Lessons from Auschwitz

On 7th November, S6 pupils Jamie Reid and Brianna Shaw travelled with pupils from all over Scotland to visit Auschwitz in Poland. This is part of their work with the Holocaust Memorial Trust and the Lessons from Auschwitz Project. The pupils were offered a unique opportunity to be involved in a four-part course offered by the Holocaust Educational Trust, which consists of two seminars, a one day visit to Poland and a Next Steps project through which students pass on the lessons they have learned to the wider learning community. The Project is a journey of learning and exploration about the history of the Holocaust and about the world we live in. Brianna and Jamie described the whole project as a moving and thought-provoking experience. We are looking forward to hearing Brianna and Jamie share their experience with our learning community at Calderhead High School.

Holocaust Memorial Day

Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) takes place on 27 January every year  to remember the six million Jews murdered in the Holocaust, and the millions of people killed in Nazi Persecution and in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, and Darfur. 27 January marks the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp.

The theme of HMD this year is ‘The Power of Words’ and all year groups attended moving assemblies presented by history teacher, Mr Reilly, which included his personal experiences of visiting Auschwitz.

There is also an HMD display in the Library with many fiction and non-fiction available to borrow.

Holocaust Memorial Day

HMD LogoHolocaust Memorial Day (HMD) is marked each year on 27 January and we remember the six million Jewish people systematically persecuted and murdered during the Holocaust and those who have faced persecution and death since then.

The theme this year was How Can Life Go On?  This theme asks us all think about how people who have experienced the horror of genocide can start to rebuild their lives.

Calderhead High School marked HMD this week with assemblies for all pupils led by S6 pupils, Jamie Shaw and Chloe Jarvis. James and Chloe visited Auschwitz in September 2016.
