Primary 6 September update

We have now well and truly settled back into our school routine and we are enjoying being in the senior section of the school.

Our class in Harry Potter themed this year and in line with this as our model study novel we have been reading Harry Potter and the philosophers stone. We have been working together to fully understand this novel and developing our knowledge of the comprehension strategies. We have also been focusing on spelling strategies weekly and will continue to do so for the rest of the school year.

In writing we have successfully submitted our vice-captain applications to Mrs Harley where she picked a few of us to go through to the final round of speeches! From there, we have been linking our taught writing to our STEM lessons such as producing an information report on adaptation and biodiversity.
In Maths Mrs Anderson has been focusing on number and place value to make sure we fully understand the link between a digit and its place. We will be extending this knowledge to include decimals in the coming weeks.  Miss Gallagher had been focusing on measuring the perimeter of 2D shapes as well as calculating the area of these shapes.
In RE we have been looking at other world religions in the form of Islam and have compared it to our own religion. We have also learned about Moses and will now be focusing on Mary as it is the month of the Holy Rosary.
For our IDL topic this term, we have focused in on Harry Potter and how the film and books were developed this is leading us on to a media study where we will look at how films are developed leading us on to creating our own short films later in the term.
We have lots to look forward to in the coming months!

P4 February Learning Update

In February, Primary 4 welcomed back Mrs Cooney. The children have all worked so hard learning all about Shape and Tessellation in maths. They had some hands-on investigation as discovered that squares, rectangles, triangles and hexagons tile really well with each other as you can see in these stamper pictures:

They also looked at tiling with more than one shape and came up with some beautiful patterns that all the teachers would love to have in their bathrooms for sure! Some are here:

It is now Lent so we do something a bit different every Friday in the lead up to Easter to raise food and money for the food bank and our Lenten charities. Recently we had Odd Sock day and wore our most unusual socks:

It hasn’t all been silly socks, though. The children have been working very hard on Writing and concentrating on the Recount genre. We planned a piece together all about a typical week in Primary 4 and here you can see the plan and then a link to the finished piece. Top contributors earned Star Writer status – well done!

P4 group recount

Our First Holy Communicants are preparing to make their Sacrament very soon. Mrs Daisley is helping to guide them in this as are their parents at home and for this we are very grateful. Thank you to all parents who are helping with homework and extra research projects as part of our topic on Scottish Inventors, too.

Primary 7a January update

It was so lovely to have all of the children back after the Christmas break. All ready and refreshed to begin their last few months as Holy Family pupils.

We have been incredibly busy in Primary 7a this month and have lots to look forward to for the rest of the year.  We are also very lucky to have Miss Walker joining us for 5 weeks. She will leave us at the end of February but she has lots of fun planned for us for the next few weeks.

Literacy

In literacy we are all working on the novel ‘Goodnight Mister Tom’.  The children are loving this book so far and are doing really well to keep up with the reading that I have assigned for them to do at home. If any are struggling, I have suggested audible or you tube to listen to the book being read and they can read along as sometimes reading a lot all at once can be a lot for some children.

Numeracy

In numeracy we covered negative numbers, the children have learned this very quickly and are able to use them in a variety of contexts. We have since moved on to Time, which again the class have demonstrated a great knowledge of which I am extremely impressed with.  If you could reinforce the reading of timetables at home such as tv schedules, train and bus time tables this would be greatly appreciated.

Health and Wellbeing

Our PE days are currently on a Tuesday and a Thursday, this month we have been focusing on hockey on a Tuesday with Miss Walker which has been really fun. On a Thursday we have been working together with primary 7b and have being focusing on fitness keeping up with the healthy new year resolutions.

Topic

Our class novel ‘Goodnight Mister Tom’ is directly linked to our topic this term which is World War 2. The children are loving this already and have learned lots about how the war began and about the leaders of the countries involved. We will be focusing on the British front before moving on the the German perspective. I am sure the children will love this.

T.I.O.F

In RE we have had a focus on the beatitudes and have learned about some missionaries. The children have really enjoyed this and it has led really well on to their preparation for their Confirmation which will take place in April. We have started the booklet to help them to prepare and in line with this they will have home activities to complete with you at home. I am aiming to have a majority of these completed before Easter break and the children will be given notice of when the next one is due.

We are looking forward to what February brings for our class.

Primary 7a November update!

Primary 7a have been working really hard in the past month!

They have been continuing to read their class novel ‘Divided City’ and are really enjoying looking at the different themes and ideas that this book explores.

In Maths we have been working hard on our times tables and learning to use them in different ways. They should be encouraged to practise these at home as much as they can. The class have really challenged themselves to try more complex math problems involving their times tables and have learned how to use the lattice method to solve multiplying digits with more than one number.

In Health and wellbeing we have been exploring substance misuse and the class have worked really hard to learn about the negative impact that substances can have on their bodies. They were really shocked to hear some of the facts behind smoking and drinking alcohol. I am sure they be happy to share some of what they have learned with you at home.

We have been learning about the lives of some Saints this month as our focus has been the month of All Saints and we have enjoyed learning about how they have became Saints and how they lived their lives.

We are really looking forward to the month of December and all the fun activities we will have during this time!
