you so much for sending these! That’s so fantastic to see, and she’s very talented! Such great motivation :)”.
‘My Healthcare Hero’ by Courtney Rehill
Courtney was inspired by Tim Okamura’s painting ‘Nurse Tracey’ (2021)

The Art & Design Team are in awe of this quality work – a huge well done for your creative commitment this year.
HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to LENA SURMA (S3) for winning the Glasgow Kelvin College Design Competition with her contemporary designs – based on forecasted fashion trends.

Lena’s garment description: “Men’s shirt and shorts with pattern inspired by wind turbines and the shadows they cast. Unique pointed style details taken from inspiration”.

Lena’s winning design was constructed by NC and Higher National Diploma Fashion students at Glasgow Kelvin College – her garment was the first to grace the catwalk on 18/05 and will be retained for showcase purposes in the upcoming year.

Showing their support: Olivia, Sawera and Jacob (S3) also attended the GKC Fashion Show 2023 – a terrific event.

Lena’s teacher Mrs. Boyle (who helped to coordinate this competition/event) and the Art & Design team are super proud of the creative talents across the THS Art & Design department.

Our photographers were busy creating Light Trails on Friday.
There was a lot of excitement in the studio as pupils experimented with Shutter Speed (S/Tv). Class 6E managed to produce various shapes (using torches on their phones) and capture font by painting with light.
Next, our photographers will be challenged to develop this work with coloured gels/torches.
What a buzz, well done all. Keep an eye out for other experimental images, yet to be posted…

Mrs Boyle, Mrs Devlin, Mr Costello and Mr Mullen joined the festive fun on Xmas Jumper Day.

The creative team are buzzing for the Christmas Fayre tonight too. Decorative trinkets will be on sale at the Art & Design stall – a lot of wonderful and unique designs created by our fantastic S1 – S3 pupils.
Mrs. Boyle and Mrs Devlin will manage our stall and are excited to chat with you all tonight. Looking forward to seeing you there!!

Fantastic work from our Higher Photographers who participated in the 30-Day Photography Challenge.
Pupils were challenged to make 1 photograph a day (using their phone or a DSLR camera) and consider their technical and compositional approach, when light travels through the lens.
Some options were:
Day 2: Changes to Come
Day 5: Archway
Day 15: Capture ‘The Weekend’
Day 19: Into the Night
Day 24: Recreate a Meme of your Choice.
Following this, pupils experienced their first mini exhibition by creating their own wall display in our design studio. Each pupil selected their top photograph (printed on gloss paper) from their overall shoot to put on display.
The wall is visually striking, well done. A variety of stunning compositions with a diverse range of colour palettes and subject matter.

S3 – S6 Artists and Photographers attended an inspiring talk by visiting Glasgow School of Art lecturers.
Pupils were introduced to the world of an Art Student, beyond high school; discovering what courses were available to study at GSA, exploring what GSA studios were like on campus and questioning how we “design for the future”.
Pupils were curious to know about the application process – asking questions around the portfolio requirements and the UCAS application.
Fantastic contribution everyone!
Artists can find further information about the application process through the attached link:

Our GSA talk explored (amongst other stuff) Product Design courses, Fine Art & Design courses, Fashion courses, Architecture courses and Student Exchange – again, further information can be found in the attached link or speak with your Art & Design teacher.
