FREE for a week! Useful app – help your child to read

Please see the following app which is free to download (for a week) and is suitable for children in the first stages of learning to read, or for older children who need a bit more practice.

Hi there,

Our Bafta-nominated Teach Your Monster to Read app is free for teachers to download on all app stores from Monday 24th September until Sunday 30th September 2018.

The game, developed by The Usborne Foundation, has now been played over 40 million times and helped over 4.5 million children learn to read!

The app includes all 3 of our games (over 16 hours of phonics learning). It has been designed in collaboration with leading academics at the University of Roehampton and complements all synthetic phonics programmes used in schools.

Download the app this week for free, plus there’s nothing to pay after the free period ends.

Hurry, the free period ends Sunday 30th September!

Enjoy!

P1 Trip – Kelvingrove Park

On Thursday 4th October 2018  the Primary 1 classes will visit Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum to take part in an Explore and Create Outdoors workshop in Kelvingrove Park. Using natural materials, and working in teams, the Primary 1 children will be constructing and creating whilst learning more about the wildlife in the park. There will also be time to visit the Museum.

The bus will leave school at 9:15am and return to school for 2:45pm.

A Snack to Go lunch will be provided for all pupils. If you prefer children can bring their own packed lunch. The children should bring their snack/packed lunch in a plastic bag, with their name written on the bag. They will not need to bring their school bag on this day.

As the workshop is an outdoor activity, children must be dressed for the weather – waterproof jacket, waterproof trousers (if you have them), welly boots and perhaps a hat and gloves depending on the temperature. School uniform should be worn under outdoor clothing.

The school will cover the cost of the bus and we are asking for £2 per child, to cover the cost of the workshop. Please send this in before the trip.

Learning to Play : Playing to Learn

The ‘Learning to Play : Playing to Learn’ programme is our own play-based learning programme, developed within St. Timothy’s. It is based on the growing research around play and child development. It offers the children regular opportunities to engage in a whole week of active play and learning. This will occur every 3/4 weeks, during revision weeks and the Primary 1 classrooms will be transformed into play zones to encourage creativity, imagination and exploration. Many of the resources for the programme have been provided by St. Timothy’s PTA.

The Play zones:

Room 1 – free flow play

Room 2 – numeracy and maths play

Room 3 – literacy play

Each day the children will visit all 3 playrooms with their class teacher and experience play activities to consolidate and develop their own learning.

This is an exciting new development so watch this space and look out for photos on Twitter.

Languageland in Primary 1

Languageland is a class based training package for Primary Schools to improve speech and language skills through through communication and games. There is evidence that when this approach is adopted Languageland improves children’s speech and language skills.

Normally these inputs are limited to a very small number of children but we have committed to delivering the full 6 week programme to all Primary 1 pupils. This will be delivered by Mr. Fawcett and will run alongside the Active Literacy Programme.
