P3 Baking – Yummy Scones! (Part 2)

The last two groups from P3 got their chance to show off their baking skills on Monday 3rd June.  They made delicious butternut squash and thyme scones.  They worked hard at greasing the baking trays, rubbing the butter into the flour, stirring in all the ingredients without making too much mess.  Then came the fun bit rolling out the flour and patting the dough into scone shapes.

Everyone was fantastic at cleaning and washing up as well as remembering all the safety rules!  We all look forward to getting more opportunities in the learning kitchen next year.

Thanks very much to Mrs Kelly and Mrs McCluskey for all your help,  we couldn’t have done it without you!

P2/3 in the Learning Kitchen

P2/3 shared their ideas for their favourite sandwich.  You will not be surprised to hear that ‘chocolate spread’ was very popular!  As we are a Health Promoting School though, pupils came up with alternatives such as banana sandwiches, jam, ham and cheese.  Everyone had to spread and/or cut their ingredients and then enjoy eating them.   On our second visit to the Learning Kitchen last week, a number of pupils decided to be ‘extra healthy’ and add some salad to their sandwiches.  Please have a look at the photograph gallery below.  Someone has been very adventurous and made a jam and banana sandwich with tomatoes!  Can you see who it is?

Primary 1a and 1b grow it, cook it, eat it!

Primary 1a and 1b have been growing some watercress in class and last week we took our watercress into the Learning Kitchen. We had great fun preparing a delicious watercress and apple salad and learned some safe food chopping techniques while doing so! Well done for working so hard and keeping safe and clean in the kitchen.   🙂

Thank you Ms Duncan, Mrs McCluskey and Mrs Kelly for helping us with our learning.

Miss Scott will take the remaining primary 1 children into the Learning Kitchen next week.

P6/7 and P7 School Excursions to Dumfries House

P7 visit Dumfries House on 1 June and P6/7 the following week on 8 June.

Parents, could you ensure that all pupils meet in the school hall at 8.45am on the morning of their excursion please? This helps us to get the pupils on the road and to the venue as quickly as possible.

Pupils will be participating in outdoor learning including gardening, cooking and play so could you also ensure that pupils please wear appropriate outdoor clothing on this day?

Thanks in advance!

P2/3 Rainbow Salad

P2/3 were in the Learning Kitchen this week and enjoyed working with the colourful vegetables that can be used in a salad.  They used a cutting technique called ‘the claw’ to help them cut their vegetables safely.  As well as learning to cut safely, this experience gave children the opportunity to taste the different vegetables.  To make this fun, each child made their own colourful, rainbow salad face and then with a little mayo, they started to crunch away.  If you like eating nachos and dipping them into salsa, why don’t you add a few crunchy vegetables to dip?

P2/3 Visit to Dumfries House

P2/3 had a fabulous time when they visited Dumfries House in March.  They were exploring what plants  needed to grow and how to recycle some food waste by making a compost bottle.  The grounds of Dumfries House are quite spectacular and would be a great place to explore the outdoors with your family.  There is a great adventure play park too.  Here are some photographs to show you what fun we had.

P2 Visit Dumfries House

Back in March P2 visited Dumfries House. We had a great day learning to chop vegetables and make potato salad in the lovely learning kitchen. We all did really well trying some new food. We then went to the vegetable garden, paired up and completed a scavenger hunt. After eating our packed lunches in the farmhouse, we then took advantage of the lovely weather and had lots of fun in the adventure playground. A great day was had by all.

Mrs Inglis

P2 Welcome Germbuster!

P2 enjoyed their visit from the Germbuster. She talked to us about where germs are found and what they can do to us. She explained that there are some good germs as well as bad ones. We learned the importance of washing our hands and when we should do this. Germbuster had special glasses that could see germs. We really enjoyed using the Glitterbug lotion to see the germs on our hands under the special light. We then washed our hands thoroughly and looked at them again. Even Mrs Inglis had a turn – hers had lots of germs too!! Luckily we got rid of most of the germs on our hands when we washed them.

Thank you to MrsMcIntyre, aka Germbuster.
