Second year pupils will undertake a two part course aimed at developing their Historical knowledge and skills. They will develop an understanding of the concept of discrimination through the investigation of two significant examples of discrimination in the 20th century.

Free at Last – Black Civil Rights in America

This topic forms the first part of a two unit investigation into discrimination in the 20th century.
Pupils will investigate the notion of discrimination in the USA. They will be able to describe how Black Americans fought for their Civil Rights through the use of non-violent methods. Pupils will be able to assess and explain the importance of Martin Luther King as a leader of the Civil Rights movements. Pupils will also gain an understanding of the different laws that were passed and how they improved the lives of the Black Americans.

The Holocaust

This topic forms the second part of a two unit investigation into discrimination in the 20th century.
Pupils will investigate the treatment of Jews at the hands of the Nazi regime. They will be able to describe how the Nazis kept control in Germany and how they used this power to discriminate against European Jews and put into place their “ Final Solution”.
