This week we have been working on some problems that involve addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Calculate the answers to these questions in your jotter.

a) Frank’s Fruit Store are running a special deal on melons…..

£5.76 for 6 melons or £7.52 for 8 melons

by working out the cost in each deal for one melon find out which deal is better.

b) Norah goes out with £20. She buys 2 engineering magazines for £4.24 each. How much change will she get?

c) With the money she gets in change how many melons can she buy from Frank?

d) The total cost for 9 people to go bowling was £70.65. By working out the cost for one person, how much would it cost for 4 people to go bowling?

e) Barry has been taking online yoga classes. The classes last 30 minutes and he pays £0.35 per minute. Is it better for Barry to pay by the minute or pay £30 for three classes?

Primary 6 – Tuesday 12th May

Good morning Primary 6,

I hope that you all had a lovely weekend.

This week we are going to work on some problems that involve addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Calculate the answers to these questions in your jotter.

Remember, decimals make no difference to how you add, subtract, multiply or divide you only have to remember to keep the decimal points above one another, in a straight line.

Mixed Problems

a) Sandra has been buying a lot of newspapers and magazines since the start of quarantine. She spends £7.58 on newspapers, £6.15 on puzzle magazines and £8.93 on celebrity gossip magazines every week. How much is she spending in total every week?

b) Could Sandra pay with a £20 note?

c) How much more is she spending on gossip than on news?

d) Her most expensive puzzle magazine is £1.99. If she stops buying it, how much will she be spending on puzzles?

e) Sandra stacks up her newspapers and magazines when she is finished reading them. Her stack is 2.7 cm tall every week. How tall will Sandra’s stack of newspapers and magazines be after 8 weeks?

f) The arm of Sandra’s couch is 42 cm high. How many weeks will it take for the stack to be taller than the arm of her couch?

g) When the stack of magazines reaches over the arm of Sandra’s couch how much money will she have spent?

After the Resurrection on Easter Sunday Jesus appeared to many people. One of those appearances is described in Luke’s Gospel.

On the Road to Emmaus

¹³That same day two of Jesus’ followers were going to a town named Emmaus. It is about seven miles from Jerusalem. ¹⁴They were talking about everything that had happened. ¹⁵While they were discussing these things, Jesus himself came near and began walking with them. ¹⁶(They were not allowed to recognise Jesus.) ¹⁷Then he said, “What are these things you are talking about while you walk?”

The two followers stopped. Their faces were very sad. ¹⁸The one named Cleopas answered, “You must be the only one in Jerusalem who does not know what just happened there.”

¹⁹Jesus said to them, “What are you talking about?”

The followers said, “It is about Jesus of Nazareth. He was a prophet from God to all the people. He said and did many powerful things. ²⁰Our leaders and the leading priests gave him up to be judged and killed. They nailed him to a cross. ²¹But we were hoping that he would free the Jews. It is now the third day since this happened. ²²And today some women among us told us some amazing things. Early this morning they went to the tomb, ²³but they did not find his body there. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels. The angels said that Jesus was alive! ²⁴So some of our group went to the tomb, too. They found it just as the women said, but they did not see Jesus.”

²⁵Then Jesus said to them, “You are foolish and slow to realise what is true. You should believe everything the prophets said. ²⁶They said that the Christ must suffer these things before he enters his glory.” ²⁷Then Jesus began to explain everything that had been written about himself in the Scriptures. He started with Moses, and then he talked about what all the prophets had said about him.

²⁸They came near the town of Emmaus, and Jesus acted as if he did not plan to stop there. ²⁹But they begged him, “Stay with us. It is late; it is almost night.” So he went in to stay with them.

³⁰Jesus sat down with them and took some bread. He gave thanks for the food and divided it. Then he gave it to them. ³¹And then, they were allowed to recognise Jesus. But when they saw who he was, he disappeared. ³²They said to each other, “When Jesus talked to us on the road, it felt like a fire burning in us. It was exciting when he explained the true meaning of the Scriptures.”

³³So the two followers got up at once and went back to Jerusalem. There they found the 11 apostles and others gathered. ³⁴They were saying, “The Lord really has risen from death! He showed himself to Simon.”

³⁵Then the two followers told what had happened on the road. They talked about how they recognised Jesus when he divided the bread.

Imagine that you were one of those followers of Jesus that he appeared to on the road to Emmaus. Write about your experience that day and how it changed you.
