Primary 2’s Fire Week

Week Beginning 29th February 2016

The focus for the Primary 2’s IDL topic this week was the fire service.

The children fun creating their own miniature fire truck and their own fire fighter badges. They loved using their badges during role play along with the costumes to pretend they were fire fighters. Some children, including Dylan and Demi, told me they wanted to see real fire engine so each pupil wrote a letter to the fire station to persuade them to bring their fire engine to school. They were very enthusiastic about doing this and are still hoping they wil get to see a real engine.

The children were very pleased on Friday when they were rewarded with a certificate to prove they know how to be safe from fire both at home and at school.

For homework pupils were to create their own fire hat. Thanks to the parents who took the time to make the hats, they were fantastic! The hats will be displayed for everyone to see. A brilliant effort by all.

Next week pupils will be focusing on the ambulance service. On Thursday 10th March, the infant area will get a visit from a paramedic.

People Who Help Us

Week beginning Monday 22nd February

This week that the boys and girls were introduced to their new topic of ‘People Who Help Us.’ They were all exctied to tell me things they already knew about the topic and different things they wanted to find out.

The children loved the role play corner. It has been set-up as a fire station and a hospial. Some were pretending to be fire fighters and others were pretending to be doctors. They loved getting the opportunity to play in the corner during lessons and during soft start in the morninng.

We had a station with playdough which the pupils enjoyed. They had to make the missing items on the cards to help the fire fighters, police and ambulance.

Each pupil made their bingo card with different emergencies on them. As a class we had fun playing a few games of bingo at the end of the lesson. The children were very pleased they were playing with the cards they had made themselves.

The boys and girls learned about when to dial 999. They were very enthusiastic about shouting the number out to me. They loved the video I showed about when to dial 999 and Abbie in particular was very keen to watch it for a second time.

Next week, the class will move on to looking at the fire service in more detail.
