Sumdog Tables Holiday Challenge - Sumdog

This week I would like your child to log onto Sumdog and play some games. This will be their first time logging into their account. I have provided each child with their login details and it would be good if you could store these details in a safe place. These details can be found inside the clear plastic zippy wallet.

Sumdog is a fantastic website which allows children to practise their maths skills through different games, which then become tailored to their ability following the answers they provide.

Thank you for all of the wonderful pictures that were sent in last week. It is great to see lots of the fabulous work you are doing at home. Remember, if you are really proud of your homework you can scan or take a picture of your wonderful work and send it to my email or tweet me a picture @St_BarbarasPS.

Your final day of Primary 1b

Good morning Superstars🌟

I can’t quite believe today is the last day of the school year, your final day in Primary 1. I have loved being your teacher, watching you grow and learn in your first year of primary school.

I know we are spending today a little bit differently to what I had planned and our time this year was cut short but we have had such an amazing time in those 7 months that we all got to spend together in class.

We have been on lots of learning adventures and you have continued to amaze me. I have loved singing and dancing with you and listening to all of your stories. We have had lots of laughs too. I have included a special video of your memories in Primary 1b at the bottom of this post. I hope you enjoy😀You are a very special bunch and I am so proud of you all🌟

Have an amazing summer! Good luck in P.2.

Take care and stay safe,

Miss McEleney🌈☀️❣️

Goodbye from Dippy!

Sumdog Competition

Sumdog have launched a new contest for North Lanarkshire primary schools.

It begins today, the 5th of June and will end on Thursday 11th June.

Last month our class finished in 35th place out of 316 classes. What an amazing achievement Primary 1b. Our Class Champion was Chloe! Amazing!

Let’s try and see if we can get higher up the leader board in this competition. I believe in you all, I know we can do it! Who will be crowned our Class Champion in this contest?

Remember, in order to qualify, we need a minimum of 10 people to take part in our class. 15 people in our class played last time which was amazing! Let’s try and see if we can get all 19 players this time. You can do it boys and girls.

Your Maths task for today is to log on to Sumdog and take part in this amazing contest.

Good luck! Take your time and give it your best shot Primary 1b. I am rooting for you all!

As today would have been our final First Friday Mass of the school year I would like you to follow Father Campbell’s mass at 10.00 am on Facebook (with an adult’s permission).

Remember to have your SSP (Special Sneaky Playtime).  Hopefully the sun will be shining. ☀️

Alyssa spotted lots of digital clocks around her house yesterday! Great work Alyssa!🌟

Matthew had lots of fun drawing around his little sister. Take a look at all of the body parts he was able to identify and label! This is amazing Matthew!🌟

Thumbs up for Holly!  She  has  written  super  sentences  and  remembered  her  core  writing  targets. Excellent  effort!🌟

🌟It’s now time for GOLDEN TIME. Have fun!🌟

You have completed another week of home learning boys and girls. Thank you for all your effort and hard work this week. I have really enjoyed reading emails, seeing pictures and watching video clips that you have all been sending me throughout the week. There has been lots of wonderful work going on at  home. It has been great to see your smiley faces again and hear some familiar voices.

Next week all of the teachers in St. Barbara’s will be returning to school to organise classrooms and learning for you all coming back in August.  There will be new updated grids for you to use from next week until the end of the term. R.E. and Health & Well Being activities will be posted on here.

Maths🔢

Yesterday you explored what you could do in one minute. How did you get on with your one minute challenges? Did you manage to beat your partner?

The Hour🕘

Lets think…

What can you do in one hour?

An hour is quite a long time but is tricky to estimate.

Today Sabrina is going to show you how one hour can be measured on a clock,  using the example of her football training from five o’clock to six o’clock.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zv4mvk7

Remember the shorter hand on the clock is the hour hand.

The hour hand takes one hour to move between one number and the next, while the minute hand moves right round the clock in the same time.

There are 60 minutes in one hour.

Now I would like you to think what you do in one hour?

Do you go to a club for an hour?

Does it take you an hour to take your dog a long walk?

O’Clock Task🕐

anoclockwords2

Digital Clocks

You have been learning all about the analogue clock.

Today I am going to introduce you to the digital clock.

We’re surrounded by digital clocks everywhere these days on mobiles, computers, TVs and alarm clocks.

This Is a Digital Clock | Digital Clock Song for Kids | Telling ...

Digital clocks use numbers to tell the time, instead of hands. It is usually battery or electricity powered.

Digital clocks are often smaller than analogue clocks as the numbers are easier to read.

Jack Hartmann wants to tell you more about the digital clock.

Digital Clock Hunt 🕵🏻‍♀️🕵️‍♂️

Today I would like you to go on a hunt around your house to see if you can spot any digital clocks.

You could take photographs of these and send me pictures of some of the clocks that you found on your clock hunt.  🕐

A parent in our class has very kindly emailed me a picture of this time poster that she bought and has been using with her child to help them learn about Time. She has found it very useful and kindly wanted to share this picture with  you, to see if it would help any other parents.

HWB🧘‍♂️🤸‍♀️🏊‍♂️⛹️‍♀️

We we’re talking yesterday about how important it is to look after our bodies. Drinking plenty especially during exercise and warm weather to keep us hydrated.  Our bodies are amazing things.

Here is a little activity to keep you busy and at the same time learn about all of the parts that make up ‘US’!!

Have you got a roll of wallpaper lying around or if you have been receiving lots of packages (did you know all our posties are busier than their busiest time of the year, Christmas!) during lockdown and have cardboard boxes around I want you to lie them flat on the ground and get someone in your house to draw round you.  (The weather’s not looking that good today but should be dry so even do this task outside)

Here we have our template!!  Can you label and identify as many parts of the human body, all the organs?  See if you can have a good guess at where they are located.  Our heart 💓 Should be easy, what about our lungs, liver etc.  Try to see how many you can find.  You could even put your artistic talents to good use and draw them in.

Remember to email your marvellous pictures to gw13mceleneylauren@glow.sch.uk or upload it onto Twitter with an adult’s permission.

R.E.🙏🏻

As we know things just now are very different from what we are used to.  By now our new Primary 1 children would have been in to visit the school but, like you, they have not been able to come in for their visits.  We are thinking that it would be a lovely idea for you to say a little prayer for them.  In order to make them feel welcome to our school in August, I would like you to choose the word for your stage below, write/colour it on a sheet of paper, hold it up and ask an adult to take a picture of you holding your word with a big smile and if it is possible you could wear your uniform.  Please email your picture to (gw13mceleneylauren@glow.sch.uk).  We will use these to make our Primary 1’s feel very welcome to our school.

A    Great   Big      Welcome     To     St.     Barbara’s!

Primary 1 – A; Primary 5 – Great; Primary 4 – Big; Primary 6 – Welcome; Primary 2 – To; PRIMARY 3 – St. (remember the dot); Primary 7 – Barbara’s!

Do you remember our Easter Message?

We still miss you lots!!

🌟Primary 1b’s Wall of Fame🌟

Aria-Rose has been practising her common words. Look at her super sentences! She has remembered capital letters, full stops and finger spaces. Well done Aria-Rose.

Aaron sent me a fabulous video of him reading his book. He has been working hard on his reading skills and it has really paid off. You are a Star Reader Aaron!

Chloe has been writing super sentences. She has been able to use lots of oo words. Can you spot them? Amazing work Chloe!

Guess what boys and girls?

Friday just called. She’ll be here tomorrow and she’s bringing golden time!🤭

Have a superb day Superstars!🤩

oo sound 👀👩‍🍳

Yesterday you learned the ‘oo’ sound.  Did you manage to think of lots of words that have this sound? Look at the pictures below, can  you guess each oo word?

Common Words: play, no, look

Ask your child to think of a strategy to help them spell each new common word correctly. Ask  them if they can sound out any of their new common words?

The only word that they can sound out this week is look. This word has this week’s phoneme in it, l-oo-k.

When we say the word no, the o says the letter name not the o sound so we cannot sound this word out.

Your child has not learned the ay sound yet so we treat play as a sight word.

Writing✍️

Once your child has written their sentences ask them to check that they have included their core writing targets.

Maths🔢

How long is a minute?🕘

Have you ever asked to do something and someone has replied ‘wait a minute‘ or ‘you can do it in a minute’? How long is a minute?

We can see one minute passing on the clock as the minute hand moves from one little line to the next, recognising that there are 60 little lines around the clock. There are 60 minutes in one hour.

Sabrina wants to enter a competition to rap the most words in one minute but is not sure how long this is. Watch the video clip below to learn more.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zmpc2sg

What can you do in a minute?🤷‍♀️

Can you be silent for one minute?

Today I would like you to explore what you can do in one minute.

You could use the one minute sand timer below to help you measure one minute:

Challenge🌶

Ask someone in your house to time you and see how many times you can do the following activities in one minute. After you finish, you could swap over and see if they could beat you.

Activities:

How many times can you write your name in one minute?

How many times can you touch your toes in one minute?

How many star jumps can you do in one minute?

How many times can you count up to ten in one minute?

How many different words can you write down in one minute?

What else can you do in one minute boys and girls?

I have set some time tasks for you to complete on Sumdog and Studyladder today.

We are going to follow a little Yoga session that Mrs McFall (Daniel and Luke’s mum) has kindly allowed us to share on the Blog.

Below is a great Yoga workout that you can do along with an adult or your siblings.  You can also have your favourite ted join in too.

Yoga is a great skill helping you learn the importance of how you breath which in turn helps us relax and sleep well.  (Parents: Mrs McFall recommends that you allow your child to go with the flow and, if you are able to accompany them doing the video, ask them similar questions).  Remember with any exercise we should remember to drink plenty to keep us hydrated, looking after our bodies!!

Once again a great big thank you to Mrs McFall and Luke. 👏👏

Over the course of the last few days we have been learning about the importance of Pentecost. It has shown us how important the feast is in the church’s year.

Good morning boys and girls🙋‍♀️

Welcome to a brand new month! Let’s hope the sunshine keeps up!☀️

This is the last month of your first year at primary school. I can’t believe how fast time has flown by, it seems like only yesterday that I was welcoming you into our class for the first time. I wish we could be spending this last month together but I am just so glad that you are all safe and well. I miss you lots but we have lots of amazing memories in Primary 1b to remember to keep us smiling!

I was working in the hub yesterday, it was great to see some familiar faces from our school. I hope you managed to enjoy the sunshine and complete some activities from your home learning grid.

We will begin our day as always, with our morning prayer.🙏🏻

Time ⏰

I can tell from the pictures I have been sent, that a lot of you have been enjoying learning about time.

Look at the amazing clocks Layla and Chloe created. Well done girls!

It is important that we can tell the time because we have to do lots of things at certain times of the day.

What time do you start school?

What time does school finish?

What time do you usually go to bed?

What time does Father Campbell stream mass live on a Sunday?

On Friday you were learning how to tell the time to the hour on the analogue clock. How did  you get on telling the time using o’clock?

Remember:

When the short hand points to a number, this tells us how many hours it is.

When the minute hand is pointing to 12, it is showing a full hour.
We call this time ‘o’clock’.

With the hot weather that hopefully we have all been enjoying we are going to look at ways to help us stay hydrated.  We know that we need to drink plenty of water and ensure we do that more frequently during hot days.

Another great way to enjoy the hot weather is with a lovely cool Slushie!!

Yum Yum.  Below there is a great recipe, with a little bit of science thrown in, that lets you make a slush with your hands!! Yip that is right you don’t need a fancy NutriBullet or a blender, just your hands.  So here goes :

Instructions to make a cool mouth-watering smoothie!!

  • Place one cup of your chosen juice into a small Ziploc bag and zip tight.
  • Place 4 cups of ice and half a cup of salt into a large Ziploc bag along with the juice bag and zip that tight too.
  • Shake the large bag over the sink or outside for 2-5 minutes or until the juice bag turns to slush.
  • Pour into a cup and enjoy!!

If you have your own recipe/method for making a Slushie please email this along with a picture of your Slushie to gw13mceleneylauren@glow.sch.uk or upload it onto Twitter with an adult’s permission.

The Feast of Pentecost is a very important celebration in the Church’s year and watching the short clip below will give you a snapshot of the importance of this great celebration.

The Feast of Pentecost is seen as the Birthday of the Church.

The Holy Spirit came to the disciples not only as a reminder that Jesus would always be with them but so that they received the strength and courage to continue to build God’s kingdom, not only in Jerusalem but to ensure it reached the ends of the earth.  In John’s Gospel on Sunday we heard not only about Jesus’ word but about Jesus’ action, “he breathed on them and said receive the Holy Spirit”.  Jesus’ breath gives new life, eternal life into the disciples, giving them the courage to go out and spread the word by being given special gifts. Jesus gave them the gift of speaking different languages to be able to carry out his work all over the world.

The Holy Spirit came to us in the Sacrament of Baptism and will or has come again to us in the  Sacrament of Confirmation.  Talk to an adult about your Baptism/Confirmation(if you have made it yet).  Think about all the wonderful gifts God has given us and give thanks to the Lord for all that we have to be glad of.  Just like the disciples we give thanks to the Lord of all the gifts he has given us.  We are so grateful to God for always being with us.
