This week, Primary 4 Science Club had great fun making our own ice cream! We added salt to ice, lowering the freezing point of the ice and creating temperatures so low that we were able to freeze our ice cream mixture! We all had a great time making our ice cream and an even better time eating it! Yum!

Bugmalloch Primary!
Primary 4 had a fantastic day at Jupiter Outdoor Centre! We went on a minibeast hunt where we found some familiar creatures as well as one or two we had never seen before. After a quick stop for some lunch, we went on a scavenger hunt and even got to do some pond dipping. We had a great time thanks to our lovely guide Catherine. Well done Primary 4!
Roman Bakery
Primary 4 have been making bucellatum, a very dry biscuit often eaten by Roman soldiers. Although not particularly tasty, these long-lasting biscuits would have helped a Roman soldier survive on long marches or voyages. Primary 4 really enjoyed making bucellatum – even if eating them wasn’t quite as much fun!
Think Science!
Primary 4 had a surprise visitor on Christmas Jumper Day. Jon Davies from Think Science came to school to help us explore our senses. We used our sense of smell to identify things that we couldn’t see and learned that our eyes are quite easy to fool by making our own thaumatropes. We found out what happens to our sense of taste when we have no sense of smell and explored how sounds travel through the air. To finish off, Jon blew us some special bubbles that we could hold in our hands without them popping; I think one or two of our boys and girls are hoping that Santa might bring us some of these special bubbles for Christmas!
Thank you Jon for you visit! We had a fantastic time learning with you!
X-Ray Vision
Primary 4 were delighted to welcome another visitor to their class today. Mrs Stewart, a radiographer, came to talk to the class about her job at the children’s hospital where she gives people x-rays, CT scans and MRI scans. Mrs Stewart gave P4 a quiz about their bodies (we got 10/10 – result!) and told us all about the bones in our bodies. Mrs Stewart also brought along her friend, Charlie, to meet the class. Primary 4 really enjoyed meeting Charlie, even if he didn’t say very much!
Thank you so much for coming along to see us today Mrs Stewart, it was a fantastic visit and we learned a lot!
P4 Visitor
Primary 4 had a surprise visitor yesterday when Jordan, the optometrist, popped in to see them. Jordan spoke to us about all the things we can do to keep our eyes healthy, including the importance of regular eye tests. He even let us use some of the special pieces of equipment he uses when testing people’s eyes!
Thank you Jordan for your visit, we really enjoyed it and learned a lot!
Our skin
Primary 4 have been making models of the three layers of human skin; subcutaneous fat, the dermis and the epidermis.
Pupils worked together in groups to design the structure of their model and decide which materials they would use in order to make it. Once their models were completed, every pupil in the class managed to earn some gems for their group by naming all the features of the skin their model represented. Well done P4!
Taste bud testing!
Primary 4 were exploring our five basic tastes today: sweet, salty, sour, bitter and umami. We tasted examples of each and tried to mark them on a taste map of the tongue. We soon realised that this was a very difficult thing to do because our taste buds can detect different tastes all over our tongue and not just in certain places! Primary 4 really enjoyed their taste testing session, although from the pictures it’s clear that they enjoyed some tastes far more than others!
Primary 4 are superheroes!
Primary 4 gave everyone a treat with their fantastic assembly today. Our theme was ‘Superheroes’; not just the kind with super powers but our police officers, doctors, nurses, fire fighters, scientists and soldiers who work so hard every day to look after us.
Well done Primary 4! After seeing your wonderful performance the whole school knows that you really are SUPERHEROES!!!!
