Classical Studies (Life in Ancient Greece & Rome)
What is it?
In Classical Studies you will study everyday life and culture in two of the most important ancient civilisations the world has known – Ancient Greece and Rome. You will study topics such as religion in ancient Athens and Pompeii – the gods and the myths. You will also investigate aspects of everyday home life, work and leisure in ancient Athens and Pompeii. What was it like to be a citizen of Athens and why did Pompeii lie hidden for 1,700 years untouched before it was rediscovered? You will also study themes, both ancient and modern, contained in one of the greatest stories ever told, Homer’s Odyssey.
What do you do in this subject during S3 and S4?
Throughout S3 and S4, pupils will study Life in Classical Athens (Life in Classical Greece), Everyday Life in Ancient Pompeii (Life in Ancient Rome) and the wonderful monster-filled tale of Homer’s Odyssey (Classical Literature).
Is it for you?
The study of Classics will take you on a journey of discovery into the depths of everyday life in the ancient world.
Through active learning and educational excursions, the study of Classics will allow you to gain a knowledge and understanding of the classical Greek and Roman civilisations by comparing and contrasting these societies with the modern world.
