Primary 6/7a Reflective Friday post

We have had a very busy start to our new term, We had a great video chat with Dawn Childs, a group engineering director at Merlin Entertainment, where we learned all about her job and asked lots of interesting questions. We also had a visit from the SSPCA and really enjoyed making our own robots. The Cardinal Newman science ambassadors came to use this month also and taught us all about air resistance. We all had the opportunity to make our own parachutes to protect an egg. Our class really enjoyed this.

In Maths we have been working reading both digital and analogue times as well as changing 12hr time to 24hr time and back again. We have also been calculating time duration and looking at the various units of time. If we could ask that a focus is given to this at home we would appreciate it as it would really help us to improve.  We have also been learning about length and measuring a variety of items using mm, cm and m. We will continue to work on these next month.

We started our new topic Natural disasters and all cannot wait to learn more about each of these extreme weather situations. So far we have learned a lot about Volcanoes and have investigated some very famous volcano eruptions. This allowed us to learn about the structure of the earth and how volcanoes are formed and erupt. Next we will be learning about earthquakes and how they occur.

We are looking forward to February and can’t wait to learn more.

P1/2 First Reflective Friday of 2019 (Mrs Stevenson/Mrs Byrne/Miss Stevens

LITERACY

P1/2   are back working as hard as ever after their Christmas and  New Year  Holiday. The children enjoyed their first Visit back to the Library and we  were able to walk this time as  it wasn’t quite so blustery as last time. Thank you again for the support of our  Parents/ Grandparents and Carers as their help, enabled us to do this.

The children have also been working hard on their writing and taught writing tasks.  They have  written recounts of  their Holidays, The visit from the S.S.P.C.A,  written Book Reports and have even written  Acrostic Poems for Robert Burns day.  Here are some of our star Writers.  (More to Come)

NUMERACY

In Math’s and Numeracy the  children have enjoyed their learning,  particularly through their Math’s Stations, enabling  them to consolidate and develop their learning in a  variety of ways, giving them  personalisation  and choice .

The children have also  continued to work on money and  enjoyed actively participating in their learning through the  stations but also through  song, I.C.T and group work  etc.

Using  ‘Number Talks’ / ‘Seal’  approaches  and  the resources to support and develop the children in their  learning, has also  engaged the children and  enable them to have fun with their learning.

HEALTH AND W ELLBEING  (H&WB)      –     ACTIVE

Dental Visits

The children of P1 met the Dentist to have their teeth counted this week and our Dental Nurse was very impressed  when the children of P1/2 demonstrated how efficiently and carefully they  cleaned their teeth, when she came in to visit them on Thursday.

P.E.

GYMNASTICS

Before  P1/2 begin learning about Gymnastics with Miss Stevens,  their first learning experience has been to revisit their learning about  ‘Safety’ and to put into place their own new safety rules,  (e.g. following instructions, lining up, turn taking,  moving from one piece of apparatus to the other etc.,)  as they actively participate in their Gymnastics lessons.

FOOTBALL

The children of P1 are really excited about having their on  Special Football Coach, to teach them some of the skills and  different techniques that can enable them to become successful  in this sport.  They had fun playing the games that support the learning of these skills and  they particularly enjoyed putting what  they have learned into practice when they played each other in a game of football at the end of their sessions.

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES  ICT

P1/2 also enjoyed exploring  the various tools on Tux Paint as they created Scottish flags for Burns Day with Miss Gallagher.

SOCIAL SCIENCES TOPIC – DINOSAURS

The children of P 1/2  are really excited about their ‘Dinosaur’ topic and with their teachers  have been discussing ‘What they already know ‘ and ‘What they would like to know’ so that together we can plan their learning .  They have already started to make their Dinosaur Cave and have lots of exciting learning ahead.  Watch this space for new pics!

EXPRESSIVE ARTS

ART

P1/2 have created terrific firework artwork as the learning about New Year Resolutions and how we celebrate New Year.

They also became inspired by our chilly weather as they designed their own fantastic snowmen pictures.

Reflective Friday January 2019 P6/7b

This month in maths we have been focusing on time and learning how to convert 12 hour time into 24 hour time and vice versa. In French we have learned about the weather and colours.  On Fridays, Cardinal Newman High School sports leaders have been coming to do P.E. with us and we are now learning skills in either netball, rugby or athletics . Cardinal Newman Science ambassadors have been in class too helping us learn about friction and air resistance.

We also got to question Dawn Childs in a live video conference, Dawn is Group Engineering Director at Merlin Entertainment. This was part of the Primary Engineering Young Leaders Award where we have to interview engineers as part of the award. This also helps us to see the jobs available to us when we are older.

We had super fun when the SSPCA came to visit us with their new robotic animals which we had to build and use code to move them around. We also played board games which helped us learn more about animals.

We have started our natural disasters topic and at present we are all busy making presentations on The Ring of Fire.

In literacy we are still trying out our paired spelling in order to help our spelling skills and have recently looked at the features of a newspaper report.

Our peer mediators did a small role play scenario at assembly to show everyone how it can benefit our school. Our rota is now up and running.

P4/5 Reflective Friday post

We have been given a huge responsibility in our class: a hatchery to take care of and prepare for our new arrivals, the brown trout eggs. We have been working hard to keep the water clean and cold.

However, it’s not all hard work in P4/5. We learned a bit about Robert Burns today as it’s his birthday. We learned what the song Auld Lang Syne is about and we sang it together while joining hands, just like we do at Hogmanay!

Reflective Friday Primary 5/6

What a busy New Year we have had in Primary 5/6 and we actually surprised ourselves with how much we have achieved in this short space of time.  We created a list but are only going to share a few things as we don’t like to show off!

Our new IDL topic is Global Goals which we had little knowledge of but after some research time we know that there are 17 goals and we will study each one.  We created posters to highlight the importance of each goal.

In literacy we all have new reading books/novels and we are developing our reading strategies.  One novel is called ‘Tilly and the Badgers’ and we are learning about badger baiting.  This has given a great opportunity to talk about the facts and opinions of the subject.

We started our year in Health and Wellbeing and Thinking Circles looking at what we are thankful for and what we should aim to do more of.  It was a great dusting of our minds and promoted meaningful growth mind set.

As we are a composite class our P6 peers have been able to share their experience of Cardinal Newman transition.  They love the Science Ambassadors and the Sports Champions and we enjoy hearing about the learning.  We are fortunate their learning on friction has enhanced our science topic on floating and sinking although we do have an idea for a home project so be aware parents and carers!

The best fun is martial arts every Tuesday were Kasia puts everyone through their paces and we all need to keep our guard up.  She promotes active fitness and skill in a specialised area. We laugh at Mrs Gardner as she tries our lessons out on her family but we really enjoy Magic Mixer.  It has improved our thinking in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division but we time it so it is quite competitive.

Most of all we have aimed to improve our classroom environment and routine to ensure we have variety.  We hope you liked our twitter picture of a ‘Starry Night’ by Vincent Van Gogh.

Happy Robert Burns Day one and all!

Clyde in the Classroom – Trout Eggs

We are so excited about getting fish eggs to look after in P4/5! We chose a good spot for them, near a socket but far from radiators, and Clyde in the Classroom delivered our hatchery on Friday so we can start taking practising taking care of the eggs before they are delivered next Monday! We have lots of water bottles in the freezer to make big ice packs but could do with some more, please, so any empty screw-cap bottles of water, please please sent them our way!  Thanks!

Christmas Wreath and Jesse Tree

The children enjoyed making their Christmas Wreath and Jesse Tree.  They also enjoyed learning about the candles on their wreath and symbols on their Tree and what they represent. (More pics to come)

Library Visit

P1/2 had a fantastic second visit to the Library. Where they got to return their books hear some exciting Christmas stories and choose their new books.

The children were so pleased they were able to go, as the weather forecast wasn’t good enough for the children to be able to walk there. However Mrs Dillon/Mrs Crawford saved the day and was able to order a bus for P1/2 to take them there and back.  Thank you very much.   They had a lovely time.  Thank you also to all our wonderful helpers who helped to make this visit possible.

Christmas Experiences

P 1/2 have  also been enjoying writing about the different experiences they have been having throughout the Christmas season.  In particular they got really excited about writing to  to tell Santa that they are trying hard to be very good and perhaps if he was not too busy he would like to know one or too of the gifts they would like for Christmas.

Thank you to Barbara and Tesco  –                                                                    Developing the Young Workforce and People Who Help Us

The children  also enjoyed writing back to Barbara from Tesco, to thank her for the wonderful experience they had, to help them in their learning about ‘Developing the Young Workforce’ and ‘People who help  Us.’

Below you can see some of the letters and pictures the children sent.

P1/2  Christmas Jumpers and Fundraising

During the season of Advent, Holy Family have been raising funds for charity one of the special days our P1/2 class particularly enjoyed was ‘Christmas Jumper Day’  where many of our children   shared their snack money, or  brought in contributions especially.  Also a big thank you to all who have supported our children and school in this way.  We appreciate it very much.
