Subtraction

This week we have started to think about Subtraction.  We learned that addition and subtraction are like brothers and sisters who always want to do the opposite thing.  We learned that you can use lots of words and phrases when you are working on subtraction like ‘minus’, ‘take away’, ‘subtract’ or ‘find the difference’.  We found out that when we subtract the number of objects that we started with gets smaller and we end up with less.

We worked in groups to start to think about subtractions. We enjoyed playing a jumping buses game where we rolled the dice and jumped our bus backwards along the number line.

The magician had to make some of the magic jewels disappear and we had to guess how many we missing.

In the dragon game the dragon had to hide some gems and the other children had to find out how many were missing.

For the memory game there were 10 different objects and we had to see if we could remember the ones that were missing.

The last activity was the dinosaur land.  We had to pretend that some of the dinosaurs were extinct and take them away.  The others had to guess how many were gone and find out how many were left over.

Now we will be learning how to do subtraction sums.

  1. Jared is really enjoying this at school and is asking me to give him more sums to do even on the way to school.

  2. Super subtraction work P1! I can see from your photos you can even use a numberline to subtract. Great work!
