There’s a lot of competition for college courses, but My World of Work can help. You can find out how and when to apply, then follow the tips to make your application stand out from the crowd. Here are some pointers to get you started:

Leaving school? So what’s next?
It may feel like a tough decision, but there are lots of options available to you:
- get started by creating a My World of Work account. Then you can find out where your strengths lie and discover your skills and interests to help you find a career that suits you
- thinking about going onto to college, university or further training? Use the course search tool to consider your options and find out what funding might be available
- Apprenticeships – Earn as you learn with an Apprenticeship in Scotland. Find out what types are available and search for vacancies
- work experience such as volunteering can be valuable when building skills for your career. Find opportunities near you
- a gap year is your chance to travel, work, volunteer or study
- looking for a job? Discover Scotland’s industries, search for jobs, learn how to network and visit job fairs
- if you think you need a little help getting into the workplace, check out the Certificate of Work Readiness and get the skills and experience employers really want.
Parents and carers
When it comes to making career decisions, you’re one of the first people your child will turn to for help.
Skills Development Scotland is Scotland’s careers service and our Careers Advisers are available to support you and your child throughout their time at school.
You can get in touch with your Careers Adviser through the school.
Scotland’s careers website My World of Work is also packed with information to help you explore the routes your child could take for their career.
Pupils will use My World of Work with their SDS Careers Adviser at school as they build their Career Management Skills

Exam results – what next?
Whether you are waiting for your exam results to arrive or you already have them, Scotland’s careers service Skills Development Scotland is there to help you
My World of Work is packed with information to help you with your next steps.
There’s also loads of advice for parents and carers, including practical steps to support your child in the run up to results day and in the days after.
SDS’ Exam Results Helpline opens on results day on 0808 100 8000. Qualified SDS Careers Advisers will be there to discuss what’s right for you.
You can get information on UCAS Clearing, resits and appeals. You can also talk to us about other options, such as doing an Apprenticeship.
