Digital Learning Week

Extract from North Ayrshire’s Glow Development Officer’s blog …

And That Was Digital Learning Week
Huge thanks to all schools who took part in Digital Learning Week. Brisbane, Dalry, Blacklands, Pennyburn, Whitehirst Park and Stanley made a fabulous job of the primary digital story while Garnock and Largs academies flew the flag for the secondaries.
To Brisbane, Abbey and Hayocks primaries – thank you for allowing me to share in your pupils’ learning. Garnock Academy also invited me to be part of their week and I had a lovely morning at Haysholm School with Diane McHarg’s Arran class who shared their learning with iPads.
Hopefully next year more schools will become involved, so here’s to Digital Learning Week 2017!

Thanks to Rosslyn Lee for showcasing Arran class via the North Ayrshire Video channel.

Happy Retirement

The Seniors invited Jennifer Campbell and Diane Reekie to school or ‘tea and cake’  last week to say Goodbye and Good luck on their retirement.  Jennifer has worked in the school for many years as our Speech and language therapist and Diane as our home school inclusion worker.  We presented both ladies with cards and flowers from all of us.

Blog Training for Parents

5 of our children and young people are trialling their own blog as a way of capturing evidence of achievements.  Rosslyn Lee, GLOW development officer  from North Ayrshire Council came out to train their parents on how to upload evidence of wider achievements from home.  We are at the very early stages of trialling this as an effective way of gathering assessment evidence so we will keep you updated as to whether we are going to roll this out across the whole school.  Meantime every child in school has a learning journey file containing evidence of achievement in targets, interdisciplinary and personal achievements.

Our Super Sensory Science Fair

Today at Haysholm the children and young people enjoyed taking part in a Sensory Science Fair.  Mrs Mair organised this in partnership with Science teachers from our cluster school Irvine Royal.  In the morning activities in the Science Marketplace included; Making slime, magnets, making lava lamps, tuning forks and making sounds with beakers, fire extinguisher experiment, static electricity, bath bombs, balloon rockets and giant bubbles.  Mrs Brisbane also organised a super science sensory story in the pink room called ‘Why?’

In the afternoon classes did a Science Carousel where pupils had an opportunity to rotate around classrooms and explore a variety of experiments devised by the teachers.  Everybody has had a lot of fun and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Comments from our learners

 SC “I like bubbles”

PL “Irvine Royal came, special day, science, I liked buzzer”

GF “look, good”

RB “smells nice”

RT “look, the colours, nice”

CK signed “swimming and good boy”, needless to say he spent a lot of time splashing in the bubble pool and exploring the bath bombs!

Lots of our learners selected the Talking Mats thumbs up to show that they liked the Science activities.

Well Done Mrs Bennett!!!!

Well done to Mrs Bennett, the Rights Respecting School’s working party and pupil council committee for their hard work towards achieving the Rights Respecting School Level 1 commitment award.  See email below.

Thank you for your email, and for all of your paperwork!  It looks like you have all been very busy!

I am delighted to award the school with their Recognition of Commitment Award – well done!  I will arrange for the award certificate (and new ROC logo for you to use!) to be posted out to you.

Moving forward – it may be easier to download the paperwork and use it electronically rather than scanning in – is easier for me to read but much easier for you to keep track/add/delete etc!

Please feel free to contact me anytime and ask questions – I am here to help!

Kind regards – and congratulations once again!

Gerry

Hazel and Yvonne from SENSE Scotland visited Parents’ Evening last night to distribute information about their Service.  Currently they operate out of a base in Saltcoats, however they are moving to new premises at Ardrossan library.  This will provide service users with a base should they require access and facilities including a state of the art sensory room and rebound room.
