A Sense of Place: The Roman Presence in Cumbernauld

Greenfaulds High School Art and Design Department

2017 is the year of History, Heritage and Archaeology and the Art and Design Department at GHS have been successful with a heritage lottery fund bid for Stories, Stones and Bones sharing heritage funding. The amount of the bid is £10,000.

The Art & Design project is called ‘A Sense of Place: The Roman Presence in Cumbernauld’ and the key local heritage sites are Bar Hill Roman Fort and the Antonine Wall. The Art & Design department are looking forward to taking pupils on trips to see the Roman fort and Antonine Wall, as well as Roman artefacts in collections at the Hunterian Museum and the National Museum of Scotland. A main part of the project will involve S1-S3 pupils creating a series of large mosaics with the Scottish artist Alan Potter (for display at GHS). Pupils will also be working with Scottish artist Kate Leiper to create illustrations for an illustrated brochure about the heritage sites and the Roman presence in Cumbernauld. The grant will also provide materials for Roman-themed printmaking, illustration and pottery activities for hundreds of S1-S6 pupils at GHS, and staff and pupils at GHS are also looking forward to creating some artworks with pupils at Redburn School. Everyone is excited about showcasing the project at the local Cumbernauld Museum and in special exhibitions at GHS throughout the next year, engaging the local community with their heritage.

See the GHS pupils create a range of mosaics in the video below.

First Year 30 Days Wild Challenge

Greenfaulds Geography Presents: #30dayswild
Greenfaulds High School is taking part the Wildlife Trusts 30 Days Wild – the UK’s first ever month long nature challenge. The idea behind this challenge is to do something wild in the outdoors each day for the month of June. You can climb a hill, take a photo or plant a wild garden.
As our school breaks up near the end of the month the competition in GHS will run from May 25th to June 23rd. Pupils will be issued with a checklist of 39 tasks and the aim is to complete 30 of these with a photo as evidence before the deadline. If no pupil has completed all tasks by Friday June 23rd, then the pupil with the
most challenges completed will be announced as the winner on Monday June26th.
Pupils should document their adventures with a photo as evidence. Once you have completed 10 tasks visit F044 to have your tasks recorded and then get back outside to complete the rest! Prizes will be awarded to the S1 pupils who come in first, second and third place, now go and #getoutside #30dayswild @GeogGreenfaulds

*** S3 Parents’ Evening ***

Just a short note to all parents and carers of S3 pupils. Parents’ Evening takes place on Tuesday the 14th of March from 4.15pm to 6.45pm. We would ask parents not to arrive at the school before 4.00pm due to the volume of traffic as parents and school buses pick up pupils.

Appointment sheets have been issued and we would encourage pupils to spread appointments out so parents have sufficient time to get to each appointment.

Course choice sheets have also been issued to pupils and these must be returned to the office no later that Monday the 20th of March with a note of the 2 subjects being dropped and the required signatures from parents.

*** Collecting Pupils ***

As you are aware the entrance to the new Greenfaulds High School is situated off the A73. We appreciate that pedestrian access to the school is limited but hope this will dramatically improve with the completion of the second phase scheduled for August.

Whilst it is convenient for some parents to pick up and drop off pupils in the vicinity of Scott Drive there has been a number of safety concerns raised due to the high volume of pupils and traffic in this area.

We would encourage and appreciate if parents could use the A73 access as the segregated bus bays and drop off points provide a safe and controlled environment particularly at the start and end of the day.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Careers Conference Wed 22nd February

Career Conference Wednesday 22nd February 6.00-9.00.

Drop In Event for all Year Groups & Parents

Dear Parent/Guardian

We are once again holding our extremely successful biennial Careers Conference this year. Present will be over 40 representatives from Employers, Apprenticeship providers, Training Agencies, Colleges, Universities as well as representatives from Skills Development Scotland, the Armed Forces and SAAS

This is a “drop in” event with no formal structure, for pupils and parents. It allows you to find out what opportunities there are after leaving school along with possible entry requirements. It will also allow you to compare one career pathway against another. This type of information proves very valuable when it comes to making Course Choices, which is something that you and your child will do before there will be another Careers Conference held within the school.

You are warmly invited to attend what parents and pupils have told us on previous occasions to be a very interesting and valuable evening.

Cumbernauld Mosque Open Day

Invitation to Cumbernauld Mosque Open Day

On behalf of the congregation and trustees of Cumbernauld Mosque I would like to invite you to an Open Mosque Day, to be held on Sunday February 5th. This Connecting Communities event will take place on the Muslim Council of Britain national Visit My Mosque Day 2017.

In the spirit of friendship and conversation we hope to give members of the local community an engaging insight into the life of the mosque and to promote greater understanding of Islam. We anticipate welcoming local people from all walks of life to visit the mosque and meet with its diverse Muslim congregation.

The Islamic Education Trust Cumbernauld has a daily congregation of people and on Friday prayers it attracts more than 100 worshippers. Its unusual play on modern and classical architecture draws visitors from schools and the public throughout the year. The open attitude of the mosque and its people make a major contribution in fostering interfaith and intercultural understanding in the local community.

We would be honoured to have your presence on the day between 12 noon – 5pm. In particular, if you are able to arrive by 1pm we would like to invite you to observe the midday prayer followed by light refreshments and a tour of the building.

Please contact me by telephone or email to confirm your attendance or for further information.

Yours sincerely,

Muhammad Ashraf
