Internet or World Wide Web

So do you know the difference between the Internet and the WWW? BT think that the terms are interchangeable, however, this is NOT the case.

The Internet is a interconnected network of networks. It is the physical network that all internet traffic must pass along.

The World Wide Web is a service that runs on the Internet. It is a series of documents hosted on Internet connected web servers that allow for browsing using hyper links.

The two terms are not interchangeable in the exam and you will drop marks by using the wrong term.

Higher – Trace Tables

A trace table is used by a programmer to help simulate the running of a program. The programmer dry runs the program, as they trace each line of code with their finger they record the values in a table that includes the line number of the program.

This is similar to TRACS but it requires the programmer to remember a lot more.

Fetch Execute Cycle

While a program is running the CPU needs to retrieve data from memory (fetch). This data is then decoded. That is, checked to see if it is a value or an instruction, it is then executed.

Higher – GCHQ’s Christmas Card and RLE

So I was reading the BBC news website which has an article on GCHQ’s Christmas card.

This led me to wonder what is was as I hadn’t seen one before, it turns out it is a nonogram or picross. Then it suddenly hit me, this is a form of run length encoding, that we will be covering later in the course. It’s just that in this case the encoding is only for black squares. Anyway I just wanted to share it now while it was topical.
