LIT 0-01a I enjoy exploring and playing with the patterns and sounds of language and can use what I learn.
HWB 0-01a I am aware of and able to express my feelings and am developing the ability to talk about them.
Wellbeing Indicator: RESPECTED
Our young learners have been exploring numbers all around them this week and are beginning to recognise and order numbers from 0-10. Some learners are already exploring and counting numbers beyond 10. The children have also been recalling and sharing numbers from their own personal worlds such as their house number, the numbers of the buses they use and the ages of people in their family.
Our learners have been identifying rhyming words such as ‘hat – cat’ and ‘ball – wall’. At gathering time, the children have been enjoying the rhyme, ‘Humpty Dumpty’, and have also been reinforcing their knowledge of the days of the week.
The children have been wearing ‘living our values’ stickers with pride. These are building our learners’ self-confidence and helping them make positive choices. They have also encouraged the children to think and talk about how their words and actions can affect others.
House Captains held a Smart School Council surgery on Thursday 6th February. The monthly surgery works alongside our suggestion box and gives Cathedral learners the opportunity to speak to House Captains about things they’d like to see change or improve in our school. Suggestions this month include getting more playground toys, getting more benches (which is already happening, due to our new outdoor theatre) and even giving staff toilets similar transformations to the ones just given to pupil toilets (what kind children we have!).
One of our recent Smart School Council projects has been improving pupil toilets in our four learning streets to make them more pleasant spaces to use. Learners across the school selected the paint colours and a team of pupils visited Dunelm in Uddingston to select accessories and finishing touches. The toilets were completed week beginning 3rd February and, as you can see, Cathedral learners are absolutely delighted with the great Cathedral toilet transformations!
Primary 1 and Primary 2 were the first Cathedral learners to make the short walk to Motherwell Heritage Centre on Wednesday 5th February for a workshop linked to our 150th anniversary. The parish school has been around for an incredible 150 years and the children had the opportunity to find out what daily life, education, industry and the town of Motherwell was like when our school opened in 1875. The Victorian toys and playground games were particularly popular with our young learners.
Cathedral excelled in the North Lanarkshire Active Schools Girls Football Festival at Braidhurst High School on Tuesday 4th February, winning all three of their matches! Results were as follows:
As part of our targeted family learning programme, Cathedral learners have the opportunity to attend our Monday homework club and even bring along a parent/carer to join in their learning. The club, which supports learners across the school, provides a warm, quiet space for pupils to complete their homework, have access to any learning resources they need and get expert help from our Attainment Team if they get stuck. Of course, there’s juice and a biscuit to stop any rumbling tummies and a cuppa for the grown-ups!
As part of Come Clubbing @ Cathedral, Primary 7 pupils recently completed Young Leaders training with our resident Active Schools Co-ordinator, Fiona Russell. The Young Leader Award is a great introduction to leadership, giving young people aged eleven and over the knowledge and skills to organise and lead small games and activities that can be used as a part of club sessions. Primary 7 engaged in a two-week training programme and were awarded certificates on completion of the module.
Good attendance makes a HUGE difference to your child’s progress and attainment. Every school day really does count!
February’s wellbeing indicator is RESPECTED. Please use the prompts below to talk to your child about this indicator. This will help them complete their wellbeing wheel in school.
Cathedral school community, alongside families and parishioners, gathered for a special Mass in the school hall on Friday 31st January, the Feast of St John Bosco, to formally mark the opening of the 150th anniversary year of our school and parish.
