Primary 1 Common word spelling activities

Here are some extra activities you could do at any time with our common words.

To do:

• read over all common words taught to date (each slide has the week that words were taught)

Other activities to do:

• have a go at writing them on scrap paper/ white board (if you have one)
  • you can make a whiteboard by putting a sheet of paper inside a plastic poly pocket
  • can you write them small?
  • can you write them big?
  • can you write them on different colours?
  • how many of the same word can you write (correctly) in 30 seconds/1 minute?
• spell them out aloud, then spell them out aloud without looking
• discuss the words
  • can it be sounded out or just have to be learned?
  • how many letters are in each word?
  • how many vowels?
  • how many consonants?
  • are there any digraph phonemes (sounds)?
  • do the contain any little words?
  • do they sound like other words we know
  • do they look a bit like other words we know i.e. dad and did
• can you find common words in books, magazines, newspapers?
