Today our Eco & Outdoor learning team learned about the ‘Upstream Battle’ and detrimental effects of marine litter. We took a walk around our school grounds to try and identify how litter in our area might get into the River Clyde and came to the conclusion that it must be via drains. We are looking forward to raising more awareness about re-using, reducing and recycling!
Last week, Primary 4 conducted a traffic survey on Old Edinburgh Road as part of their learning in relation to Information Handling for Maths. The road doesn’t look that busy in these photos but there were actually lots of different colours of cars to count, even Flynn’s mum’s! We now know that when we are doing a survey we need to concentrate really well so that our results are accurate.
Yesterday it was so beautiful that we stayed outside all afternoon having fun with an orienteering activity. Lots of running around, teamwork and drawing maps for other groups to follow.
Primary 5 recently enjoyed a trip to New Lanarkshire Mosque. They were given a tour by the Imam to allow them to put their learning in a real life context. They also learned about the 5 pillars of Islam and particularly enjoyed their juice and crisps at the end! Aitkenhead Primary School is bidding to bag a massive cash boost from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative. Tesco teamed up with Groundwork to launch its community funding scheme, which sees grants of £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 raised from carrier bag sales in Tesco stores awarded to local community projects. In pairs or trios some of the pupils in P6 wrote plays to create an alternative twist in the plot of ‘Why the Whales Came’. Over a couple of weeks they wrote different acts and included stage directions. We had a practise run, trying each others activities and then thinking of adaptations that might be necessary for Primary 1 pupils to be able to succeed.
