Boxing Taster Sessions

It certainly was a busy day at Rochsolloch Primary School yesterday!

We were visited by Mark McGuinness, from Ecosse Boxing Club. Martin is a former Commonwealth boxing coach, and he joined us to share some of his expertise with our children.

After speaking to the whole school at assembly, Mark took some classes for individual sessions, where he taught the children about the sport and gave them a chance to try it out.

Airdrie Schools Cup

Yesterday, some of our P7 boys took part in the Airdrie Schools Cup football event, organised by Active Schools.

Our children enjoyed the experience, with every member of the squad getting plenty of game time! Following the event, medals were presented by some of the Airdrieonians football players – with one member of our team being particularly star-struck!

Look out for more about the event in the Airdrie and Coatbridge Advertiser.

P7 Outdoor Learning

As part of their topic on Scotland, P7 will be getting out into the great Scottish outdoors over the coming weeks, enjoying the Scottish weather and taking in the scenery.

This afternoon, the class worked in groups to create sun shelters using a limited selection of materials. Mr Innes was extremely impressed with the way the pupils collaborated and assigned roles to one another. Later in the term, the class will be building on this knowledge when they create ‘wild shelters’ in Brownsburn Local Nature Reserve – our favourite destination for outdoor learning!

Over the next four Tuesdays, our children will also be hiking, recording signs of animal life, and identifying and classifying insects and mini-beasts.

Boxersize!

At Rochsolloch Primary School, we always aim to provide our children with two hours of high-quality physical education every week. During their time at school, our pupils learn that taking part in exercise has both physical and mental health benefits. Yesterday afternoon, our pupils from P4-P7 took part in a boxercise taster session, with the team from Bannan Fitness Club.

The children had a great time working up a sweat as they completed their routines using the gloves and pads, medicine balls and steppers. Boxersise is a really high-energy activity, so the pupils were testing their stamina as well as their strength!

Not content to let the pupils have all the fun, our staff team took part in a session of our own at the end of the school day, with most of use making use of muscles we’d forgotten we had!

Rock On Rochsolloch!

Last night our pupils performed a wonderful rock concert in front of a jam-packed audience in New Wellwynd Church! Capping off the end of the Rookie Rockstars experience, our young rockers sang and danced their hearts out, amazing the crowd with their confidence and with the quality of their performance!

Take a look at the gallery and check out the fun our pupils had rocking out!

This really has been an amazing experience for our pupils, who have loved every minute of it.

Magnificent Netballers!

We would like to congratulate our school netball team on a very successful outing this morning! Our pupils visited Airdrie Academy to take part in a netball qualifying festival, where they competed in four matches – winning an amazing three of them!

The team will find out next week whether they have qualified for the next round of the competition, so our fingers are crossed!

Our after school netball club has been running for around a year now, and the pupils have worked very hard to improve their skills and knowledge of the game, alongside Miss Clerkson and Miss Allan.

I know the rest of the netball squad will be as proud of today’s team as their coaches are! Great job team!

Hands-On Learning in P2/3

At Rochsolloch Primary, we pride ourselves on bringing learning to life for our children. Our staff work hard to set learning in real life contexts, and to provide meaningful and engaging experiences for our pupils.

Take a look at some of the wonderful work that has been going on in P2/3 over the past couple of weeks!  In the gallery you can see the children baking Christmas cakes as part of an enterprise project, which has filled our infant wing with a sweet festive smell this week! You can also see the children working on their Sound Energy Interdisciplinary Learning topic: investigating sound caused by vibrations of air particles and experimenting with un-pitched percussion instruments.  Meanwhile, using pitched percussion, the children have also been learning to play Twinkle Twinkle and Jingle Bells on the Glockenspiel! Wow!

Big Chef, Little Chef

Over the past couple of weeks, our Nursery parents and children have been taking part in the ‘Big Chef, Little Chef’ project with Mrs Morrison.

The project involves parent and child cookery classes, where our family members work together as a team to create healthy recipes together.

The photos below show very clearly how much fun our chefs are having!

A Very Special Guest

We were visited today by a very special guest!

This month, our SHANARRI focus is ‘Achieving’ and to support our understanding of this concept, we were privileged to welcome Eilish McColgan to Rochsolloch Primary today.  Eilish is a Scottish record holder and British Champion distance runner.  She has also represented Scotland at 6 Commonwealth games, as well as Great Britain at 6 European Championships and 2 Olympic Games!

Eilish taught us a lot about hard work and dedication. She explained that although she loved running as a child, she didn’t win her first race until she was 18! Obviously her hard work paid off! Eilish encouraged our boys and girls to dream big and to never give up, which is a wonderfully positive message! Eilish also explained how taking part in sport was a great way to meet new people, and she showed us photos she had taken with two of the world’s most famous athletes: Usain Bolt and Mo Farah! Cool or what!?

We were delighted to welcome you into our school today Eilish, and we will be cheering for you at the next big competition!!!

Handball Taster

Today at our School Assembly, the pupils were introduced to our new SHANARRI focus of ‘Healthy,’ which we will be looking at in detail over the coming month.

Our pupils were treated to a ‘Handball Taster Session’ NL Leisure representatives Kevin and Russell. The children were taught about the sport of handball before some lucky pupils were given the chance to have a go!

There was an excited buzz in the gymhall as the teams competed to see who could complete the most passes. Even watching was exhausting!

Fairtrade Fruity Fun in P2/3

As part of a learning journey set in Africa, P2/3 have been learning about Fairtrade produce through their ‘Handa’s Surprise’ topic.  As you can see from the gallery, the pupils have been making fruit kebabs with chocolate, after learning how and where cocoa is grown.

The class also wrote to Cadbury’s to ask them about their chocolate making process.

Rio comes to Rochsolloch!

Today, P1-P7 took part in an Olympic-themed Potted Sports Day.  The children worked in House Teams, with each team representing a different Olympic Nation.  Some of the events the children were involved in were:

  • Hurdles
  • Basketball Dribble
  • Tennis
  • Rugby Shuttles
  • Obstacle Course
  • Golf Chipping
  • Team Relays

As a bit of fun for the pupils who had worked so hard, the event concluded with a Teachers’ Relay and Parents’ Obstacle Relay, much to the delight of the children.

We would like to thank all of the parents who came to cheer on the young athletes, as well as the children and staff who worked so hard to make the event a success.  We would also like to say a special thank you to Mr Griffin and P6 who have worked tirelessly to make our Sports Day a memorable one!  We’re already looking forward to next year’s!

Sports Day Fun in the Sun

The sight of the summer sun has been a welcome one over the past few weeks, and we were delighted that the sun shone on us again for the Nursery Class Sports Day this week.  Have a look through our photos and you can see just how much our children enjoyed the day, as well as how active they were!  It was wonderful to see so many adults come along to cheer on the children, and to join in the fun during the Mums’ Race and Dads’ Race!

The Sports Day allows our P6 pupils and Nursery Class children the chance to work together, strengthening bonds between our school pupils and our pre-school group before they come together as Buddies at the beginning of the new school session.

Mrs McCulloch would like to say an enormous thank you to Mr Griffin and P6 for organising and running the event, to the Nursery staff, to the visitors who came along to watch and of course, most importantly, to the children for giving it their all!

Mrs McCulloch would also like to thank John Wilson photography for taking the official photographs on the day, which will be added to the website in the near future.

What a great day!

Fun Football Festival

Recently, pupils from P6 and P7 took part in a Fun Football Festival at New Broomfield Stadium.  The children thoroughly enjoyed their day, playing great football and scoring plenty of goals along the way.

The sun even stayed out all day for them…what are the chances!?

Take a look at the pictures of Team Rochsolloch holding their participation medals.
