First year pupils will be introduced to Modern Studies through two topics – World Poverty and Diversity and Discrimination.
World Poverty
In this unit pupils will look at poverty both a national and international context and will identify similarities and comparisons between different countries in relation to poverty and the impact it has on people’s lives. Pupils will look at human rights, child soldiers and child labour and look at the overall attempts countries and aid organisation to combat these issues and other problems associated with poverty.
Diversity and Discrimination
During the first topic pupils will look at personal identity and find out ‘who am I?’. Scottish and National identity allows pupils to look at characteristics that makes up these identities. Multiculturalism, immigration and prejudice are looked at closely and pupils will discover the truth about discrimination in action: racism, sexism and gender and sectarianism.
