Primary Transition Programme

We have a very strong partnership across our cluster – Port Glasgow High School, Newark Primary School, Newark Nursery School and Kilmacolm Primary School.  This insures we have a smooth transition for pupils as they move from Primary 7 to S1.  We also have pupils transferring from Kings Oak Primary School and they are fully included in all transition activities.

During Primary 6 & 7, pupils are allocated to a House (Ferguson, Glen, or Kingston,) which links them to a specific Guidance Teacher.

Ferguson House – Mrs Brown

Glen House – Mrs Greenlees

Kingston House – Mrs Fitzharris

The Guidance teacher, along with Mrs Wilson, (PT Learning Support) Mr Cummings (Home Link Worker) and Mrs Craig (DHT, Junior School) would attend any primary review meetings to get to know the pupils and their families to ensure a smooth transition. These staff would also visit Primary classes to introduce all pupils to life in PGHS.

During Primary 7, each class is given the opportunity to attend PGHS for 1 day a week (4 weeks) to follow a full day’s timetable – thereby becoming familiar with the building, staff, school procedure.  This goes along way to alleviate any nerves pupils (& parents) have about this transition period.  Throughout the course of Primary 7 – any pupil who is identified that would benefit from enhanced transition activities will be invited for additional visits, groupwork and summer Gateway.

In June, all transferring pupils will have two induction days.  This gives pupils the opportunity to meet their new class peers and to follow their actual school timetable.
