PE DEPARTMENT

Huge congratulations to the S1 Football Team who managed to finish off their season by winning the Lanarkshire League Final. Fantastic performance and result, beating Cardinal Newman 5-1 to claim the trophy. Well done to all 26 boys who have been part of the squad throughout the entire season.

Massive Congratulations to Amy Kennedy in S6 who has been invited to compete for Scotland at the Loughborough International Athletics Meet this weekend, which will be her first senior vest. Amy has been an age group athlete for some time and involved in GB development squads, so it is a massive achievement and honour to be selected as a full senior athlete at this level.

READ FOR REFUGEES SUNFLOWER READING CHALLENGE

The sunflower challenge is inspired by the national flower of Ukraine. You are encouraged to participate in the UK Read for Refugees Sunflower Challenge.

After ten million Ukrainians have had to leave their homes, we are asking students to take part in a sponsored read to raise money for the United Nations Refugee Agency which provides emergency assistance for refugees worldwide.

Students could ask for donations from friends and family per page, chapter, or book read; by hours spent reading; or simply for a flat donation to support their involvement.

All donations, no matter what the amount, will support the work of the Refugee Agency. All sponsors can donate directly on the project’s Just Giving page https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/sunflower-challenge

If you would like to take part and be involved in raising funds for refugees worldwide and also be in with a chance to win some great prizes, both nationally and in school, please collect a sponsor sheet from the librarian. For more information and to enter the national competitions go to https://www.sla.org.uk/read-for-refugees

STEM TRIP

Miss Oyler took a team of S2 pupils to a Royal Academy of Engineers STEM competition at All Saints High School in Glasgow. They completed against other schools in various Mars themed challenges including designing and building a transmitter tower, and making a prototype space rock collector, as well as learning about engineering careers. They brought home two trophies for the best space rock collector and for the best budgeting! Well done!

 S1 GEOGRAPHY TRIP

The Social Subjects faculty enjoyed a Geography trip on the Fife Coastal Path walking from Crail to Anstruther. For the most part we had glorious sunshine and only a short light shower on the walk. Pupils felt challenged on the walk but it was worth it in the end for a visit to the Anstruther Fish Bar. Everyone was a credit to themselves and the school.

AUTHORS IN SCHOOL

We were delighted to welcome authors John Fardell and Matt Oldfield to school.  John, who is an author and illustrator, ran an interactive session with two S2 classes on the creativity of using pictures and words to create an engaging and dynamic story. Matt, author of many books about famous footballers, used the session with S1 pupils to talk about using a passion for the subject when writing.  We would like to extend our thanks to both John and Matt.

“Very interactive and fun” (Daniel, S2)

“Really entertaining to hear about how he (Matt) started writing.” (Mia, S1)

ART DEPARTMENT

There are a number of S2 pupils working on a mosaic over the next couple of Wednesdays with a Scottish artist Alan Potter as a special project sponsored by Brodies LLP and gifted as a prize – Brodies Inspirational Art and Design Department Prize 2021, RSA Schools Art Competition. The pupils are creating a mosaic inspired by the Covid pandemic which will help to memorialise the efforts and sacrifices made by everyone in the community. See @GHSArtdept on Twitter for pictures of the mosaic in progress from the 1st December. The completed mosaic will be displayed on the outside of the school next term.

SCOTTISH INTERFAITH COMPETITION

One of the schools entries to the Scottish Interfaith Competition has won a prize! The competition was about making a religious festival more eco-friendly and three boys from 1TH – Alex Mandache, Ethan Dunn and Luke Cooper – made a PowerPoint on the Day of the Dead festival and had loads of ideas about how it could be made more eco-friendly including food, costumes and transport. Well done to the boys and to Mr Galloway and Mr Muir for supporting and guiding them!

S6 Geographers have participated in a wide range of fieldwork experiences over the last few weeks as part of their Advanced Higher course. They have investigated river, beach and soil environments and microclimates to develop their knowledge of Physical Geography fieldwork techniques. They have also completed rural and urban land use mapping; traffic surveys; pedestrian counts and environmental quality surveys to enhance their experience of using Human Geography fieldwork techniques. This knowledge will be further developed as part of their folio and used in exams.

DUKE OF EDINBURGH

In June, several pupils from our school DofE group successfully completed their Duke of Edinburgh Awards.  Each participant completed an individual programme of activities and showed fantastic resilience despite lockdown and government restrictions to achieve their Awards.

Throughout the year, the group helped various people in their local community who were shielding from Covid and improved the local environment as part of their Volunteering section. They improved their cooking; DIY; navigation skills and researched their family tree as part of their Skills section and enhanced their fitness through gym work; football; basketball; archery; cycling and walking.  During Expeditions, they explored the local area, learning about local history including the Antonine Wall; Roman Forts; Forth and Clyde canal; Twechar’s Coachie bear and the beautiful scenery in the Kilsyth hills.

Congratulations to:

DEVEOPING THE YOUNG WORKFORCE CONFERENCE

Wednesday 29th January 2020

Greenfaulds High has held a S2 careers day annually since the late 1980s. The recent Developing the Young Workforce Day for S2 was held on Wednesday 29th January. The purpose of the day is to get S2 students to think about their career options and with nearly 30 guests there was plenty of opportunities to learn about the world of work in 2020. For example, Geospatial Consultant at Atkins, Manager for Dior in Scotland and the Merchant Navy. And the more well-known careers in S2, such as, engineering, construction, the police, nursing, social work and teaching. Throughout the day the students had plenty of questions for their guests and DYW Day has certainly made a big impact on them! The day was a massive success because of the support we have, as a school, from many employers and former students.
