P6 and P6/7 Visit the City of Glasgow!

P6/7 and P6 had a very enjoyable and thought provoking trip to Glasgow. The trip was to visit the setting of our book Divided City and examine sectarianism in Glasgow. We attended a workshop run by St Mungo’s Museum- Glasgow A Sectarian City? We visited Glasgow Cathedral and the Necropolis. There were spectacular views over the city and we identified lots of Glasgow’s famous landmarks.

A Bridge Too Far!?

Friday 25th January saw a bridge bonanza day here at Rochsolloch.  Working with ICE (Institute of Civil Engineers) from BAM Nutall Scotland, pupils took part in ‘Bridges to Schools’ hands-on activity giving them the chance to build a 13m long cable stayed bridge. Having assembled the bridge they then walked across it, learning about bridges, teamwork and civil engineering as they went.  Pupils also engaged in using CAD software to design a bridge, worked collaboratively to build K-Nex bridges and investigated traditional methods when designing their own bridge.

It may have been icy outside but P6 and P7 pupils at Rochsolloch were making sure it was safety first!

Developing the Young Workforce

In preparation for life and our Careers Event on 23rd November, P7 & P6/7 have been taking a deeper look at potential careers and career paths.  They are developing their understanding of how skills that they learn across the curriculum are then transferred into the workplace.  A key resource to support their skills/qualities and careers has been www.myworldofwork/ican .

We are very much looking forward to our Careers Day on the 23rd!

SmartSTEM at Strathclyde Univeristy

P6 and P7 girls had the unique experience of attending a SmartSTEM event at Strathclyde University.  SmartSTEM provide equity of opportunity to young people into STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) with particular focus on the gender gap.  The girls experienced Plastic Cup Challenge, workshop based around product design, manufacture and teamwork, LED workshop and Social Media Content Creation workshop.  SmartSTEM interviewed those attending and this can be viewed in August on SmartSTEM TV.  Hopefully this event will inspired our pupils to go forward to select one of the STEM professions for their future careers.

Transition Playtime

On Tuesday, the boys and girls from our nursery class joined our P1s and P6s for a shared playtime as part of our transition programme!

The children enjoyed getting the chance to play in the school playground, and many of them had the opportunity to meet their buddies for next year! They also got a chance to get to know a few of our Rochsolloch teachers, so there will be plenty of friendly faces to greet them in August!

P7’s Sporty Raffle

Every year, our Parent Council donate £200 to our P7 pupils as part of an annual enterprise project.

Our P7s are then charged with coming up with an idea for how to make that money grow. The profits they make fund an end-of-year treat, which the children choose themselves.

This year, the P7 pupils from Mr Flanigan and Miss Duncan’s classes decided to hold a sporty raffle. £1 buys five tickets, with the lucky winner winning the wonderful prize shown below:

In addition to the raffle, our P7 pupils are also making delicious fruit sundaes which are being sold as a healthy snack option for pupils throughout the school. Fruit sundaes cost 70p.

P6/7 Japan Assembly

This morning, P6/7 presented an excellent assembly, all about Japan!

The assembly started and ended with some perfectly spoken Japanese, and included a magnificent Japanese karaoke version of ‘Let It Go’! That’s definitely a Rochsolloch Primary School first!

The audience were transfixed on our performers as they shared with us some of the wonderful learning that has been taking place in the class in recent weeks. P6/7 have truly covered the whole curriculum through this topic, investigating everything from sport to natural disasters – even making some delicious sushi!

The way the children presented their complex spoken lines was absolutely tremendous. They did themselves proud!

Thank you so much to all of our parents, grandparents and friends who turned out to help make this a great experience for our children. Thank you also to Mr Flanigan and Miss Findlay to preparing the children so well for this wonderful showcase!
