Reflective Friday September 2020

This has been a very busy time in Primary 3 as we began the new term after a long break from school.  The children have been working hard to learn the new one way system and also learning to keep themselves and others safe by washing and sanitising their hands.

Our priorities have been Literacy, Numeracy and Heath and Well-Being with the children revising aspects of all areas in class and for homework.

We have been spending lots of time outdoors doing our Daily Mile and participating in outdoor games.  We are still operating our indoor and outdoor bubble system to keep your children as safe as we can.

In literacy. we have been revising all of the phonemes taught to date as well as focussing on proper letter formation.  You can really help by encouraging your child to write letters the correct way when completing homework tasks.

In maths, we have been counting on and counting backwards as well as learning our days and months.  The children know songs that they can share with you and you can help them learn them well by asking each day what the day, date is and asking questions such as, “What day will it be tomorrow, what day was it yesterday.

Could I please ask you to try and listen to your child read each night, check to see if they can read/write their common words and play counting games with them.

Primary 7 Reflective Friday September 2020

Primary 7 are enjoying being back at school and are very much enjoying being “top of the school.”  The children are obviously disappointed that they can’t work with their buddies in the usual way, but we have been looking at inventive ways we can get around this. The children have already sent a Welcome to Holy Family poster to their buddy with a note and we are looking forward to hopefully having a virtual link up with the P1s very soon.

We are currently reading Divided City by Theresa Breslin as a class novel. The children are all really gripped by the book and enjoying the story and the many themes it covers. It is so lovely to see each and every child so engrossed in a book.

In numeracy we have been revising rounding, estimating and place value and we are now focusing on addition and subtraction with numbers to 1 000 000.  We will move on to work on multiplication and division.

The children are also enjoying a Health and Well being focus and this month we have been thinking about how we can stay safe, especially during the pandemic. We have written instructions to show anyone how to stick to our new school safety rules and designed posters to promote this too. We are looking forward to continuing with our outdoor PE even as the weather gets a little colder.

The children have really enjoyed looking at Scottish Inventors. We have been researching the lives of famous inventors as well as imagining what it would have been like when these inventions were first discovered by creating newspaper articles and diary entries. Most of all the children have loved creating their own invention and writing a persuasive piece to encourage others to buy it.

In RE we have been looking at the liturgical year and reminding ourselves of the special times in our church year and the colours that symbolise each one. We spent some time thinking about Mary and why she is so special and will continue to do this in the month of October. We are also learning about Luke’s Gospel.

Finally the highlight of the month has to be the election of our new House Captains. All of the children worked really have to complete their application and the short listed candidates all produced really interesting speeches. I think those voting must have had a very difficult decision to make. Congratulations to Ava, Sophia, Shannon and Alfie.

The children have made me feel very welcome at Holy Family and we are looking forward to what October brings.

Primary 6 Reflective Friday

Welcome to Primary 6 and our first Reflective Friday post. We are all excited and happy to be back at school even thou it is different to what we remember. Since we have come back we had to learn about our new rules and routines, it was hard trying to remember our one way systems, our Zones and bubbles but after a few days we got there. First Friday Mass has been different for us as we are unable to go, however due to technology we have been lucky to watch it live in our classroom which makes us still feel included.

We have been talking about our emotions and feels a lot since we have come back to school and emotion works have helped us understand these emotions. During class we have been working on our class novel The Queens Nose which we all enjoyed. Our new novel is called Tribe by Catherine MacPhail which we started this week in class. We are already gripped by the new novel and enjoying the main themes it already covers. In Maths we have already covered Place Value, Rounding and estimating and currently on Addition/ Subtraction. Our mental agility is improving everyday as we work through our Number Talks. Our new Topic is Scottish Inventors and Inventions which we are really enjoying, especially how Scotland has helped create and shape the world we living today and how the inventions was created so long ago but we still use them today. We did have suggestions about creating our own from new games, flying boards to even finding a vaccine for Covid- 19. Primary 6 also started Science last week which takes a deeper look into our Solar System, which have been researching facts and information about each planet including our own planet Earth. We have still managed to do Art in class and looking at various artists including Vincent Van Gogh. We are looking at how he used his emotions through colours to create his paintings, which even inspired us to use happy colours to create our own replica painting of Sunflowers.

Primary 6 still all had the chance to write application forms for Vice captains for each house, everyone took part in this and a few where selected by Mrs Willison. On Thursday the 10th Sep P4-7 got a chance to watch our campaign videos and vote for their vice-captain.

After the September weekend we have a lot more planned with ICT, PE, Spanish and Heath and Wellbeing. Miss Verrecchia is going to try and included as much as possible in our timetable to make sure we are slowly getting back to the new normal. We are all still excited for this year and to make Primary 6 the best year yet.

Thank you from all of Primary 6.

Remote Learning Arrangements

Remote Learning Arrangements

Please note that if your child has to self isolate due to possible or confirmed infection or as a result of quarantine then contact us at school on 01698 274967 or email ht@holyfamily.n-lanark.sch.uk to let us know.

In the case of individual absences learning packs will be provided but where a large number of children are affected eg. a full class we will revert to remote learning for these pupils using the model created during lockdown March – June 2020.

All classes have now had Microsoft teams created by their teacher and the website has been updated to reflect our new classes. It is here you would locate tasks under your class tab on a daily/weekly basis if required.

Update on return to school in Holy Family Primary

Following the update from North  Lanarkshire Council regarding schools return for the new session I have revised our planned return model to incorporate Scottish government and local authority advice. As always this is subject to change should government advice alter. I am meeting with the parent council tomorrow night  and I wanted to share my planning with you all prior to that to allow for any subsequent questions.

I have tried to make as few changes as possible to the recovery planning outlined in June and have also included again the playground and building diagrams you saw then to refresh everyone’s memory.

I know many of you will be feeling nervous about this move to full time schooling and I want to reassure you that we are well prepared to meet the challenges that lie ahead. Our risk assessment for full return is also incuded in this post.

We are all looking forward to welcoming the children back next week and working with you and the local community again albeit at a social distance. Until then please contact me at my email address if you have any issues you would like to discuss.

North Lanarkshire Council Schools Update 23.6.20

Today’s announcement from the Scottish Government outlines the plan to reopen all schools on a full time basis from August.

We are currently considering the practicalities and implications of this announcement and will await further clarification and guidance from government, particularly in relation to public health and scientific advice.

Our priority is the safety of our pupils and staff across our network of primary, secondary and ASN schools, as well as our early learning and childcare settings.

We understand that you will have questions, and as this news was only announced today, we will make further information available on how this impacts on our schools and facilities in the coming days.

We are preparing for pupils to return full-time to school on 12 August and we will be working closely with our schools and partners, including our early years and childcare provision to establish our plans, which we will communicate as soon as we are in a position to.

Head of Education (North)

Mrs Wilson Update Week Beginning 22.6.20

Welcome to my final weekly update of session  2019/2020. I want to take this opportunity to thank all our families for the support they have given the school by working in partnership with us over these last few difficult months. Your feed back in our questionnaire in particular has been vital in planning effectively for the children in a way that also meets your needs as working adults. I know how challenging remote learning is and the strain of juggling home schooling with the demands of your own workload can only add to that so thank you for your commitment and support.

Moving forward in the new session as you know your child will have a minimum of 2 days face to face class teaching but hopefully this will only be a temporary measure if the covid 19 threat continues to reduce.

We have managed to accommodate sibling groups and linked in with the nursery too to create a similar pattern of days. The groupings were also planned to take into account working groups and allow for high quality, ability focused teaching while meeting the class size restrictions based on the 2 metre rule. As a result the days your child has been allocated are not open to change. While I appreciate this may be challenging the capacity of the classrooms does not allow us to accommodate more than 50% so I would physically not have space to change the allocated days.

READING CHALLENGE

I have been contacted by NLC with details of the summer reading challenge in a new format.

This year, the national Summer Reading Challenge is online!  Silly Squad was launched last Friday, with a host of authors and celebrities helping to promote this to families all over the UK.

Alongside this, Culture NL Libraries are hosting a ‘Silly Staycation’ with our local celebrity, panto favourite Sheepie fronting our summer campaign; check it out here!

Follow the links to get the kids signed up for a Silly Staycation!

CASH PAYMENTS

From August, cash can no longer be accepted in schools and parents/carers will be asked to use cards via the online payment system to pay for things like school lunches etc.  Children will not be able to bring cash into school to top up their lunch cards.  North Lanarkshire Council will be in touch nearer the time to notify parents of this and will advise them to use the online payment system.
