The Highland Games

This week all of the primary 1 children took part in the highland games. First we worked in the gym hall to compete in the shot put, the caber toss, the wellie toss and the farmer’s dash.  We worked in teams which we called clans.  There was clan Anderson, Bruce, Campbell and Douglas.  We made shields to show which clan we were part of.

After taking part in all of our events we went back to class for an athlete’s feast. We got to try Scottish cheddar and oatcakes, carrot cabers, shortbread and even had a little taste of Irn Bru.  Before we started eating and drinking we had a toast with our drinks and we all said cheers.

We think that we worked well in our teams by encouraging each other.  Our highland games was great, awesome and cool.

Shark in the Park on a Windy Day

This week we are working on our first book from our P1 book bag. It is called ‘Shark in the Park on a Windy Day’. We decided to make our own telescopes just like Tim and on Tuesday we walked to our local park to see what we could see with our telescopes. Thankfully there were no sharks in our park but we did see lots of different things.

We will be doing lots of different things with our story this week.  So far it is great fun.

Shape

We have been exploring 3D shapes in class. We know that 2D shapes are flat and 3D shapes are solid. We investigated shapes through our play in a range of ways. We sorted them using the shape names, we tested to find out which ones could roll, we used them to print with paint, we created our own toy catalogue by making models of toys and we created some of our own shapes using playdoh and the polygons.

Fireworks Art

We have been making fireworks pictures.  We used printing to make the fireworks shapes.  To make them look really colourful we tried to use 2 colours for each one.  We also used our cutting and sticking skills to make rooftops for our artwork.  We think they look beautiful in our classroom.  They are just like some of the fireworks that we got to see on bonfire night.

Happy Halloween

We have been enjoying Halloween in Primary 1. We used our reading skills to make Halloween pictures. It was quite tricky drawing some of the pictures and we had to make sure we drew the correct amount. We were also reading lots of Halloween stories in the library.

we were painting spiders on webs by matching each number. We found this task difficult. We had to remember to count carefully as we made each spider. This was a strange activity because we used cotton buds to paint with. We used our counting skills to count out sweets for the guisers. Some of them got far too much. We had to count to very high numbers this afternoon.

we enjoyed making Halloween spiders. They look amazing outside our classroom.

Myself and My Family Topic

We have now finished learning about ourselves and our families. We found out who lives in each others houses. We learned what colour our eyes and hair were.  We know we are all unique.  That means we are all different.

We have enjoyed pretending to be families in our imaginative area. We enjoyed using the construction materials to build dream houses for our families.  We liked using the mirrors to help us to draw our faces.  We enjoyed pretending to be adults reading bedtime stories in the library.

We enjoyed making frames for our family portraits but we would have liked more time because some of us didn’t get them finished.
