Fun at Children in Need Day

This year for Children in Need, Clydeview Academy had a pyjama day, or come as you please if you didn’t want to wear jammies, and there were many exciting events taking place. During lunchtime, pupils could go to the assembly hall to watch people have their legs waxed, or get their own legs done, and watch S6s getting their heads shaved (to varying results). They could also go outside and pay to throw sponges at a wide range of teachers

The head shaving was the flagship event by far, with multiple S6s lining up. The “whack a teacher” outside had teachers taking turns in the pillory, even Mr Gibson had a go! Here’s what a few of our brave teachers thought of the day:

“I really enjoyed Children in Need day on Friday, it was a good bit of fun all round. There was sponge the teachers – I was obviously very popular for that it was a pound to throw a sponge at me. It’s the end of the week and it’s a good relaxed environment to build the relationships with the young people you’re working with. As it was so popular, we did make quite a bit of money from it so that’s really good to see. We also went to the hall to get our legs waxed, which are still a bit stingy but it was also a really good experience, everyone enjoyed it and we raised a lot of money for a really good cause which is great to see.”

-Mr Foster (Maths)

“The activity I was involved in was the sponge throwing one, which I thought was brilliant, it was really nice to see all the staff and pupils involved together, all laughing and shouting and really getting into the spirit of things. The other activity I was involved in was the “Rude Bakes” which went down very well – so it was great to see money raised for a good cause and everybody having fun together.”

-Miss Deans (Modern Languages)

“It was very good fun, it was nice to see all the pupils in the school having fun and getting the teachers nice and wet. Some of the pupils seemed to enjoy it more than others as some of them had real venom in their throws.

-Mr McDonald (Humanities)

The head shaving event took place in the assembly hall over lunchtime, as the on-looking students cheered and laughed from the seats. Some of the S6s having their heads shaved were Noah, Lewis, Robin, Russel and William, who bravely sacrificed their hair for a worthwhile cause. They all helped us raise a lot of money for Children in Need through donations by pupils coming through the doors to see the activities.

The rude bakes event, run by the Language Leaders, combined a cupcake sale and other languages. The “rude” words were just mundane words in other languages that looked rude to English speakers. The staff were able to purchase the cupcakes from a wide selection on offer in the staffroom. Here’s what one of our Language Leaders thought of the event:

“So rude bakes raised money for Children in Need but it was just for the teachers so we sat in the staffroom and we sold them cakes with flags with rude words on them in other languages. Sponging the teachers was a lot of fun as well because we had loads of volunteers from teachers and we had a massive turnout. There was about a hundred children standing outside waiting to throw sponges at their favourite teachers so there was a lot of money raised for Children in Need as well. I think it was around £60 and altogether with sponging teachers and rude bakes it was £150 we made.”

-Linzi C, 6D

The leg waxing victims shared their dedication to Children in Need day as they sat in the chair of doom and grimaced through the leg waxing. This event took place at the same time as the head shaving and was right next to it, meaning that some dedicated volunteers did both.

The day contributed to making happy memories for everyone involved and is sure to be equally as enjoyable next year (hopefully the current S5s are preparing for baldness). It’s also important to highlight what we achieved as a school community, raising an impressive total through all of our efforts.
