Summer Term Fun

We have had a very busy start to the new term with First Holy Communion, our P6/7 visit to Aviemore, H Factor Awards, P2/1 and P5 assembly.  Every event has been a real  success and all the children involved have benefited greatly from their experiences.  Thanks to all the children and staff who have worked so hard.  It was particularly pleasing to receive so many compliments about our children during our visit to the Cairngorms.  The children’s good manners, excellent behaviour and positive attitude were noticed and commented upon by many.  Well done!

We have many exciting things to look forward to between now and the end of term.  We have at last got our vegetable plot ready to be planted.  It is situated in Fr. Stephen’s garden to allow for easy access and maintenance during the holiday period.  Fr Stephen will give the garden a special blessing on Tuesday 3rd June at 2pm, parents will be welcome to join us.  Mrs Moran has already been planting lettuce with P4 and we will be planting many more vegetables this week.  It is a very exciting project which we hope will have lasting benefits for all.  The vegetables will be used for cooking in school and any surplus will be sold to families and friends with any profit going towards the Malawi Partnership Project.  The partnership is continuing to grow with regular correspondence between the two schools and parishes.  We are really looking forward to the visit of Fr. Alfred at the beginning of the new term and Mrs McIntyre and I are well ahead in our plans for our visit in September.  We have even undertaken a painting and building skills course!  Please remember to do your best to contribute to our Back Pack Appeal.  The backpacks will go directly to our partner school in the container which will be sent off in August.  Please send any contributions into school. St Bernadette’s Parish Children’s Liturgy group are hosting a Family Fun Day on Sunday 22nd June which coincides with the collection date for the backbacks. It should be a really good event for children. On Sunday 22nd June the Parish are also doing the collection of bicycles between 12.00 & 2.00pm if any parents have bicycles to donate. Please note that bicycles must be roadworthy.

On Wednesday P7 participate in the Yellow Walk for St Andrew’s Hospice.  We urgently require one or two parent helpers to allow the visit to take place.  Please contact the school if you can help.  It is always a really well organised and fun event for the children.

On Saturday a team of P6 & P7 pupils will take part in the Shotts Highland Games.  I am confident we will do very well! Last year we were 2nd overall so we have a lot to live up to!

A group of P6 pupils will take part in the Fire Reach programme on Tuesday 10th June at Coatbridge Fire Station.  The children will no doubt have a great experience being fire fighters for the day.

P1-6 will go on their outing to Blair Drummond Safari Park on Wednesday 11th June.  The forecast is looking good for just now so hopefully we will have a fine day.  Please send in the money if you have not already paid.  The buses will not return until 4pm.

P7 pupils go on their 2 day visit to OLHS on 10th and 11th June.  During the visit they will meet their new class and teachers and follow a typical timetable.  Lunch will be provided, although all pupils must have their Young Scot Card.  On Monday 9th June there will be a welcome Mass in OLHS for parents and pupils at 7pm.  It is expected that everyone attends.

Mrs Bradley will begin our Commonwealth Games mural this week with children from across the school.  The design is fabulous and I’m really looking forward to seeing the end result which will be lasting memory of all the work we have been doing this year to celebrate the Commonwealth Games 2014.  Hopefully the weather will stay dry for us.

Our Sports Day takes place on the 19th June.  It will have a Commonwealth Games theme including an opening ceremony.  The day will start at 10am.  All parents are invited to come along.  We also require a number of parent helpers, please contact the school if you can help.

On 23rd June all pupils from P5-P7 will go to Ravenscraig Sports Arena for the Queen’s Baton Relay.  The children will see the baton and participate in a number of events.  It promises to be a very memorable day.

The PTA end of term disco also takes place on Monday 23rd June.  It would be great if everyone could come.

On Tuesday 24th June P7 will go on their outing to M&Ds.  If anyone can accompany the children please contact Mrs Smith.

P7 will be presented with awards and new High School ties at a Mass and ceremony on Thursday 26th June at 1pm.  This will be a lovely occasion to celebrate the contribution the children have made to St Bernadette’s Primary over the past 7 years.  Parents and families of our P7 children are invited to attend this very special event.

Our term will end on Friday 27th June at 1pm for hopefully a great and well deserved holiday for all.
