Rights Respecting Schools

We have been awarded the Gold: Rights Aware accreditation for being a Rights Respecting School. This means that we have worked  hard to fully embed the UNICEF Children’s Rights in our school. This is a big achievement for schools and we now need to work hard to sustain this.

At Bargeddie Primary School, we wish to engage children in taking an active role in how school promotes social and emotional well-being. The rights respecting school award is a way of children recognising their contributions are valued and that their views can create a change, making it a better place, through a structured journey in achieving bronze, silver and gold awards. Not only does it improve school life, but also reaches out to the local community and around the world. The children at Bargeddie Primary know they are an important part of making the world a better place, starting with their immediate environment. The Rights of the child, known as Articles, are:

What is the UNCRC?

In 1989 UNICEF established a set of 54 Articles known as the Convention for the Rights of the Child. The convention applies to every child under the age of 18, without discrimination, whatever their ethnicity, gender, religion, language, abilities, whatever they think or say, whatever their family background. Almost every country in the world has signed this convention to uphold the Articles within their country and do all it can to protect children’s rights. The convention underpins everything UNICEF does around the world.

The convention recognises that all children and young people have the right to be treated with dignity and fairness, to be protected, to develop to their full potential and to participate. Every adult is a duty bearer and it is their responsibility to ensure children’s rights are protected.

This video from the Scottish Government,  follows four children on their ‘Children’s Rights journey’ through their community, interacting with people  from various public authorities to learn about the practical ways that public authorities can respect children’s rights.  Please click on the link which will take you to the video – Children’s Rights and the UNCRC in Scotland: An exploration of rights in our communities (youtube.com).

In December 2023, the Scottish Government passed unanimously passed the UNCRC Bill. The Scottish Government is committed to protecting the rights of children and young people and
remains committed to the incorporation of the UNCRC to the maximum extent possible. The following video explains more – UNCRC Overview Public – YouTube.

What is the Rights Respecting School Award (RRSA)?

The RRSA focuses on children’s rights in schools and takes a whole-school approach to child rights and human rights education. A UNICEF Rights Respecting School is a community where children’s rights are learned, taught, practised, respected, protected and promoted.

By learning about their rights, our pupils also learn about the importance of respecting the rights of others i.e. their responsibilities. Pupils at Bargeddie are encouraged to reflect on how their behaviour and actions affect those around them which allows us to build and maintain a positive and safe learning environment for all.

Playground Charter

Our Playground Charter is a set of guidelines that learners and all staff have agreed to follow. It is a way to display our values and set behaviour expectations.

Article of the Fortnight

We will be learning about the following article over the next two weeks –

Aims of Education – “Children’s education should help them fully develop their personalities, talents and abilities. It should teach them to understand their own rights, and to respect other people’s rights, cultures and differences. It should help them to live
peacefully and protect the environment.” United Nations Convention on the Rights of a Child.
