No Braver Deed

Pupils in four North Lanarkshire Schools (including Calderhead High School) have been working on a documentary on Willie Angus.

S4 pupil, Brianna, was recently interviewed by Stephen Jardine on BBC Radio Scotland about the project and you can hear this interview by clicking here. (1:49)

William (Willie) Angus was awarded the Victoria Cross in August 1915 for rescuing a wounded comrade following an assault on enemy lines. This was an extremely dangerous mission during which Willie received forty wounds, including the loss of sight in one eye as well as injuries to his legs, arms, head and shoulders. His commanding officer stated that there had been no braver deed in the history of the British Army and commended him for a Victoria Cross.

Poppy Scotland Letters Home

poppy competitionS3  History pupils participated in the Poppy Scotland ‘ Letters Home’ competition last term. This competition commemorated the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme. Pupils were asked to write a letter home as though they were soldiers fighting at the front and were encouraged to think about sharing their experiences, emotions and describing the environment they were in, as well as the impact of their words on the letter’s recipient.

The class recently received certificates marking their participation. Well done everyone.

Holocaust Memorial Day

HMD LogoHolocaust Memorial Day (HMD) is marked each year on 27 January and we remember the six million Jewish people systematically persecuted and murdered during the Holocaust and those who have faced persecution and death since then.

The theme this year was How Can Life Go On?  This theme asks us all think about how people who have experienced the horror of genocide can start to rebuild their lives.

Calderhead High School marked HMD this week with assemblies for all pupils led by S6 pupils, Jamie Shaw and Chloe Jarvis. James and Chloe visited Auschwitz in September 2016.

S4 History Students are “Digging In”

S4 National 5 History students attended the “Digging In” Project  on Tuesday, 6th of December.

The Digging In Project has replicated trenches from the Great War by recreating a section of Allied and opposing German trenches in Pollok Park, Glasgow.

The reconstructions draw on a variety of sources, including archaeological excavations carried out in France and Belgium by the University of Glasgow. In the reconstructed trenches, pupils were able to gain an insight into what life was like for soldiers in WW1 – not just the violence of war but also the mundane challenges of daily life in the trenches.

Letters HomeGood luck to Mr Reilly’s S3 history pupils who have entered Poppy Scotland’s ‘Letters Home’ competition. This competition commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme and pupils were asked to write a letter home as though they were soldiers fighting at the front. History Success

Well done to History teacher, Mr Reilly, who has been selected to take part in a professional development tour of Berlin in October. The tour has been organised by the German Embassy in London, together with the Federal Foreign Office, for British teachers of History and applications were invited from all parts of the UK.

This year’s trip will focus on:

  • History of Europe past and present
  • World War I centenary, including its implication for today and commemorating the events in Germany and the UK; and
  • Germany as a migration country

Gut gemacht!
