P6 and P6/7 Visit the City of Glasgow!

P6/7 and P6 had a very enjoyable and thought provoking trip to Glasgow. The trip was to visit the setting of our book Divided City and examine sectarianism in Glasgow. We attended a workshop run by St Mungo’s Museum- Glasgow A Sectarian City? We visited Glasgow Cathedral and the Necropolis. There were spectacular views over the city and we identified lots of Glasgow’s famous landmarks.

P5 and P5/6 Science Centre Visit!

P5 and P5/6 had an awesome time at the Glasgow Science Centre today!

P5 have been learning about How the World Works, while P5/6 have been learning about Space.

The children visited all three floors of the Science Mall for some hands-on fun, pictured below! The children also went to the Planetarium for an excellent Space presentation – there was so much learning happening!

Let’s not forget that the day was topped off by a trip to the Gift Shop – the most important aspect of any school trip!

Kilbowie Blog – Day 4

We’re midway through our last day here at Kilbowie, and we’ve got more than a few tired bodies in the building!

Having now completed all of their outdoor activities, our children are just polishing off a delicious chilli dinner. After dinner, the children will be clearing their rooms and sorting their equipment with their instructors before getting ready for the disco this evening!

It has been an absolutely terrific week, and the children will be desperate to share stories of their adventures and achievements with their families this weekend!

Tomorrow morning we’re hoping to be on the road by half past ten, and we’ll call the school with an ETA from our stop in Tyndrum.

Kilbowie Blog – Day 3

Well, we haven’t had quite as much sunshine in Oban today, but the wet weather hasn’t dampened the spirits of any of our children!

Several of our groups have been rock climbing this morning, with many of the children conquering their nerves and fear of heights to really push themselves! Everyone is working so hard to be as involved as possible in their activities, and we are extremely proud of how our pupils are representing our school here at Kilbowie!

There is a real happy buzz in the air as our children continue to mix well with their new friends and share stories of their favourite activities – gorge walking has been a big hit so far this week, with even the normally pristine Miss Duncan diving into the cold water for a swim!

Shortly our children will be returning from their afternoon activities to enjoy some steak pie or chicken burgers before getting back outside for an evening activity later on, come rain or shine!

Kilbowie Blog – Day 2

It’s another beautiful day in Oban and our children are just returning from their morning activities in time for lunch. Some of our children have been skiing in the sun, while others have been out canoeing or gorge walking. Everyone is having a great time so far, and everyone enjoyed a good sleep last night!

Tomorrow’s weather forecast isn’t so good so the teachers and children will be making the most of the sunshine today! We’ve planned to walk into Oban with the children after dinner for an ice cream. Yum!

Unfortunately we’re not able to upload our photographs to the Kilbowie computer – so you won’t get to watch us in action until the weekend!

Kilbowie Blog – Day 1

Our P7 children arrived safe and sound at Kilbowie today, and have been having a great time in the sunshine so far! The children have met with their group instructors and have been jumping into the sea! They’ve just finished some delicious chicken fajitas and are now enjoying an hour of free time before the evening activities begin!

We took some super photographs today, but unfortunately we’re having some trouble getting them online! Hopefully the problem will be resolved for tomorrow!

P7 Treat Week!

On Tuesday this week, our P7 pupils went Laser Tagging in Glasgow, with the money they made from their Fruit Sundae/Sports Raffle enterprise topic! They had even made enough money to have pizza delivered while they were there!

Last night, at New Wellwynd Church, the children got their gladrags on and met for their leavers’ disco, which included some delicious chip shop food. Thank goodness we had sports day this week to help us burn off some of those calories!

We’d like to say a huge thanks to the parents and staff who helped make these events possible – the children had a blast!

SmartSTEM at Strathclyde Univeristy

P6 and P7 girls had the unique experience of attending a SmartSTEM event at Strathclyde University.  SmartSTEM provide equity of opportunity to young people into STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) with particular focus on the gender gap.  The girls experienced Plastic Cup Challenge, workshop based around product design, manufacture and teamwork, LED workshop and Social Media Content Creation workshop.  SmartSTEM interviewed those attending and this can be viewed in August on SmartSTEM TV.  Hopefully this event will inspired our pupils to go forward to select one of the STEM professions for their future careers.

P3/4 and P4/5 Visit Five Sisters Zoo

Recently, P4/5 and P3/4 got together for a terrific educational excursion to the Five Sisters Zoo. The children were amazed to learn that many of the animals at the zoo have been rescued from performing in circuses.

Have a peek at our gallery to see the children enjoying seeing the animals, learning about minibeast identification, and enjoying a post-lunch play at the swing park!

P7 Inverlochy Scottish Outing

Yesterday, P7 Inverlochy headed out for the day – on an extended school trip! The class have been studying several aspects of modern Scottish life, as well as Scottish history. To celebrate the end of their studies, Miss Duncan organised a day out to visit the National Museum of Scotland, following by an afternoon receiving a guided tour of the Scottish Parliament.

The class split into small groups to explore the museum before enjoying a bite to eat and a tour of the gift shop. The afternoon was spent learning more about how the Scottish Parliament is run, while getting to enjoy some ‘behind the scenes’ access, denied to the general public – including a tour of the debating chamber! Check out the gallery to see how our day went! Museum photographs were taken by our talented children.

It really was an excellent day out, and our children were an absolute credit to our school in terms of their behaviour and the way they impressed their tour guides with their incredible knowledge of the Scottish Parliament!

P2/3 Riverside Museum Outing

As part of their ‘Travel and Transport’ class IDL topic, P2/3 headed into Glasgow yesterday to visit the Riverside Museum.

During the day, the children had the opportunity to become scientists, engineers, designers, and even inventors, as they looked and travel through the ages!

Mrs Hill received several compliments from members of the public about the outstanding behaviour of the boys and girls in the class – just what we like to hear P2/3!

Thank you to our parent helpers who helped ensure our children had a wonderful day out, enriching their learning in the process!

P5 and P5/6 Glasgow Gurdwara Visit

The following post was written by the pupils of P5:

P5 and P5/6 went to the Gurdwara on Wednesday morning last week with Mrs Munoz and Miss Rangeley. The children went to the Gurdwara to learn about Sikhism. Mr Singh and Mrs Kaur came to Rochsolloch Primary to teach the school about their religion. We decided to go so that we could find out more! We also thought that since Mr Singh and Mrs Kaur travelled to see us, we should travel to see them!

When we arrived we had to take off our shoes, put on turbans and wash our hands. People do this in the Gurdwara as a sign of respect to god.  We were taken upstairs and we were fortunate enough to hear some readings from the holy scriptures. We also learned a bit more about the ‘Five Ks’ of Sikhism and we had another shot of the musical instruments we got to play when Mr Singh and Mrs Kaur visited our class.

Our hosts were willing to share with us some traditional food including: spicy naan bread and mango juice, and our teachers were even given some vegetable pakora and chickpea curry!

We really enjoyed ourselves because we were made to feel very welcome and as you can see from the pictures we had a lot of fun! Thanks to Mrs Grimson and Mrs Lawrie for accompanying us on our trip!

A Day in the Capital

June is one of the busiest months in the calendar for our oldest pupils, and as part of their ‘Rights of the Child’ topic, P7 visited the Scottish Parliament at Holyrood today.

After a guided tour and interactive workshop, the class took part in a spot of impromptu hillwalking on Arthur’s Seat, making the most of Scotland’s now-famous beautiful summer weather.

“Best Class Trip Ever!”

P3 visited Amazonia this morning to round of their Outdoor Learning ‘Into the Wild’ topic.

The class explored the rainforest and were taught about the important role minibeasts play in keeping other animals alive!  The children were then given the chance to hold a variety of creepy crawlies, and they proved to be much braver than any of the adults, who seemed much happier taking pictures! Finally, the children were taught an interactive lesson about the layers of the rainforest before taking a trip to the gift shop before heading home.

On leaving the bus, many of the children were overheard saying that it had been “the best class trip ever!”  That’s what we like to hear, P3!

A Day out at The Kelpies

Last week, P5/6 and Miss Rangeley visited The Kelpies, as part of their Myths and Legends Interdisciplinary Learning Topic.  A grey day couldn’t dampen the children’s spirits, and you can see from the snaps it was a terrific day out!

This topic has been an engaging and memorable one for P5/6, and this visit was a superb way to round it all off!  Have a close look at some of the great artwork the class have produced during this study as well as the smiling faces of the pupils, clearly loving their day trip!

This is what we like to see P5/6!
