- Embedded files are supplied along with the multimedia application, making the application quite large in terms of storage requirements.
- Streamed files are kept on a remote server and only transferred to the client when required.
- Multimedia files can be displayed and distributed in a number of ways.
- Via a server, eg web pages
- in a stand alone program that can be sent via DVD or Internet download
- Using a software player or being embedded into another multimedia file.
- In order to view or access multimedia data requirements may have to be met
- Extra software may require to be installed, such as CODECs, stand alone players (Flash, Shockwave) or web browser plug ins (VRML)
- There might be a minimum hardware and software requirement. A new OS may be required or extra RAM
- A client such as a web browser may require to be installed.
