Mavisbank School

School Community Links

As children, pupils at Mavisbank School are entitled to meet with other children and to join groups and organisations, as long as this does not stop other people from enjoying their rights.

This is outlined in the United Nations Convention Rights of the Child (UNCRC) Article 15 (freedom of association).

As a Rights Respecting School, we are committed to checking and ensuring all pupils have opportunities to have their rights met and that they are supported appropriately within these opportunities.

We have a wide range of links within our Learning Community that are highlighted below, across our website and our online platforms.

Café

Out with current Covid related restrictions, classes run a community café  every term. The pupils are involved in greeting visitors, offering tea, coffee and cakes, handling payments and showcasing their class work. The pupils love to meet new people, so a warm welcome will await you when we start back!

Local School Links

We have also created links with local primary schools, secondaries and colleges. Our students love interacting with people of their own age and can teach our visitors what it is like to have to cope with challenges every day and still try to get the best out of life. The local students tell us time and again how inspiring they find our pupils and, having gained work experience in our school, have gone on to work in a range of medical, caring or social professions.

Expressive Arts Week

Our pupils respond very well to learning experiences in music, drama and dance. We have an Expressive Arts week every March where we invite local schools and professional artistes to perform for and interact with our pupils.

Day to Make a Difference

Over the last five years, our community partners at Lloyds have been a great support to the school. During their numerous Days To Make A Difference, Lloyds have amongst many other tasks, re-invigorated our Sensory Garden, created indoor themed displays, produced and sold crafts, entertained us on the piano …and even dressed up as bumble bees (for a charitable donation of course!) It is always a highlight of our calendar to have the team in school and we look forward to restarting this again when it is safe to do so.
