On Friday, four S1 pupils took part in the final of the Scottish Food and Drinks Federation’s “One Pot Dish” competition. The final was held in Coatbridge College with teams from all over Scotland competing. Cardinal Newman was represented by Abigail Small (who originally came up with the idea), Liam Robertson, Patrick Hewitt and Antonia Battersby. The team presented their “Strawberry Frost” product to the judges who really liked their idea. Congratulations to Clyde Valley whose product came first. Mr Sloan and the pupils had a wonderful day and left with doggy bags full of freebies as a reward for getting to the final. All four pupils did themselves and the school proud, they were confident, articulate and truly effective contributors throughout the day. Well done.

Enjoy fireworks safely this Guy Fawkes Night
Four free displays for North Lanarkshire

We’re holding four free fireworks displays in Airdrie, Coatbridge, Cumbernauld and Motherwell – so celebrate Guy Fawkes and keep the family safe.
On Friday 4 November come along to:
- Airdrie Leisure Centre. A bonfire will be lit at 7.00pm in Rawyards Park and the fireworks display begins at 7.30pm. Parking is available at Motherwell Street and Waverley Drive and you are advised to arrive early to secure a space.
- Dunbeth Park, Coatbridge. A bonfire will be lit at 7.00pm, the fireworks begin at 7.30pm. Please note, there is no parking within the Park.
- St Maurice’s High School, Cumbernauld. The fireworks display will start at 7.30pm. Car parking is available at Broadwood Stadium and a limited amount of parking at St Maurice’s High School.
On Saturday 5 November the fun moves to Strathclyde Country Park Motherwell for an event jointly organised by North and South Lanarkshire Councils.
A funfair run by M&Ds will be open from 4.30pm to 8.30pm and there will be live music and entertainment from Clyde 1 from 6.00pm.
The bonfire is lit at 6.45pm and fireworks begin at 7.30pm. Enjoy 30 minutes of a spectacular light show as fireworks reflect over the water of Strathclyde Loch.
Please allow plenty of time to travel to the event, as there are significant roadworks in the area, particularly at the Raith Interchange.
There are two entrances to Strathclyde Park:
- North entrance at the Raith Interchange, for traffic arriving via the A725 from Bellshill and Coatbridge or southbound on the M74, leaving at Junction 5;
- South entrance at the junction of Airbles Road and Hamilton Road for traffic from Motherwell and Wishaw or northbound on the M74, leaving at Junction 6.
Parking is available at Hamilton Palace Grounds retail park but pedestrians entering the park via the underpass and footbridge from there must be in by 7.15pm. After that time, the footway will only be used to exit the park, to minimise congestion.
Please note, traffic will experience a delay of around 30 minutes before exiting the park after the fireworks display to allow pedestrians to leave safely – please be patient.
Waiting and loading restrictions will be in place on the streets around Strathclyde Park during the day and evening of 5 November.
To help you get maximum and safe enjoyment at each display, can we remind you:
- Each display lasts about 30 minutes. Hot food and refreshments will be on sale.
- An adult must accompany children under 12.
- In the interest of safety, no sparklers or fireworks are allowed.
- Please wear suitable clothing and footwear for this outdoor event.
